We signed a waiver, too, but could always opt out if we didn't want to be filmed or photographed for something.

Not a lawyer. I’ve been used by the college for promotional videos a dozen times. It has always been voluntary but they’ve never asked me to sign anything. I always got the impression that I could have refused at any point. I just never had an issue with that.

If a private company came into the college to film, and wanted to use my image in their marketing, I’d almost certainly have an issue with that.

My question, if the speaker is using the event to promote his business, then why isn’t the school charging him a fee? This is sort of reminding me of a time in middle school when we were called to an “assembly” that turned out to be an infomercial for some Evelyn Wood type learning system.

What level is this school? University or younger?

Seems like a REALLY bad idea for a public elementary to high school if the person is polarizing at all and giving opinion.

If you are a teacher, I would tell your principal you do not consent to being in the movie and ask if they would prefer you not to attend and will find coverage for you.

This seems like the most reasonable approach. A few years ago, I helped judge a charity BBQ competition that the Food Network did a segment on. Cameraman came into the room where we were judging to get stock footage, before we actually started tasting the entries. They simply gave us the option of leaving the room for 5-10 minutes if we didn’t want to be filmed. No waiver, signatures, etc.

It is for their business the school gets a free assembly, i guess is the trade.
They filmed the entire audience because there was audience participation.
This was for high school.
