Just for fun--- Predict this season's suprise player.

Derrick Mitchell is a great choice, and I agree that it would be brilliantly creative coaching to use this former WR who is now a RB at BOTH positions. I am intrigued with this kid's potential. Once again it appears Iowa may have a variety of offensive weapons, but the question remains whether the coaches are clever enough to use those weapons effectively. But based on a few comments that KF has made in the wake of the Rose Bowl, I think he may finally be getting the message that it's OK to score points and let playmakers make plays.

If I were an Iowa offensive coach, I'd be chompin' at the bit to figure out how many ways I could deploy these guys. Wadley, Scheel, Boyle, Mitchell, Kittle, Beathard...that's a pretty exciting bunch of multi-talented offensive players. Let 'em loose and look out.

Totally agree. Let your playmakers make plays. College football is really that simple. Key is having the playmakers and I think Iowa has them, especially with CJ at QB.

Not really going out on a limb because it is such a staple of Iowa's offense, but I would say Kulick at fullback. Since Iowa has a really solid and versatile corps of running backs he probably won't put up huge numbers in the run game, but I think he's athletic enough (having played WR in high school) to break off some nice runs kind of like Janovich did last year for Nebraska.

Defensively the only real candidates are Mends, one of the Nelson's, or Snyder since they will all need to step up. I could see Miles Taylor continuing to improve and becoming a key part of one of Iowa's better secondaries in recent memory.

This prediction surprises me. I wouldn't have guessed Iowa would have a FB that would actually be running the ball more than once a game (if even?)... that has me intrigued, but I'm still very skeptical that this will happen. Could he be a surprise in that he blocks as well as previous FBs? I sure hope so, and for what it's worth I would love somebody who could take the ball and run with it too, but that seems too good to be true!

I don't think Scheel would be a surprise player because he talked about too much to be a surprise. Same with Mends.

I will go with Wisnieski on offense. They need a second TE to emerge and I think he is the one that will. Although I also like the pick of Falconer "The Forgotten". He is penciled in as a starter on the two deep and yet nobody talks about him. It is all about Scheel, Parker, and Smith. He is flying under the radar but must be pretty good for them not to redshirt him and for him to be atop the depth chart.
On Defense I will pick Ekakatie. Four star recruit who has only played as a backup but it is his Senior year and that tends to give guys some extra motivation. I think he becomes a key part of the dline.

Right, and that's why I said it may happen only a few times all year. He'll for sure need to step up in terms of blocking assuming he is the fullback this year.

I do think Kulick is athletic enough though to take a 3rd and short run and turn it into a 15-20 yard run.

I'd say Mends. Can really fly. Think they use him to blitz and can stop the run. There's so similarities in his game to Anthony Hitchens.

I am going with 2 defensive players
1) I like the pick many made of Snyder
2) Ekataki- I think he puts things together this year and is thrust in more bc of the physical nature of the position

I'm going to say the backup quarterback. Tyler Weigers . Iowa was extremely fortunate not to have to use another quarterback in crucial times last year. Beathard was able to gut it out. But it's unrealistic to think that he can do that again. I think he'll have some type of injury where he's banged up enough that he can't play for a half or maybe even a game and Weigers will have to come in and save the day. The surprising many and giving Iowa what it needs to go on a big run again

My prediction would be Derrick Mitchell who will become the yardage leader.

One of the Nelsons at DE. I would like to see Matt have a very good season and become a monster his last two years. I seem to recall reading that Anthony was "unblockable" in the spring, or something like that.

Great, looks like our Offensive Tackles suck. This season is over. :)

Why do you think it's unrealistic? Since 2007, we have only had two seasons where our starting QB has missed a start due to injury. Stanzi missed the last two games of 2008, and Rudock missed one game in 2014.

Do you think CJ is more injury-prone than the other QB's we have had? Or do you think we have just been lucky for a long time? My main concern is that while our offensive line did a great job of run-blocking last year, they were average at best in pass protection. If that doesn't improve, then CJ may have to survive a number of tough hits throughout the season. Regardless, I still think its realistic to think that CJ can start every game this season. Statistically speaking, that happens more often than not.

Iowa may not end up being as good at run-blocking in '16 as they were in '15 ... but you can be sure that pass-blocking is such an emphasis that they'll be much improved in that area. Besides, each of our top 6 guys have already seen quality playing time - so there should be a bit less of a transition getting used to the speed of the game and whatnot.

Consequently, I agree with the premise that Beathard likely will not get hit nearly as often in 2016. If he does, it may end up being more on Beathard or more on the quality of the coverage. I expect that Beathard will enjoy a far more healthy '16 campaign ... and that really could make a big impact on our O.

Jaleel Johnson. I think hes extremely underrated. Not sure surprise is a good word for him because we all know he's good, but I think he makes the jump to an elite defensive tackle in the nation.

I would include Faith Ekakitie in a player who will make a jump. He played his best football against Michigan State. He played great against a good Oline.

I'd say Scheel or Falconer. Iowa needs WR's to start becoming more successful. I think most other positions are good.

And just in case CJ gets hurt,..I'd also add Wieger.
