LOL....Penn St had OSU beat on the road, had a close loss to OSU at home and has lost several other games by 8 pts or fewer. They were/are a dangerous team backed into a corner and play hard every night. They can defend and they are quick and aggressive. They impacted us greatly on O and yet we came out with a hard fought W and we played some damn good D and rebounded well. Enough of this chicken little shit. Go Hawks! If CJ can give it a go the next 2 games and is as effective as he was tonight we absolutely can beat OSU and or Michigan on the road.

Agree with pretty much everything you're saying, PSU been on the cusp of winning against a lot of quality teams. Talent and coaching are there, they just haven't quite been able to turn the corner. My only complaint was that we got conservative during the last 3 minutes and tried to dribble out the play clock and heave up a shot. I would have rather seen us run through some offensive sets and made a more concerted effort to score vs the clock burning strategy route. A win is a win in the gauntlet that is the BIG schedule. My biggest concern come tournament time is our inability to come up with offensive sets to get shots off when we need them most. Would love to see some sets where we run a shooter between Garza and another guys and close the gap to give the shooter some space, could also allow Garza to seal his man in the lane for a secondary option if there. Easier said than done from behind my keyboard, but just an observation.

Agreed, I knew PSU was dangerous, really glad we got the W and think we have a real shot against Michigan.

My only true concern is out late game guard play against ball pressure. I just think about Indiana's last second shot to beat us, we have no one that can even clear space to get that shot. We can't go into our turtle shell late in games as it can take us 20+ seconds to get a good luck against pressure D. We have 4 non-conf games left and don't seem to be any closer to that answer.

Completely agree. I will go so far as to say PSU played as hard against us as any team we have seen this season.

I like that PSU team. They played hard the whole way. I think they did get tired in the last 10 minutes or so, and their shots started coming up short. Dangerous though, right?
Yeah, and they play kind of a weird style. If they had more depth we may not have won. They were hard to guard.

That summarizes their season. They wear out and miss shots late which covers this game to the T.

PSU played well. They are kind of streaky though which leads to enough inconsistency that as long as the Hawks stayed with their game we would be ok. I liked that they didn’t get rattled when we lost the lead and went down 7 early in the second half. Really good learning experience for Kegan and the other youngsters.

My only hot take is I don't remember a team building and giving up so many leads in recent memory. If this team can just figure out how to bury teams and hold leads, look the f out .

Is this true or just perception. Iowa has already won 8 conference games by DD. 4 all of last year. It seems like we’ve buried teams this more often than we have in the past. Maybe you’re talking about the ebb and flow of the game in progress? That’s basketball.

I can't recall seeing Iowa flip the script on a team defensively like they did PSU. The way the first half ended I was not very confident Iowa would win. PSU's defensive intensity had Iowa reeling and reverting to forcing it to Garza and Garza trying to do too much.

Second half Iowa really cranked up the D and had PSU on their heels offensively. Iowa went from letting PSU get what they wanted offensively to looking completely confused which resulted in rushed / poor shots. Credit Fran for whatever paint he peeled in the locker room at halftime and the players for responding.

The flip side is that I also cannot recall seeing a more jacked up offense in the last whatever it was 4 minutes. That from a veteran team is completely unacceptable. There were 3 possessions at least where the best shot Iowa got was a desperation heave.

Fran has to clean 2 things up this week. 1) Get some new in bounds plays drawn up. 3rd game where Iowa has needed a TO get the ball in and then out of the TO can barely get it in. 2) Get some plays designed for these late game / shot clock situations. Really like to see Murray, CJ, Jbo, Garza, and JW on the floor in these situations.

Hot takes not needed. Penn State played relatively well and with energy and hit their 3s in the first half. Iowa lacked energy and were extremely sloppy in turning over the ball.

We know Iowa's flaws well at this point. Iowa's ceiling is still very high with Final Four aspirations, but we know they can't have multiple of their weak points exposed or else they will lose to the top teams. They can't play poor defense and turn the ball over and win in late March. When Iowa plays up to their potential they are a top 5 team in the country. When their flaws are exposed, they falter more than the other top teams when their flaws are exposed. I think that's fair to say.

PSU is a tough gritty team. That being said we missed 10 ft’s and I counted 5 3 pointers that were halfway down and spun out.
We made this a lot closer game than it needed to be. Good lesson to learn!

2 issues for me. 1. It's so easy for this team to lose a double digit lead, and 2. Those last 3 minutes. I think both issues are related. It's like we relax and expect the other team to do the same.

Iowa stops running their offense. I wish they would just keep attacking.

Remember every Big10 team that Iowa has beaten is absolute garbage according to the experts on this board. Kind of odd for the best conference in the nation.

Sometimes when they do though it leads to opponents scoring very quickly on fast breaks and why we give up big leads as well. Case by case situation literally each game with us.

Shooting much better at the ft line is probably the answer to this problem.

It’s amazing how un-clutch Weiskamp is at the line. Especially if it’s late in the game or the ft’s are important ones.

Garza should be better at the line than he is as well. I don’t like his ft routine. He’s not shooting as good as he probably should anyway so I’m surprised he hasn’t tried something different at the line.

People don't like the stall game but it works. Makes for some white knuckle moments but we burn the clock and the game ends before the opponent can score enough points to overtake the lead. More often then not they foul us and we get free throws.

The end of the game reminded me of Lickball. Run the shot clock down to 2 or 3 seconds and then heave up a prayer. And rarely, if ever, were we ahead at that point during those days.

I agree on a few possessions there at end it wasn't pretty.

Iowa missed (or fumbled away) at least three chippies in the first half, JW had 2 threes that were half way down, Garza (and maybe Frederick) also did i think. If those shots fall, the game might be a total runaway.

Runs happen in basketball... People get mad at Kirk for the 'thats football' comment, but accepting that you can't always control every element (or bounce of the ball) is the right take.

9 TO's by our 2 best players probably will never happen again. I also think now that Luka has broken the record our mindset will change. Face it air balling a FT to break a record was on his mine big time. We beat a tough scrappy Penn St. team and should be happy with it.

100% perception, likely magnified by the lofty expectations of this. And game flow is definitely a part of it.
