Posting to see if everyone else with Verizon has horrible data coverage on game day around and in Kinnick. Calls & Texts seem to work decent but data is pretty much DOA for me once game day crowd picks up. I know they installed antenna's in Kinnick but that seems to be for US Cellular only? Been a while since I've read anything about it, so thought I'd check in here.

Agreed. Sigh.

Improvements in data service would go a long way towards bringing more people to the stadium, imo.

I know they have done quite a bit to address this. However, isn't every stadium in the country dealing with the same problem? I can't imagine Ohio State Michigan Tennessee LSU Etc have any better cell reception or service then we do at kinnick

Can't speak for verizon but ATT has been great the past 5 years. It used to be miserable but no issues since the improved towers went up.

(One of the few if any, things ATT has going for it over verizon)

If it makes you feel better, Verizon data is pretty much worthless in Beaver Stadium beginning a few hours before a game thru about an hour after the game. I would have thought that something like this would have improved thru the years with advancements in technology, but it's actually worse today than when I got my first smartphone 6-7 years ago (or whenever it was).

Verizon was much better this past weekend than I can ever remember. I was even able to send and receive messages via Snap Chat.
I will agree with this...a little better than in recent years, I wasn't waiting 2 hours for text to go through, maybe a few minutes or so.

Got to the stadium early for the Wyoming game and was able to easily send out one photo, but once the crowd arrived it was back to "normal." Agree with BigOHawk - maybe a little better.

Why do you need to use data while at the game? WATCH THE DAMN GAME SON

Look, there are a good dozen TV timeouts. Perfect opportunities to text mom pictures, and stream video from the game. It would be nice if they increased bandwidth for game days, but I know it’s probably technically difficult and expensive.

My issue really isn't the game time, its pre/post game where it's just horrible. Can't check scores or monitor Twitter for game day news. Game time it would be nice to check twitter to see chatter about significant game moments i.e. injuries, bad calls, etc. (Yes I could get a AM radio), but this is 2017.

Verizon around the stadium is still terrible. I was trying to find out where my buddy was tailgating by my calls and texts weren't going through. Had to send out carrier pigeons in order to make contact with anyone around there.

Welcome to the new millennium. Screw having the real experience..I need to selfie/tweet/instagram about it because it's all about me.

Yeah, it would be great to check scores, be able to use your phone at halftime, etc. But put your f****** phone down and enjoy the actual experience. The matrix has you...unplug.

That sounds like an improvement. I usually can't even send a text.

Because there are about 12 minutes of game action in a 3.5 hour+ timeframe. Because I have kids at home who might like a picture of the stadium. Because I want to see what people who are watching on TV are saying about that replay the stadium won't show us. Because the other-game scores are not up to date and I'd like to know what else is going on in CFB that day.

Yeah, what he said.

I feel Verizon coverage has slightly improved starting last year, but it's still very hit and miss as far as texting is concerned. I have the Score app open to get updates on other games. Don't use snap talk or any social media.

+1. Phone stays behind. Didn't need one when I went to my first game 25 years ago, don't need one now.

was expecting the first reply to be something about old white men and dial phones...LOL

I use social media and a variety of technology and communication platforms in my work...and personal life. But when I'm there at an event or with people I care about...I'm THERE...in the moment.

Whether or not it is affecting people's decision to go to games, I don't really care. I just know that when I'm at a game, I would like to be able to have signal for a variety of things (meeting up with people I'm not sitting with, check scores, make post-game plans, etc). They should fix it (if possible) regardless of whether some of you guys are too cool and don't need technology during games.

In today's world, the person in the stadium has the LEAST amount of information of anyone watching the game. My phone is the only way to fill in the gaps. I'm the last to know about injuries. We don't get stats. We get very limited replays.

How many replays do I miss that I have to hear about via text message? Just last week, I didn't get to see the AJE QB roughing penalty nor the sideline late hit (on Rugumba) that happened 2 plays later, and had to resort to texting friends who were watching at home and trusting their description/opinion of the plays.

