After re watching the game I came away feeling better about the Hawks, No emotion, Not caught up in the moment, Just really watched how the game was played. First and foremost, Temple is not a bad team, They have some good athletes and are tough in the paint.
While it's easy to talk about the stagnant offense at times, Man we got some good shots and some of them looked like they were going in and simply didn't, The missed layups are always costly, and we missed several. We had several 3's that were really nice shots that simply didn't go in, But they were shot with confidence and in the flow.
Right after the game I though, Man Nova is going to kill us, I actually feel much better about the game tomorrow after re watching the Temple game. I know I am an optimist by nature and some only see the bad, But I don't think we played nearly as poorly as the consensus was on the board right after the game.

I dont think iowa played bad, we just hit to many cold streaks. One of them always seems to be in the final 5-6 minutes. It is maddening. You just sit there and say "here we go again."

And i somewhat disagree about temple being good. Decosey was great. Outside of that, not so much. If iowa plays 15 more minutes like the first 10, Iowa wins by10-14 points.

I thought the refs called a few really early touch fouls on both teams, most notably Gesell which sent him to the bench, and the rest of the game the players thought they would need to guard loosely. After that they let em' play but the Hawks still played soft defense.

I haven't watched Villanova play much this year, but it seams they like to play a really hands on belly button defense until the refs either start calling fouls or not.

When we played Villanova in Puerto Rico a few years ago, I swear White's 2 shots to the face were intentional. One was a knee kick, the other I can't recall, but I remember researching that guard to see if he had history.

Basketball has got to be the most difficult game to ref. My biggest gripe in the Temple game was stopping the game between Joks two free throws to check the clock and only adding 4 tics back on. Who asked for the review? I don't believe Temple had any timeouts left and it must have been their very experienced coach. Good move or not, it really took away Joks momentum as he missed the second. I can't blame their coach, but I do think the refs should have played on.

The stretch between 11-6min was just god awful basketball. I could not believe how many guys were gassed and walking? I mean I realize it is a up and down game but neither team was in shape and was dead. The one time Uthoff came down and launched a deep 3 and I am pretty sure not 1 of the Iowa players made it across half court.

The review during Jok's FT's was incorrect and should not of happened. They should of looked at it before he shot the 1st one. I realize the ball is "dead" but still you do not interrupt a shooter a the line. You look at it before the 1st one or after the 2nd if they want you to. Does anyone know who calls for that review? I have noticed they have an alternate official at the bench, are they ones who can call for the review? just curious.

The last seven minutes of the first half collapse was a product of Gesell getting into early foul trouble again.
Iowa needs Gesell on the floor to maximize it's offense. Uhl had a respectable game, he was more in control
with his dribble, made a three, played some defense, and had some good drives.

Iowa had great looks, especially Jok. If hes in assasin mode, Iowa wins by 20, he had great looks. He actually made tougher looks in the first half. Uhl made some good strong moves to the basket and just had some point blank misses. This wasnt a situation where Iowa was trying to make tough shots, they were missing great looks.

I suspect Jok's asthma coupled with the fact the guy runs a 5K each trip on offense to get an open look gasses his legs by the 10 minute mark in the second half. Fran needs to trust Williams or Uhl to spell Jok for longer stretches so he has gas in his tank for the last 6-7 minutes. You can tell when Jok is winded because he front rims everything and his drives are not very aggressive.

If Iowa only has three turnovers against Nova, they will have a chance. The hawks had open looks against Temple, but couldn't hit. Keep taking care of the ball and the shots will hopefully start to fall.

That's actually not that far off from the truth.

Jared Uthoff's best game is still inside him. I hope we see it before he leaves. If we do then we won't lose again.

So true. It drives me nuts, and it clearly has a negative effect on Pete. We need to get the ball in to paint much more tomorrow, whether it be Mike penetrating and kicking or God forbid a post feed.

The big game I would like to see from Uthoff is taking shots in the flow of the offense, driving and getting fouled and setting his teammates up. If Uthoff has a big scoring game, I suspect it will be because we are behind by 10 or more and he gets 25 shots. I don't know who is capable of stepping up, but we need all starters to get 8-10 and 15 + from the bench to stay close. Also think Jok needs fewer minutes so he can be more effective.

We need to be smarter about taking 3s at appropriate times. One or two score game when your shots are not falling is not the time to shoot out of your slump. And for God's sake don't try to shoot out of your slump on back to back possessions.

One thing that does give me hope is the 3, count them, 3 TO's we had vs Temple. Apparently that was 1 off the best turnover total in the history of the NCAA tourney. (!!)

Not being a Debbie downer but I certainly didn't think that was a good team we played at all. The only thing I can say is we played about as reckless and poor and still squeaked out a win which is more than msu and some others can say. Not many tos but the shot selection was awful at times.

If we don't shoot at least 50% today I see us getting run out of the building by 15 or 20

You are probably right but what do you base that on? Temple won the AAC I think at 14-4. They played a solid schedule with UNC, Butler, Utah, Wisky, Minny, UCONN (2), Cincy (2), Tulsa (2), Memphis (2) among others. For an opening round game the opponent could have been much worse.

It might be that we are just not world beaters either with 2 really good players and a cast of role players. We are another really good player or two short.

No, not true.

Ok, the usual disclaimer...I'm not a bball expert. I'm not claiming to be right, I'm just throwing out my observations.

With that said I have watched the game 3 times now. I want to start with the positive.

1) The turnovers, or lack thereof, was a very high level performance. This was against a team known for their defense in a setting or environment that induces nerves and subsequently turnovers.

2) Keeping their cool. This Iowa team is one that we all know has struggled in close games (to put it nicely). This Temple team is one that is known for performing extremely well in close games. So, with the most pressure situation all year, having given up a lead, they keep fighting and keep their cool and win the game.

3) Woody hitting the last shot at the buzzer....I mention this not from the obvious "we got the win" perspective, but the confidence and hopefully spark this could give Adam. That has the potential to be big down the stretch. I remember Steve Weight (not much of a scorer) hitting a huge shot down the stretch to the final four run.

Some negatives:

1) Shooting....I guess this could go in either category. We shot really poorly and still won. Hopefully we don't shoot that bad again today. If we do we will lose.

2) Defense.....This Temple team is one that is challenged offensively by all reports. We gave them some open outside shots and we allowed them to get to the basket to often. I think that allowing other teams to get to the basket or scoring in close is a killer. We allow that today and we lose. This to me is the biggest concern overall.....in order to win at this level the defense has to be good and I don't think our's is at this point. Worse yet I don't think it will change from Friday to Sunday.

**The silver lining....almost every time I make observations like this (which I think sounds reasonable) is that the exact opposite happens. So, my gut is that we will lose today based on what I mentioned above...which could mean-------

You needed to not mention the silver lining until after today's game...now it's completely moot, if you're superstitious at all! :)
