Looks like House support for a Ukraine funding bill is a long shot unless Dems get serious about a border bill.

No. A handful of Rs went along with the dems. It was a bad border bill.

It was an Ukraine bill.
They didn’t even bring it up for amendments. The GOP has a razor thin margin in the house. They don’t get to have everything they want. There’s no mandate. They’re ****ing pathetic and not remotely interested in solving problems.

Of course, the Dems are happy to load the gun for them to keep shooting themselves in the foot like this.

I thought it addressed both foreign aid and the border.

Which is what the GOP said was necessary to move forward.

And then they rejected it.

And now they’re back to saying that border security and foreign aid must be linked.

I’m beginning to think the GOP doesn’t want to solve the border issue and simply want to use it as political fodder, Northern.

$60 billion for Ukraine and only $20 billion for the U.S.

Maybe Mike Johnson should have attended the invitation of the Senate to join the negotiations, Northern.

Again: this not a sincere effort by the GOP to address the border. HR2 was a non-starter and the GOP keeps flinging excuses against the wall. Orange Jesus is providing the marching orders and they don’t want to appear to be part of a solution.

Honestly the Speakers hands are tied. Any type of compromise with Dems gets him removed. Yet, his religious fundamentalism requires him to get money to Israel. Dems know this so he’s kinda blocked and encouraged to do nothing.

Why was H.R.2 a "non-starter"?

Why was H.R.2 a "non-starter"?

1) mandated use of E-Verify to check employee documentation - a system that historically “catches” 1 in 6 undocumented workers. Also: does nothing to address industries that are reliant on undocumented labor - i.e. keeping cheaper food in our kitchens.

2) Puts additional burden on CBP offices to determine if an asylum claim has a good chance of being accepted - and dictated that you can only make an asylum claim at a recognized port of entry. Paradoxically, the backup at official ports of entry today would only worsen if that became the new law - forcing more to venture in between official crossings. Like Eagle Pass.

3) Build 900 miles of wall - and waive all legal requirements before building. Ignore environmental review or historic site review. See how well Trump’s “wall” is holding up against the elements today to appreciate how stripping all regulation would go for the long-term success of any wall.

4) ends protection of migrant children.

5) does not address pathways for legal immigration. No funding to expand the capability at legal points of entry (like the Senate version) - the only place where asylum claims could be made under HR2. So you restrict where asylum claims can be made, but don’t provide the infrastructure to help CBP.

Number 3 would be the killer in my mind. Build a wall. But if the Wall has a bunch of nonfunctional areas no biggie. That’s a flipping joke. Still say the best place for a Wall is the Southern Mexico border.

Dem Translation: "Legalize!"

Write a border bill that doesn't include things not related to our border security and it will be brought to the floor and pass.

The parts about the border are complete garbage. The money is mostly to speed up processing rather than actually securing the border. We can absolutely simplify processing of people that legally want to come to our country but if the funding doesn't first secure the border all it is from Biden is another lie.

Set up a bill for Ukraine and Israel independent of the border

1 and 3 should be alarming to u. The biggest driver of migrants is jobs. If u take away that carrot numbers fall.
And if we are going to pour billions into a Wall. Shouldn’t we make sure it’s feasible and actually stays up.