We get barely any stats at the game. I don't know the run/pass breakdown or any really really basic bits of information.

Some guy behind me found on twitter that Butler had a dislocated elbow, but otherwise I had no idea what happened. Wadley's status was a total runaway rumor in the stands, no one knowing if it was doghouse or injury. Twitter didn't seem to help.

I'M TRYING TO WATCH THE DAMN GAME AND MY PHONE HELPS ME UNDERSTAND WHAT IS GOING ON IN FRONT OF ME.

GET OFF YOUR HIGH HORSE YOU POO-FLINGING MONKEY DIPSHIT.

EDIT: I'M THE JACKASS WHO TAKES A ROSTER TO EVERY GAME TO INFORM EVERYONE AROUND ME WHO THE FUK JUST MADE A TACKLE ON KICK COVERAGE

I get some of your points. On the other hand...I don't need to have the chord structure explained to me to enjoy a great song.

What was the penalty? Why is the ball being respotted? What's with the review? What's the call? Yeah...gotta have that stuff. I don't necessarily need to know how much gatorade the backup QB consumed. A lot of the time, even the guys on the sidelines don't know the reality of an injury until the game is over. The opponent doesn't.

I'm good with game situation stuff. Personal preference I guess.

What about old black men or hispanics?

That's a pretty good straw man you have there. Injuries to critical players and determining why touchdowns are being removed from the scoreboard are slightly different than what you pretend people are talking about. If the University had gotten out of the '90s with any of their numerous scoreboard upgrades over the years (and showed relevant replays), we could see stats and check out scores from around the country without having to pull out a cell phone.

Yeah, I always have the roster link from this site on my phone during a game, so I don't have to ask. Has come in handy several times over the years.

Any play that is even 1% controversial never gets replayed at Kinnick in my experience. So frustrating, people aren't going to riot if we get to re-watch a potential turnover.

Not sure you understand the term strawman. Nobody literally wants to know about Gatorade consumption...so it's not suggested as the foundation for a false argument. It was an exaggeration.

So you're telling me they show no replays in Kinnick and show no other game scores from around the country? I agree that they can do better, and they should have the ballz to show questionable plays.... but if you want a constant ticker of scores from every corner of the country and replays of everything, maybe you're more of a "watch it on TV" type. I guess that's why there are 4,000 unsold tickets for tomorrow.

They replay about 60% of important plays. If that.

They run the scores very haphazardly, with Thursday night scores and scores of Saturday night games run as prominently as games that are happening right now.

Have you ever been to a game at Kinnick Stadium? It doesn't sound like it.

Yeah, I make about half the games. I just don't pay much that attention to the board...apart from in-game stats. I like to watch the field, the sidelines between plays (I sit fairly close) and talk with my seatmates. I travel from out of state...so I take in every minute I have with my buddies.

I agree that they can and should do more with the board. No question. But it wouldn't keep me from attending the game.

So you are always on top of what the score is and how many timeouts we have left, good work.

No, I'm completely comfortable with my understanding of the term - and the fact that it is two words, not one. You created an argument that no one was making in order to refute it and make your position seem more rational. The misrepresentation and/or fabrication of an another's words for the sole purpose of easily knocking them down in the context of debate is pretty much the textbook definition of a straw man.

But I wouldn't expect someone in marching band to know anything about football or forensic speech, so I won't take it personally. ;)

I had ZERO service before the game last week. It was AWFUL.

In the stadium the new Wifi is great. The password is fight4iowa

I couldn't send or receive a text.

Thank you. Did the University publish this information at some point, or how did you find it out?

Good question Bond. I couldn't find it in the program and Mrs. Herk and I looked pretty hard. But the folks who sit next to us knew. Basically we just let everyone around us know.

Also, I think this was discussed last year but I'm still curious, are the little white boxes around the top of the stadium the Wifi? If not, what the heck are they?
