When I saw this graphic it occurred to me that the main reason why alcohol isn't illegal in America is because we tried to ban it at a time when we lacked the ability to enforce that ban. I think we'd be able to do a very good job of it today. We actually do a pretty good job of suppressing drugs, when you think about it. Which is impressive when you consider that drugs, by and large, are considerably easier to conceal, ship and store; plus it's pretty easy to detect when someone has used alcohol.

We can't be friends anymore.
You object to legalizing marijuana?

I'm not really suggesting that we return to prohibition (as I'm sure you knew). But I am really suggesting that we could probably succeed at it today if we chose to go down that path.

This is worth mentioning IF you worry that, say, a more religious government controlled by a more religious GOP might reconsider such policies. It seems highly implausible, and yet....

Here's an interesting question: would the prohibition movement be helped or hurt by the legalization of pot?

The pro argument: "You want to get high, use pot; it's legal now and it's safer."

The con argument: "We've rejected allowing recreational use of the much safer drug, pot, so how can we possibly allow the recreational use of the much more dangerous drug, alcohol?"

We would NOT be more successful at prohibition if we did it today. Remember, we have powdered alcohol now.

Of course I knew. I was making a tongue in cheek stand against your position "Let's Outlaw Alcohol Again". I cant cotton that.

Canabis should be legal evwrywhere. More importantly it should be a complete substitute for opiates and other prescribed pain meds

Booze illegal. Good luck.

Can you snort it? Details man, I need details.

Snorting it would not be fun....

Also, there has been talk about it being possible to inhale alcohol in powdered form. That speculation is true. Still, it's not advisable.

"It would take this whole bag to get a buzz off of it," Grush said, pointing to the tapioca bag.

Furthermore, she pointed out, "We know people who tried snorting it, they said it was pretty painful."

I'm less interested now.

I'm struggling to figure out the basis for your claim that we do a pretty good job of suppressing drugs; either qualitatively or quantitatively.

Compare drug use with alcohol use. If we reduced alcohol use to the level of current drug use that would be a huge success. Especially when you consider that you can get a lot higher on small quantities of drugs than you can on a similar amount of beer or booze.

Plus, as already mentioned, the sheer volume (as in space taken up) of alcoholic beverages would make regulation much easier than it is with drugs. So reducing alcohol use to the level of drug use would be much easier - and therefor more effective - than our drug war.

But it would make the world sad. Jesus drank wine. Clearly God wants us drunk. We should all be drinking now. If you need a designated drunk, I got your back.

70% of adultery involves alcohol consumption. If we would simply follow biblical rules we could seriously combat overpopulation by stoning all those adulterers.

I'm doing my part coveting ass and such. If people would just adjust their frame of mind, we could transform adultery into loving thy neighbors.

I know the OP is being facetious but there's no good reason for alcohol to still be legal. It contributes nothing positive to society.

I'd like to see how people would react to caffeine being illegal.

It almost was and only escaped prohibition thanks to the Coca Cola company.

Al Capone and his gang ruled Chicago during Prohibition.
It was the beginning of the rise to power of the Democrats
in the state of Illinois. Today, Illinois is bankrupt and Chicago
is the murder capital of the world. Yeah, Prohibition really
worked.

Here's a different way to look at it. Suppose alcohol was illegal now. Suppose the abolition movement had succeeded and we had now gone several generations with alcohol NOT being a part of our culture.

With that backdrop, suppose someone suggested we legalize it. Based on the pushback against legalizing pot, I don't think there's a snowball's chance in hell that we would legalize booze, given all the serious (and real) problems it is known to cause. Drunk driving, domestic abuse, aggravated assaults, bar fights, sporting event riots, liver damage . . . the list goes on.

It might be a more interesting fight if someone proposed relaxing the law to allow home brewing of beer or wine for private use (no sales). But even that would probably be rejected by a culture that had already done away with alcohol and was adapted to life without it.

Then again, if the rest of the world had mostly done away with alcohol, too, perhaps we would think "it won't be that bad" and the personal liberty argument might win.

Some girls will be ugly forever then. At least now at two AM some look good enough
