KCCI Investigates: Small Iowa town makes millions on speed camera tickets

Some of these small town departments would piss themselves at the sight of a serious wreck on their annexed stretch. They'd be screaming for the county and state to handle the mess. They're good with the money but not the trouble.

You and your “leftist” agenda…both deserve a nice dry phuque. What a phuquin’ inefficient misuse of manpower to sit a trained LEO on a deserted stretch . Drive tge speed limit Abby and no one cares who the phuque u are!

I thought you were more of a rebel than you’re revealing on this thread Joel. I guess you can take the man out of Pella but not take the Pella out of the man. I am leaving this thread disappointed.

I just think people drive way too fast...and I have no problem with “speed limits”...Hawki....I’m sorry but remember I have had a couple of (ex)wives leave me “disappointed” too...;)

So when did giving speeding tickets become, not cop work? Was that at the same time that being a leftist prosecuting attorney meant not prosecuting criminals?
When we had far, far more important issues for police to attend.

I still can't fathom how speeding cameras are legal. You have a right to face your accuser in court. The burden of proof is on the accuser. I would think you could drive through with a ski mask on and tell them to screw off but my understanding is they ticket the owner of the car.

I'm wondering how many of those tickets are on 163. I mean, they talked to the one dude with two in town, and mentioned the two cameras near the schools (one school is going away in the near future). But to give 25k tickets, a huge chunk of those have to be on 163.

So my question would be, WTF is PCPD doing worrying about 163? It goes through town purely because they annexed the area out to the highway. That one is nothing more than a money grab.
I see ankeny cops pulling people over on I35 all of the time.

Define real crimes. Do you consider speeding, owi, wreckless driving "real" crimes.
"Real crimes", in this context are those not dismissed with a simple issuance of a ticket. Those that can't be easily automated. Speeding is not one of them. It's a waste of a valuable resource.

They were removed by the towns around me a few yrs ago once they realized they were a scam by the companies that contracted them out. The cities would get a small % of the revenue compared to the company, which also required regular "maintenance, training, and upgrades". The police also had to have full time officers review each infraction, so in reality, it didn't free up as much time and $ as originally thought. And to top it off, the companies shortened yellow light times to increase "running red light" tickets, which actually caused more accidents and public safety issues. Once the municipalities realized they were swindled, they ended the contracts and just left the ugly assed empty camera fixtures up on the poles instead (which probably deters infractions just as well without the cost).

You just described the start of a police state. As an American who enjoys our freedom, I do not support this.

police state
noun
: a political unit characterized by repressive governmental control of political, economic, and social life usually by an arbitrary exercise of power by police and especially secret police in place of regular operation of administrative and judicial organs of the government according to publicly known legal procedures

I don’t get speed cameras. Am I allowed to put up a camera outside my place and then bill them for any illegal activity they may be doing. I’ll put it up on my Facebook page that I have a camera posted.
I could use some extra money. Also would it be tax free or do I need to pay taxes?

GTFO with that bullshit. There's nothing arbitrary about a speed camera ticket. You are one ignorant mofo.

Next stage is the police demanding your personal security camera access (i.e. Ring doorbells, Blink cameras, etc.).
At this point they'll still ask/subpeona. But, as we become an increasingly remotely surveilled society, they'll expand local, state and federal rights to any recorded footage of public spaces.

When we start using traffic laws and law enforcement as a means to subsidize the government; we have lost our soul as a country. They can't prove who was driving on most of these cameras, but rather just a license plate

I remember reading the book “1984” and thinking is this where we are heading?

I've already did that once. One time I agreed, the the rest I haven't.

EDIT: reason being is that they don't have to show me their probable cause information anymore. Hell no, I'm not giving that to you. I'm not an agent of the state. If so, I demand 20 dollars an hour 24 / 7 365 days per year for me to pay / operate cameras

Speed cameras cut you a big break before the start registering your speed. Cities are allowed to “annex” and again, my advice is “just drive the speed limit”.....or else bring your wallet/ checkbook.
Why in today’s world of technology would cities and towns waste LEO manpower on catching speeders when cameras are available and accurate....and work “24/7” with no coffee breaks?
If the cops don't see it, was a crime committed?
