Kirk Ferentz and Tim Lester Sort of Sound Like LBJ in 1960

After having privately stated that he had zero interest in VP the vice presidential nomination if he failed to obtain the Democratic nomination for President, LBJ did a 180 and immediately accepted VP nomination. When asked by Sam Rayburn why he accepted VP nomination when he had emphatically stated he had no interest in the VP ticket, LBJ simply said, "I know that I had said that, but I am a lot smarter than I was two weeks ago, Sam."

With that anecdote as an analogy, it seems KF and/or Lester are "a lot smarter than they were two weeks ago" at the Iowa State debacle when they took Kaleb out and did not put Sullivan in at the goal line, with results that cost us the ballgame.

Can anyone explain how they both are "a lot smarter than they were two weeks ago"? It seems to me if they can figure it out yesterday for the Minnesota game, they should have had it figured out two weeks ago.

The one consolation I took after that Iowa State loss was that in the past Iowa has gone on and had really good seasons. Here's hoping. I know everyone has Iowa losing big to Ohio State. Tim Lester has two weeks to prepare. If the offense can score a couple touchdowns who knows.

One time, the other times it led to five loss seasons

Easy, they started reading this board 😉

I will forever be pissed off that they fvcked that game up, but as I like to say.

Sometimes you can’t get it right, until you get it wrong.

What? Besides 2002.... every year losing to the Clowns is an indication of a bad season.

You're working hard to make yourself feel better here. Other than 2002, just about every other season in which Iowa dropped the game to Iowa St, it ended up being a very disappointing season (2005, 2007, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2022 all perfect examples). Before that you'd have to go back to Hayden's early years.

Might wanna check the history books on that.

2022 8-5
2014 7-6
2012 4-8
2011 7-6
2007 6-6
2005 7-5
2002 11-2
2001 7-5
2000 3-9

Correct. The trend goes that in all but one season where a Kirk team lost to Iowa State did we go on to win 7 or fewer games in the regular season. 2022 sort of bucked the trend of straight 7 or worse win seasons as we won the Music City Bowl against a mediocre Kentucky team with a bunch of opt-outs and got to 8 wins.............

You have to go back to 1981 to find the last time Iowa finished with 8 wins in a regular season (prior to 2002) that they lost to Iowa State.

On the other side, only 3 times in program history has Iowa ever lost less than 4 games in a season they lost to Iowa State (2002, 11-2; 1906, 2-3; 1907, 3-2). On the plus side, we did win conference titles in 2002 and 1907*. :)

*- MVIAA title (or as it would become later known......the Big 8)

Not really.

Under KF, Iowa losing to ISU rarely resulted in missing out on the postseason, but more than once, an OK Iowa team lost to a pitiful ISU team (teams that finished with 2 or 3 wins). That's a flipping embarrassment.

The seasons we didn't play a postseason game in the modern bowl era after losing to Iowa State were 1978, 1980, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2007, and 2012.

So 7 of the 16 seasons we lost to Iowa State since the series resumed in 1977.

I think the implementation of Sullivan, a running QB, in the redzone is the best example of Kirk and Lester learning from their mistakes. Cade just doesn't have it as a passing QB in the redzone, ISU proved that. So they added Sullivan, who adds a layer of depth to the offense as possible running option. For the most part, they've just pounded it in with KJ, but that shovel pass from Sully to Estranga against Troy is an example of what they can do in the redzone.

So yes, I would say they are smarter than they were two weeks ago.

Do we have a new QB who can pass in the next week? If not then we're toast.

Quinn Shulte is gonna be like 14 steps too slow to recover when our CBs get burned by OSUs receivers.

A couple TDs isn’t going to cut it.

Iowa lost in 1981 to ISU and were B1G Co-Champs.

1981 was one of my favorite Iowa seasons. Iowa beat Nebraska, UCLA and Michigan and it all changed from that season going forward.

People seem lost to the notion that this ISU team is also very good. Look at their common opponent with Michigan in back to back weeks.

They’ll probably drop 2 or 3 games in conference, but they have around 25% chance of making the playoffs.

The answer is no. And yes, we are toast. Only consolation is OSU plays at Oregon the next week and will be looking way ahead. They know score a couple of TDs vs Iowa, you win. But OSU doesn't play like Michigan or PSU, score a few and coast in. OSU will score 5 TDs, at least, then coast into at Oregon.
At the mininum. OSU 45 Iowa 7. Worst case, OSU 59 Iowa O. Chip Kelly brings a whole new ball game to OSU. Key for Hawks, not getting Johnson hurt and not losing by 50 plus.

Ye of little faith. Hawks have a couple of weeks to figure this one out. Get some guys healthy and see what happens. The offense has a huge task ahead of itself. Enjoy “Script OHIO”… hopefully that will be the Buck’s highlight that Saturday!!

I don't think comparing a coaches actions to some political event 16 election cycles ago is a decent analogy .

Being a fan would be simpler if everything on the field was exactly what the coaches wanted. Then you could blame all failures on coaching, instead of players failing to execute.

On second thought, we already do that.

Even with perfect execution, better p[layers can counter the best plans of a coach and execution by the players.
