14k tickets left for Maryland, 6k for Minny, 20k for Purdue. Meyers, Ike, Daniels, Ott are out and Ott has a confirmed ACL tear. CJB is injured but expected to play. Duzey is out for NW. T Smith may dress but won't play. Brutal news across board pretty much.

I bet there will be a ton of big sets, two TEs and a FB. Just try to run the ball all day long with occasional pass. I don't think there will be more than 20 pass attempts Saturday.

How does Duzey play a few plays a couple weeks ago and now is ruled completely out?

he said that he looks good one day then not the next. I think they are trying to hold guys out to get them 100% faster because they are doing the same thing with Daniels. I think it is a good plan. The goal is to win the division and if they hold guys out this week, then they have the bye the hope is to have Myers, Boettger, Daniels, Smith and Duzey all back for the stretch run.

Probably like J Daniels, in the lineup too early and not effective. Let's hope he wasn't set back by going too early. Hoping to have him back by Maryland.
I agree with you, but am surprised our trainers and staff would take a chance. Maybe this is the byproduct of New Kirk and one of the ramifications.

We don't have to win this game, although it would be nice. We DO have to win the last 5, which can be accomplished if we get healthy. Ferentz knows what he is doing.

Obviously, if we could steal one against psycho Fitz, that would be icing on the cake

Freaking cornholers really F'd us last week with Wiscy. Wiscy will run the table most likely with that easy schedule remaining.

Well if the mentality is to hold guys out and sacrifice a loss (which I know they are not giving up and I know we want our guys healthy) then at some point why not pull CJ if he is really banged up and have him rest too? Not trying to incite anything but man I worry about his health and not having tackles to protect him he is way over exposed. This may very well be an OLD Coach KF style game. It is going to be paint dry type offense and frankly I get why.

Wisconsin and Iowa will both be favored in every game from here on out. More worried about NW, they would have the tie- breaker if they also go 7-1.

We have to lose 2 games to finish below Wisky even if they run the table since we own the tie breaker with them. If we lose 2, then we F'd ourselves.

With how banged up we are and the @ NW game looming that would of been huge if Wiscy would of lost as that would require 3 losses. NW already has a loss and I don't see them winning @ Madison so we could lose to NW and still be fine, now we will have to run table if we lose to NW which is at best 50/50 at this point in time, yikes.

To whom? Their crossovers are Maryland and Rutgers, Minnesota sucks, @ Illinois? Eh, D is too good. NW at home, eh. That was a huge fail by Nebby last week.
At Illinois and at Minnesota are BOTH potential losses. Again, this is not your father's Wisconsin; no running game at all. Did you watch the Nebby game? They can't run the ball.

As much as I hate to say it I do not see Wisky losing another game. Really hope the guys can find a way to keep a 2 game lead after this weekend and for all practical purposes kill Northwestern's chances in the process. A special teams TD would be really welcome this weekend. DK has come close.......

Lets look at each injury individually, their replacement and impact on the team.

Drew Ott insert Parker Hesse. Lose a potential AA DE and replace him with a 240# RS Frosh. Now Iowa is undersized at both DE spots. Hesse has seen quite a few snaps this season so has a little experience. Hopefully Hesse can be in a rotation so he's not banging against 300+ pounders every play.

Ike insert James Daniels. Daniels has never played tackle before and was thrown into the fire last week vs. Illinois. A week of practice as the starter should help his technique and should see a much better effort out of him vs. jNW.

Boone Myers insert Cole Croston. Boone won the starting role but I don't think Cole was too far behind. Cole has seen a lot of PT this season. The talent gap between LT1 and LT2 isn't too significant IMO.

L Daniels insert Wadley/Mitchell. Canzeri is clearly RB1 at this point. Wadley/Mitchell have big upside but can Wadley hang on to the ball? Does Mitchell know the playbook? Like to have depth at RB and KF doesn't think he has it (Source: See Canzeri's 43 carries in 1 game vs. Illinois). Right now Iowa lacks the big power back that KF loves to have.

T Smith insert J Smith. Tevaun is a stud but I think Jerminic is going to be very good and will get better every week. Last week J Smith showed he can step up and stretch the field. This is critical to get the run game going.

Duzey insert HKC/Kittle. Haven't had Duzey all season and he would provide another legit passing threat for CJB. HKC/Kittle have done a solid job so far this season.

I think Ott and Ike's injuries hurt Iowa the most. That is where the ability drop off is greatest from starter to backup. Iowa should be fine and can win @jNW but if more players go down I don't think they have the depth to deal with much more than they are right now.

Even with the injuries Iowa can still win this game but they can't turn the ball over. I just looked back at some of their games and Michigan ran for 200 against them, Ball State ran for 180, and there was another team, and Duke ran for 180. So I think Iowa can run the ball at least somewhat against Northwestern. Looking at Northwestern's offense. Jackson gets a ton of carries but his average isn't that great. Half the games he has had less than a 4 ypc average, 3.5 against Eastern Illinois, 3.4 against Duke and 2.1 against Michigan. Their line is ok but not great. Thorson is just not very good. He has had three games with 50% or below completion percentage, and has only 4 TDs to 4 INTs. Their receiving corp is not very good either.

