Kids Day Practice

Any additional observations on the passing game? Specifically QBs and WRs? Thanks!!
Unfortunately nothing too exciting to report, but admittedly I missed some of the action chasing my 2 year old around. Play calling was pretty basic, Petras took a couple deep shots, don’t recall to who, but one was to a WR in double coverage and was under thrown- WR never even saw it. I want to say Padilla had a completion to Bostick near the sideline that was ruled incomplete that would have picked up a nice chunk of yards. Padilla dropped a nice ball over top of the corner and in front of the safety to Lachey on a corner route. Lachey ran some nice routes and was definitely on the same page as Padilla. Don’t recall seeing any wheel routes or dump offs to any of the RBs out of the backfield. I’m going with the glass half full perspective and chalking it up to our defense being very good and Kirk/Brian keeping the playcalling very fundamental.
Edit: not sure if the breakdown of completions is available somewhere but it sure seemed like 90% of the completion were to TEs

Thanks for sharing. Always fun to read what people saw/experienced versus someone just searching Twitter and spamming the board.

Cooper DeJean is the FG holder.

DO IT !!

I found this quote from KF about Aaron Graves from Dochterman's write up of the practice to be really eye opening:

“Just the way he’s practicing, I think we would be crazy to say we’re going to redshirt him."

Now, we all expected Graves to be really good. But, he wasn't here in the Spring, he's a true freshman, and camp is only like half over. IDK that I have ever heard KF so emphatic about playing a true freshman at this point in the pre-season, let alone a lineman.

Think he’s seen enough kids leave early…..He’s changed his views on redshirting players that can contribute….. if they’re good enough to contribute as a true freshman they probably ain’t playing 4 years anyway

maybe Nil will change that but it’s doubtful

It's not that he said he wouldn't redshirt him. It's that he was so emphatic about him. You never see him do that with a true freshman so early.

Yep not contradicting you….. it’s just even more telling as deep as we already are on the DLine
Yeah, true. This DL was already so good. For him to make an impact would be that much more impressive.

(And I didn't think you were disagreeing. I was just clarifying why I found the statement so notable.)

Maybe the most promising news coming out of Kid's Day concerned the special teams.

Excited to hear about consistency from the PK-game.

Also, Coach Woods deserves a big tip of the cap ... having Cooper DeJean as a holder is probably nothing short of a stroke of genius. For those who are uninformed ... Cooper has pretty high-end speed (he had a ton of rushing TDs in high school) ... and, more excitingly, he was also quite a prolific high school QB. The guy can pass the football!

The point being ... not only are Iowa's place-kickers showing some promise ... but we also have a trigger-man as holder who could run a mean run-pass option on the fake. That's cool!

Of course, hearing about Tory Taylor ... doing Tory things ... that's always music to my ears!

The news about the WRs either out or injured ... that helps to develop depth ... but it has the unfortunate side-effect that the "top-guys" don't develop as quickly as we'd need or hope.

Similarly deal as it relates to the OL. It helps to develop depth ... which could be okay in the long term. However, as it relates to the player development of our top guys right now ... it kinda sucks.

The only things about the O that were promising, concerned how our RBs were looking ... and the possible emergence of Addison Ostrenga at TE. Given our concerns at WR ... if we can legitimately play 3 TE sets ... and have those TEs demonstrate some versatility ... then that at least gives our O some options.

Thanks Homer, but how do you feel about Chevy Chase & the fletch movies? 🤔

I haven't seen all the video but I don't see Petras or Padilla looked better than Joe.

Joe got more throws and more completions, 54.7% Showed good mobility. One int was batted up by the receiver (I think). Didn't look like many deep completions but the only two throwing TDs in the scrimmage.

yeah, i am going to enjoy X and the Graves Digger (is there a shirt yet?) over the next 3 seasons.

we might lose a freshman RB (or 2) after 3 seasons, as well

KF has been recruiting some studs. unfortunately we only get to enjoy them as Hawkeyes for a short time.
