Fickle Fans

After last week's beat down of Washington - everybody was amped about the Hawks. This week, they suck, coaches suck and the sky is falling. To add to the negativity the same cast of characters piled on about firing Kirk, benching McNamara, record inflated because we play bad teams, etc.

Nobody wants to admit that it is tough to win on the road, especially at MSU. I was there for our last two wins in East Lansing, the crowd is loud and hostile. I'm willing to bet few of the board whiners have been there.

My honest take for this game. We were flat and they came out fresh and ready to go. The bye week really helped them. Our defense played way too conservative against Chiles. Instead of pinning our ears back and going after him, we held our blocks and let him pick us apart. They had well over 200 yards of offense on first down, we were always backing up. Once again we played one half of football.

Yes, our secondary is not good. Losing Castro is a huge loss for us. Then Entringer went down. DB depth wasn't good to start the year. Parker has been saying that since the start of the year. McNamara played one decent half, he couldn't hit the broad side of a barn in the first half. I thought Hill was playing.

Lester needs to open it up early. Our stubborness to run when they stack the box is not good. Getting stuffed on first and second down and having third and long, doesn't work. That is Bob Cummings football.

Bottom line, MSU played better. They have better team speed. RB's were elusive and strong runners. They beat us on the edge all day. They won both lines if scrimmage and moved the ball well.

MY 9-3 prediction now looks to be questionable. Wiscy looks very good, UCLA is getting better and it's a Friday night game out there, Maryland beat USC yesterday and Nebraska is much improved. I easily could see two losses.
I usually have your back on your posts but not this one - wtf? Why so long?

Yeah watching Lester's O run the ball into a brick wall 20 times a game is eerily similar to what BF did. Wonder why that is. 🤔
You have seen what happens when Cade Mc tosses it haven’t you? I’d rather take a chance on Kaleb breaking one at some point.

Last week was fools gold. Iowas complete game, Kirk’s masterpiece of this season, was a sub 350 yard day fueled by Washington repeatedly going for it in risky positions and turning it over. They have a pathetic pass attack that is likely going to finish as the worst in the country. Their qb failed to get it near the end zone on a Hail Mary from mid field while repeatedly failing to make routine throws on target, rarely hitting someone in stride.

Anyone who was high on this team was high on glue.

My fearless forecast is that this is a 6-7 win team.

7-5 program before and going forward. Hire who you want and we are still a 7-5 program that has overperformed with a horrible offense. Both sides of the ball are now 7-5.

Hope is not, never was, and never will be a strategy. You need a plan. Not a concept of a plan. You need a real plan. Iowa's should be to can KF and his ENTIRE staff ASAP. But if you're looking for hope, cast your eyes on Bloomington, Indiana, where a first-year coach has Indiana poised to play for a Big Ten title in his first season on the job. When he arrived, he said he planned on doing two things: winning and entertaining. Check and check.

Of course, Indiana is a football factory that went to the Rose Bowl for its first and only time as recently as 1967, so the guy did step into a pretty sweet gig . . .
Check back in 5 years to really see what the Indiana coach has done in Bloomington. One year does not make a trend.

You lost me after saying cade played a decent half! Lol

He is not a division 1 starter at any other school.

Yeah. The problem isn't Nebraska. The problem is Iowa. They looked bad on both sides of the ball yesterday and if they play like that the rest of the year it's going to end with a thud. They need Castro back, and I'm not sure what he did to get benched, but we need Lee out on that right corner as well because the others were really bad yesterday.

The QB thing is a total mystery as well, but there's nothing new there. The passing game has dragged the team all year.
The announcers said it was his ankle.

This guy is just one of those "everyone should just shut up and appreciate what KF does for us because we're just lowly Iowa, we're not sexy, and bringing in a different HC might not work out" simps.
Kirk is a pussy that no longer cares whether or not the team wins. No pulse, no nut sack, no drive to try to be the best. Rather....one excuse after another. Total bullshit and so unfair to the players....especially those that came back rather than jumping to the NFL.

McNamara led Michigan to a conference championship and CFP appearance.

Quarterbacks have looked bad at Iowa for a long time. Stanley is the last Iowa quarterback to look decent. Since Stanley, it’s been an absolute shit show. Petras was terrible; Padilla was terrible; Labas was below average the one game he got in; Deacon Hill was terrible; Lainez could run but looked terrible in one appearance; and McNamara keeps getting worse.

Call it the Ferentz Effect, but I think it’s time to start giving these quarterbacks a bit of a pass. It’s Ferentz.

Yep. He coaches them into being petrified zombies out there. He instills in them the same mindset that he coaches with... to play scared of what could go wrong instead of motivated by what could go right.

that was with far superior talent around him & a coach who wanted to go to the next level. also that was before all of the injuries, was he at one point a D-1 starter? yes.. but no longer.

you could argue that it didn't matter who the michigan qb was that year because they had so much more talent than almost everyone they played

McNamara game managed for a loaded team and suffered a debilitating injury, then another. He is a shell of what he once was, and it wasn’t great to begin with. His arm is not strong, his footwork is bad, and his vision is terrible. He is struggling to complete out routes and crossing patterns on target, you rarely see him even capable of hitting someone in stride.

All that said, I’m fine blaming Ferentz, because if he isn’t causing him to be a head case, he picked a severely constrained player to QB his team.

I agree with all of this.

Cade is a game manager at his best.

The point is he, like so many others who have played the position since KOK left, have sucked ass—none of which is reflective of their actual abilities.

Last year the defense willed them to some wins. The D just isn't good enough this year to do that. I will say the offense has been generally better but still has a long ways to go. The worrisome thing for me is that Iowa looked disinterested to be there on Saturday night.

I’m fine with a “game manager” type QB leading the Iowa offense — so long as he is mobile.

Besides accuracy issues, IMO what has shackled Iowa’s offense since Beathard graduated is a succession of QBs who were unable or unwillingly to make plays with their feet. In modern offenses, this is obviously a baseline necessity.

….and I’m not talking about a Marcus Mariotta“dual threat” type QB. Rather, a QB who can scramble away from heavy pressure to buy time and locate a receiver or tuck and run for a 1st down to keep drives alive a few times per game.

Nate Stanley used to line up under center and run QB sneaks for 4 yards all day—made tons of plays with those monster feet.

He's not a game manager. A lot of people, me included, wondered how Iowa landed him just 1 year removed from a B1G championship. He lost his starting job to McCarthy after going 9-18 for 136 yards vs an overmatched Colorado St in the 2022 opener. Sound familiar? The backups went 9-10 for 70 yards in that same game enroute to a 44 point victory.

Harbaugh started McCarthy in game 2 and never looked back. Kirk and Brian proceeded to bet the farm on the 9-18 guy.

Ironically, my dad said the same thing. He said they looked disinterested. He claims he quit watching at halftime.

Let’s be honest: Kaleb Johnson is the Iowa offense.

This. He's not even a game manager. At some point in a game ( or season) that QB needs to actually lead you to a win. Now it's clearly not all on Mac, while he's not good I rarely see receivers actually open. However, when guys are actually open he's not comfortable in the pocket and makes so many throws that just aren't even close. MIchigan St had their LB's and even their DB's playing 100% downhill the entire game. It's just not sustainable to expect your offense to beat a defense doing this with our scheme, talent, QB, etc. Our o line has actually been incredible this year compared to last when you think about what they have to go against week in and week out. The whole thing needs blown up.

Iowa doesn't need a special QB for their system. They need a QB that hits the easy throws and keeps the defense honest with some mobility. For some reason, Iowa can search the ends of the earth and not find them. At the same time I watch DII games with better QB play.
