Just going thru a quick memory scan and can't think of a single time firing a quality coach to reach "the next level" has worked. Here are some notable programs and their outcomes of running guys off.
Iowa Tom Davis and we got Alford
ISU McCarney and got guy from Texas then Rhodes
ISU Randy Jackson fired to keep Sanderson who bolted after 3 yrs and ISU is a non wrestling factor
Nebby fired Solich then got NFL guy. Then fired Pelini and got Reilly
Just never works out when u run off a winning coach. If u have a good example let me know

ISU ran off McDermott and got Fred?

Bo Pelini wasn't a quality coach. I'd be very surprised if his career showed any significant upward mobility from this point on.

What AD wants a guy who is going to call him a C*&@ in front of the players?

Ohio State has done all right.

tOSU doesn't count. They will always come back sooner or later, just like Michigan. Their recruiting is too good. Not to mention they are able to get almost any coach they want due to $$$, prestige and easy recruiting. They're not like Nebraska or other schools at all. If Nebraska could have got an Urban Meyer or Harbaugh they would have.

Then the thread is a little meaningless. If the question is "which mid-level program fired a coach to become elite and remained in the mid-level" it's going to be really hard to answer.