All the close games they have won have come down to their Defense forcing TOs. So if Iowa can run the ball relatively well and not turn it over I think they will win.

I think the key is NW defense going against the Iowa offense - They are going to get to CJ often. I would plan on NW blitzing every play - and set up a game plan accordingly.

Screen Passes all day, throw in some short routes to TE's and we can dink and dunk the ball down the field all day

Fitz knows how to beat Iowa. He knows what plays are guaranteed for 6 or 7 yards (short outs, hitches, etc.) and knows where to put defenders where we want to go. His vendetta against the Hawks is powerful.

Fitz knows gainst Iowa it is a numbers game. Bring your safeties up, or at least 1 safety up. 7 blockers against 8 or 9 defenders in the box. Offensively, he usually does a good job of taking advantage of our safeties being 12 yards deep and corners being (usually) 7-10 yards deep on the snap. He takes what the Iowa defense gives you. We will have to be tough in the Red Zone and keep them to field goals.

If this was North Texas, CJB wouldn't be playing. I don't expect his rushing ability to be a weapon. It will be pretty vanilla. 13-10, 16-13.

Now for the glass half full point of view.

Other than Ott, our defense is healthy. The defense has been great, especially against the run. NW has not done much through the air. Shut down the Wildcats running game, and the Hawks won't need many points to win. Probably ends up looking alot like the game at Wisconsin.

Iowa's pass blocking has not been good because of the inexperience at tackles. But the middle of the O-line is solid. Canzeri's probably going to run the ball 40 times again this week. For god's sakes Kirk, let the fullbacks carry it a few times, KF 1.0 did! CJ is tough, makes quick decisions, and buys himself time. J. Smith is a weapon.

Special teams have been great. Need Kidd and Koehn to keep up the good work, and maybe a big return or two out of Desmond.

NW has injuries too. Every team has injuries.

NW is not an intimidating place to play. Small crowd, with lots of yellow in the stands. Hawks already won at Wisconsin, Evanston won't be as tough.

NW beat a mediocre Ball State team by only 5 and got hammered by Michigan. We kicked the crap out of the Wildcats last year, and we're a better team this year. Go Hawks!

Great points here. But how 'bout this too?
  • Mildcats have lost both starting safeties so I've heard.
  • They just had the crap beat out of them in a total Big 10 slobber knocker.
  • They have to be wounded.
  • Vegas had us favored by 2 pts this morning. Right now it's 2.5 pts. That's a good sign even though it's a small margin.
Great teams find ways to win. This team has shown they are special and they have gotten tougher in the 4th quarter when things have gotten tough.

This is their moment and they know it. My prediction: HAWKS WIN!!!!!

So 50+ runs and 20 passes? I doubt that. Northwestern is way too good for us to get away with that.

Totally agree. I don't understand why people think Wiscy has this cakewalk schedule compared to ours.

Combined conference record of their remaining opponents: 3-9; ours, 2-10. At Minnesota will be a rivalry game at the end of the season, and Illinois (also on the road) is a team that beat Nebby, a team Wisconsin by rights just lost to. Yes, we play the Bugs on the road, but I'm damned glad we didn't have to play the Illini away from Kinnick.

Their odds of going 6-0 may be slightly better than ours, but only very slightly, in my opinion.

You heard incorrectly. Both starting safeties are fine.

IA needs to have CJB in the game till the end, meaning, get the ball OUT of his hands quickly! If he gets plastered again, you'll see Weigers jogging in. You All know how this works and the plays IA will need to run on offense with CJB.

On defense -- STOP NU. Freshman q.b. Big game for linebackers Saturday. JJewell - lead the way!

Special teams - I doubt NU kicks the ball to D King the entire game. I hope they do, but doubt it. Koehn - be ready for a bunch of field goals.

I expect you'll see King and Mabin playing tighter off of the LOS than our corners did in previous years. I suspect that Parker will scheme to make Thorson go over the top rather than underneath. He's a different skill set than what NW has had in previous years.

Illinois can MOST DEFINITELY beat Wisky!
They are a tough out and were very close to beating us on Saturday. Couple different bounces and might be crying in our beer this week over the loss.
Don't be surprised if Wisky comes out of Champain/Urbana with a L

It's possible the opposite is true, that it's harder to beat a comparable team on the road when the atmosphere is sleepy.

The slant route to Clinton Solomon for a 70+ yd touchdown against LSU........that was a nice play.
Fish story. It was 57.

So 50+ runs and 20 passes? I doubt that. Northwestern is way too good for us to get away with that.

Michigan only passed 23 times and ran 46.

Against Wisconsin Iowa had 21 passes and 40 rushes.

Iowa won't run more than 70 plays so there won't be 50+ rushes. You will see something more like the Wisconsin game.
