Let's look at the bright side...

to the star gazers of the other teams these are the returning players from a class that was rated 25th by ESPN

top 50 39th overall Woodbury at center
top 100 75th overall Gesell at PG
From the 2011 class top 100 90th over all RSSR Uthoff at PF by ESPN
Jok before knee surgery was top 5 in his class by every site and #1 by NY2LA

Clemmons was also part of that top 25 class in 2012 that will be a SR this fall here are the players that will join them this summer

4* by ESPN Moss
4* by 247 Hutton
4* by a publication dedicated to BB Fleming
3* by most Wagner

unrated Williams and a 6th yet to be named, Jok is getting better every year and did not start to really recover till his SR year in HS. and it seems like some have already thrown Ellingson into the trash because he needed a RS year because of a foot injury.

these are the facts about the returning players;
6'9 Uthoff led the team in blocks, was 2nd in scoring at 12.2 ppg and 2nd in rebounding with 218 total rebounds vs White who had 248 total rebound so much for blocked shots or rebounding as Uthoff was the 2nd leading scorer, 2nd leading Rebounder and leading shot blocker,

Gesell was the team 4th leading scorer behind these White, Uthoff and Olaseni, MG main duty is to get assists which he did by avg'ing 4 apg with 135 and just 61 TO's for a 2-1 ratio he also had 33 stl on the season.

Jok was 5th on the team in scoring despite not starting till the BT season even so he ended up avg'ing 7.0 ppg, 2.6 rpg and 1.3 apg in 19.9 mpg.

Woodbury was 6th in scoring at 6.6 ppg and ended the season avg'ing these. 5.2 rpg, 19 steals and 13 blocks, the rebounding puts him as the 3rd leading rebounder behind these White and Uthoff and ahead of Olaseni who was the teams 4th leading rebounder and Woody only avg'd 20.5 mpg

IA return 4 starters and 5 out of the top 7 scorers. a team that returns 3 SR starters and 5 of their top 7 scorers is not going to take a step back not with that type of star power returning. and the 6th man Clemmons will be a SR as well and he had these for stats,

19.9 mpg 4.8 ppg 1.9 rpg, 1.9 apg, 24 steals on the season and ended up shooting 37.3% from 3 on the season not to bad for a player that will be the 6th man on next years team.

First no one cares what our seniors to be were rated when they were 18yrs old coming out of HS. It is completely irrelevant now that they have been here this long and are 21-22yrs old.

Second can save yourself some typing in the future with your long winded paragraphs Recapping players stats. It's an iowa website I think we all have know who each player is and their background and approximate stats.

As others have pointed out, he was a good shot blocker but gets lost frequently on defense. It will have to be Uthoff's team and Gesell is going to have to shoot better and become more of a scoring threat. I hope Woodbury can learn to stay out of foul trouble because we will struggle without him against true big guys. I think the two players that can really help us next year as Frosh are Hutton and Flemming. I am looking forward to seeing Hutton play defense as his coach called him the best defender in the country. That's an upgrade over Oglesby and Jok on the perimeter. Fleming is going to have to help handle the ball and hopefully he can knock down some 3 balls. I feel he will be the most Big Ten ready due to the level of competition he has seen this year. I think we will be ok but I would love to see Fran get a JUCO power forward that can bang down low.
Agree, White was our only consistent scorer and player. Olaseni did some great things early on and then faded away mid season and picked it back up towards the end. He was a good player, but I think he can be replaced. His defense was good, but against physical post players it struggled.

I agree that Utoff/Gessell/Clemmons have to lead the show next year. Those 3 are going to be key in Iowa's success. I look for all 3 to be consistent contributors to the team. I also think Uhl improves next year. The kid is pretty athletic, he just played tentative for most of the year. In the games where he relaxed and let the game come to him, he played pretty good. Showed he can shoot the 3 ball and is not afraid to attack the lane. I think he will be a good one moving forward.

The two freshman I am excited about are Wagner and Moss. I think both of these kids are going to come in and make a small impact next year. I agree if Flemming can adjust and shoot the 3ball with some consistency, we have a player on our hands and he will fill a much needed outside shooting role. Wagner just screams athlete and he runs as fast if not faster than Olaseni. could be a good break away man. Also Moss has a wide range of abilities and his game is solid. Playing for Simenon this year he was surrounded by good talent (Morrow, Williams, and other kid). So he had 3 other Div 1 players around him, but there was reason why ISU and other Power 5 conferences offered. They saw the potential this kid has. His videos show him attacking, spotting up for 3's and also using the step back jumper that marble used a lot. I think the kid is very solid.

I agree Fran needs one more Big I don't care how he gets them, just as long as he gets one. Going into next Season as Woodie as our only true post players worries me. I suppose Baer could step in if needed, but he needs to find someone else.

Can't argue with much of anything you've said. Baer might crack the lineup in a back up role, but I don't see him as a true post player.

This is a bit off the subject, but I've often wondered if Woodbury is not necessarily what McCaffery wants in a post player for his system. I think Woodbury was an important recruit for a lot of reasons, but not necessarily his ideal center. Now don't get me wrong, I think McCaffery appreciates what Woodbury brings to the team in terms of toughness, passing, as well as his defense, but in general it seems like McCaffery could be comfortable not using a "traditional" type of post player. I could see him satisfied with a couple of athletic guys with decent height manning the post region, rather than a traditional 7 footer in the middle.

Not that he wouldn't mind someone 7 feet tall, 250 lbs and runs like a deer, but it may not be his main priority.

I agree with you guys completely. On second thought, I think Wagner will have to step in and play immediately because it looks like we are going after Dale Jones so Wagner will be the only other inside, physical presence on the team besides Woodbury. It's going to be interesting to see who we slide down low on defense when Woodbury comes out. It might have to be Uthoff. I have also heard from several sources that the staff is the most high on Moss because of his offensive abilities. I still think that Hutton is going to play a lot because of his defense. This will be the first time under Fran that we will have a straight up lock-down defender that can take out the other team's best guy and I'm looking forward to it. He's also athletic and can get out and run in transition. I think we could take another step forward next year. We will be very athletic.

The OP hasn't been back for awhile. He was just spouting off crap that he has no way of backing it up and he may be smart enough to know that, maybe. I doubt it.

I dunno. At 6'7", 185lbs, Baer makes Uthoff look buff. Don't see him playing much in the post.

On paper they won't be better but who knows maybe Uhl and some of the freshman step up and produce.

Who thought the Hawks would be better after losing Marble, Basabe and McCabe? I think Iowa lost more that year than they are losing this year. White will be a huge loss, but I think the incoming recruits are better than most think. I love how no one has seen them play in person, but are quick to say they are not going to help our team next year. I loved having Gabe on the team, but the guy was not David Robinson. Gabe played poorly more games than he played well in all honesty. He was not a great defender besides blocking shots and his offense fizzled during the season. The team next year will be similar to the team this year in terms of wins and I am pretty sure they will safely make the tourney (barring serious injuries)

Why do you think the recruits are better than most thing? No one is saying they can't be good but there is also nothing showing they will play above their rating except pure speculation. T

The ratings are pure speculation. A person can get a better idea if a kid will be better or worse than what is already on the team through watching years of basketball and REAL video of games the kid has played.

Takes a little experience and work but there's the truth of it, imo.

Well than. Isn't it all just speculation no matter what? Posters still debate how good a player Aaron White happened to be, don't they?

With a lot of new blood coming in it may take this team a little longer to gel depending on which new guys step up. But there are 4 starters returning. Would be nice to get Jones from Tyler, Texas. He is 6'8 and could take White's spot and spell Woody at the 5.
