This is not to split hairs. But when kittle caught that first down pass on i beleive the last drive. why in the hell did he flip the ball to ref? So he could get it spotted before are offense was set. i thought he should of flipped it on the ground since the the clock was stopped for movement of chains. They also started the clock as soon as it was spotted. i know if I was ferentz I would take a fifty thousand dollar fine to bitch about this officiating crew and maybe this could send a message to the team and big ten this shit has to stop.

OP is correct. If you are the team that is behind at the end of the game, leave the ball on the ground and let the ref root around to get it spotted. Once the ball is spotted, the clock starts. Hell, you'd be better off flipping the ball over the refs head so that it takes more time to spot the ball. Handing the ball to the ref just costs your team precious seconds.

Everyone in my section was yelling about that.. they started that game clock with 38 on the playclock.. so dumb

Some refs will call you for a "delay of game" if you don't give them the ball. I know have seen it called in college football before. I think in the PAC 12 they called it because a team was running hurry up and the WRs would set the ball on the ground and not hand it to the official (i.e allowing their team to get set up and making the official move to get the ball). With the way the crew was working yesterday I would not of been surprised to see them call that.

then I guess every time a player gets tackled with the ball and he pushes it a head thats a delay of game.

Any ref that would do that should be fired. There isn't a requirement to hand the ball to the ref after being tackled. WTF?

I cannot remember the game, but I remember seeing it call in a PAC 12 game. I think it was Oregon when they ran their hurry up offense. The receivers kept dropping the ball after getting up and making the officials move to get it. Well after 2-3 times, the Umpire threw his flag and called a delay of game penalty vs them. Mind you this was before the 8th official was added.

I was shocked to see it called myself, but it was. After that, every WR handed the ball to an official.

What OP fails to understand is we gave up 38 points to a terrible offense. Officiating had little to do with it.

This is a bad team folks. 6-6 is looking tough right now.

Depends on if the team is in a hurry up. If the player is making a spot and just moving it forward that's no big deal. Most officials can get to that, What I was quoting was more spots on the outside and downfield.

But with the way the McGinn crew was working, I would of not been shocked to see them call anything that day. Strangest game I remember watching. Just seemed like the refs could only see Black jerseys. Like the white jersey's were invisible. Now I am not making the excuse, but how many college games have you watched where a team committed only a false start??? Doesn't seem right. Iowa didn't do themselves any favors by playing crappy, but it did suck to have some untimely penalties and it seems to be happening more and more this year.

I had a buddy of mine who officiates and he even said that its very rare that a team only commits one penalty. He personally thinks that the refs were paid off or had money on the game. he talked about who had what keys and what guys were looking where and he said that there is no way the facemark on CJB should of been missed. Also said the PI on Scheel should of been called. He also talked about how the deep wing I think that's the term should of been asking for help on the Carr TD. Said it was to close for him to call. I don't know, this is just what he was rambling on about during the game.

This might be a valid argument for a team with a great two-minute offense and a coaching staff with tremendous clock management skills. Unfortunately Iowa falls under neither of those categories.

I'm kind of a wierdo, but I've wondered before, why do football players, after a play is over, almost always look around for a ref to toss the ball to? I see nothing wrong with just dropping the damn thing.

Like I said before some officials will be pricks about it. Even at the lower levels officials tell the players to hand them the ball so they can get it set and continue the flow of the game. If a player doesn't hand it to them, they will remind them and then can flag them for a delay of game (saw it happen a Pac 12 game).

If a player drops it, then an official has to go get it and then pass it to the umpire/center judge and then set it down. It takes time and while the clock is running. And now with some of these "hurry up offenses" they want the officials to get the ball set right away.

I personally don't care, I just wish they would leave it lay and have the ball boy come get it.

I'm pretty sure Walter Payton handed the ball to the officials a grand total of zero times in his career.
