Let's talk Hawkeye men's soccer

If it can be shown that B10 soccer attracts TV audiences, it will happen for sure.

St. Louis has a group trying to get a MLS franchise, and they also claim that crowds would be huge due to the sports growing popularity. But they also want a new government-funded stadium, apparently ignoring the TWA Dome debacle.

Soccer will never rival football, basketball or even baseball and wrestling at Iowa. It will do Ok at schools like Stanford, John Hopkins, Pacific, Columbia and the like...but it ain't gonna go over well at Iowa. It will draw like Rowing and Crew do.

Ummmmmmm, the final Top 25 from last season says otherwise, old Soy.. It ain't the '70s anymore, buddy..

Maryland would fall nicely into 16th place right behind St. Cloud State for hockey attendance.

Let's face it, the top hockey schools are a lot of "what else is there better to do in winter?" places. The only interesting cities that time of year are in bold...

North Dakota 21 11408 11,500 99.2
Wisconsin 19 10436 15,237 68.5
Minnesota 19 8726 10,000 87.3
Nebraska-Omaha 18 6118 7,898 77.5
Penn State 19 5906 5,704 103.5
Minnesota-Duluth 20 5811 6,800 85.5
Denver 21 5664 6,026 94
Michigan 19 5399 6,637 81.3
Ohio State 20 5337 17,500 30.5
Michigan State 16 5157 6,470 79.7
Mass.-Lowell 18 4867 6,496 74.9
Boston College 18 4632 7,884 58.8
Notre Dame 21 4604 5,022 91.7
Colorado College 17 4598 7,343 62.6
New Hampshire 18 4422 6,501 68
Maine 18 4078 5,641 72.3
Connecticut 17 4066 9,000 45.2
St. Cloud State 21 4025 5,159 78
Boston University 18 3800 6,300 60.3
Vermont 17 3752 4,003 93.7
Minnesota State 21 3744 5,280 70.9
Cornell 17 3592 4,300 83.5
Michigan Tech 16 3314 4,200 78.9
Yale 17 3210 3,500 91.7
Quinnipiac 1

On top of that, the amount of money needed to maintain a hockey arena FAR exceeds that of some soccer stands and field. Besides, Iowa already has a soccer complex that just might need more seating.

Iowa has a title IX problem with adding soccer as is. HOWEVER, I do not understand why we have a men's gymnastics team when there are NO high school boys gymnastics programs in the state while soccer is now one of the most popular sports by participation. It makes no sense to bring in out of state guys for gymnastics while D-1 soccer talent in our own state has to leave or play at Drake.

This.

Umm, not a lot to do in Iowa during the winter. May want to adjust your talking points because that supports hockey over soccer

This. Scoccer is a boring version of Hockey. Without the ice and toughness.

Hockey NEEDS to happen. Upgrade the club team and pack that new rink in coralville!

I played both at high school in Michigan. Soccer was every bit as tough. I love both sports, but your opinion is based on ignorance.

PS- I also played rugby in HS and college, and that was tougher than either.

As a guy who had to leave the state to play because Iowa didn't have soccer and I didn't want to go to school in the same city I grew up in I really wish U of I had a team.

With that being said i will leave this here.
