Kehl family getting the casino moratorium...

I don't know a whole lot about the history of trying to get a casino in CR, but it seems weird to me that Dubuque can have 2 and Cedar Rapids can't even get 1

Dan tried to bribe Cedar Rapids with a waterpark if they voted No for the Casino. The city told him to GFY, so we never got the waterpark or the casino. Dan Kehl is a cvnt and I bet his son is too.
Last I time saw both of them was in 2002 go a going-away pool party. I believe they moved to North Carolina after. Not sure at all if any of the family is back in Iowa. I knew Dan was part of Riverboat Casino business but didn't know how far. Granted you don't look at that when you 12-13 years old. They were nice to me though.

Agree with the former, bullshit reason on the later. Again, Dubuque has 2 that are miles from each other.

They were some of earliest casinos in the state and they came with locations that pull customers from both Wisconsin and Illinois...

Cedar Rapids spent too many years saying they didn't want a casino,.. When they finally changed their mind the local gaming industry was already built to capacity...
Mostly accurate.

The casino study said an extra $33M in State revenue, but Riverside would be the most negativity affected.

That's why Kehl greased a few palms to get the moratorium extended.
There is no "capacity".
Every casino increases State tax collections. You'll always get new customers.

There is no "capacity".

Of course there is,.. There are only so many gamblers in the area, and they only have so many gambling dollars to waste,.. Gaming in Iowa isn't like Las Vegas,.. People don't fly in for the weekend from all over the country,... Build a new casino and people will come, but it will mostly be at the expense of where they used to go...

Nobody can blame him for trying to protect his interests. I don’t know the inner workings of the IRGC, I doubt you do either, but whatever level of corruption exists is not Kehl’s fault. Don’t hate the player, hate the game.

I worked at Riverside for nearly a decade on the golf course there. I have zero complaints about Dan, and always enjoyed my conversations with him. I always got the impression that he took pride in being able to employ people and improve their quality of life. His son worked on the golf course for a couple summers and was a humble, quiet, hard-working kid. There was never an air of arrogance or entitlement, and I admired that. Kids born into money can very easily become assholes.

All that being said…I think a CR casino would be awesome, and I would THINK that the population increase in the corridor could support another casino. Just my $.02

I fail to see what's wrong with the added competition. Sure at some point "capacity" will be reached but that should be decided by the free market, not lawmakers.

F'ing assholes. It's Cedar Rapids fault in the long run as they turned it down when the Riverside was going to be built. That said, the money should not be leaving Linn County for Washington, Blackhawk, or Dubuque counties. That money should stay here.
No kidding. They should let people spend money on an amusement/adventure park. Or maybe a zoo or damn near any sort of family attraction. Instead they keep going for a casino. I think it’s comical that they keep thinking it will happen.

I can't hate someone that lobbies against something that could affect me? That seems strange not to be able to complain about. You know what, if you're losing money to the new CR casino, MAKE YOURS MORE APPEALING! What the F happened to free market and making people compete for who is the best?

Super. I like my boss too. He actually heavily invested the first time around but we never got it (along with Steve Grey). I'm not sure what Kehl being a nice guy to you, has to being a dick about a CR casino in my universe. I'm glad you like him though.

This is the answer. No offense to Mexican food, but how many Mexican restaurants does CR have? What if one of those is better than the one down the street/in another town? The one that is better will be selected by more people. Kehl just wants to be lazy and collect.

How about we trust the free market here, rather than government lawmakers?

I don’t need another casino - not that this impacts as I live in DSM, but let’s be serious. This is about the casinos using the state legislature to block competition so they don’t have to worry.

I can't tell you who authorized the study, but it was a +$33M for the State.

You don't think people in Cedar Rapids would frequent a casino more often if one was there? It's the second largest city in Iowa. Give them a casino and then be done for awhile.

A casino would not prevent the development of any zoo or amusement/ adventure park. All it would take is an investor group willing to put money into one of those projects.

I wonder if his new casino off of I 80 took money away from the other casinos in Eastern Iowa? I bet he feels really bad about that.

Final thoughts on the whole matter...

1. Since 2014, the year that that first CR Casino attempt was denied, Riverside Casino adjusted gross revenue has grown from $87 million to 131 million. The AGR for Rhythm City Casino was 43M in 2014 and has grown to 112 million in 2023 in Dan K's new palace. I think Dan has done just fine. I suspect that his new digs there cannibalized quite a few dollars from other casinos to grow that much.( Numbers pulled from the Iowa Gaming Commission Report)

2) QC / Clinton/ Muscatine CSA population is approximately 468,000 and contains 4 casinos.

CR/ IC CSA population is approximately 455,000 and its area contains one casino located 40-50 miles from the largest population center.

You know who thinks that population base could support more than one casino? Dan Kehl does. He bought into and expanded in QC. See above. It's ok in the QCs ....but heavens no way in CR/ IC.

3) Since 2014 Johnson and Linn Counties have grown by 25k and show no signs of stopping. It's one of the two places where another casino would make any sense. (Downtown Des Moines the other) It will happen eventually...but not until the right group of investors proposed it. I doubt that an estimated 60 Mil in new casino revenue went unnoticed. If you are Dan and you thought that You could open a $120M casino in CR and still have a $ 100M casino in Riverside.. ..you would make that move. If CR really wanted it they should end the exclusive contract with just one developer.

4) It won't matter to me if a casino ever happens in CR as it's not really my thing. I just wouldn't mind seeing Mr Kehl and the local pearl rattlers squirm if it did happen.

Last) A weekend in Downtown CR with a show at The Paramount or McGrath Amphitheatre, local restaurants and pubs, and a night at the casino all within walking distance of my hotel sounds like a lot more fun than being held captive within the confines of a hotel casino complex located in the middle of a cornfield or the far suburban edge of town with nothing else around it.

That's all I've got

What part is incorrect? That they get upset every time it is shot down or that it isn’t the only bigger attraction they push for?
The city promotes development of numerous projects, of which a casino would be just one of them. There has been massive industrial development in an around the airport, building renovations in the Downtown area, new projects and renovations in the NewBo area as well as other projects scattered around the city. CR has aggressively pursued development projects since the 2008 flood. The pursuit of a casino is the only project that requires a dog and pony show for approval based on some contrived level of "morality" and the only one where the affects on other communities are even considered. The city would certainly support a a different attraction/Amusement venue if a legit developer were to propose it.

What was the case when they had that? Remember when riverside was going to build cr an attraction/amusement park if they stopped pushing the casino?
Maybe the city should try and find a legit developer if they want people spending money in Cedar Rapids.
