Luther Open Preview (Which TFR will be in the Open Division?)

Good to see that Murin, Warner, and Costello will be wrestling in the open division. Stickley is a true freshman as well, isn't he? He isn't listed as one of the true freshman wrestling in the open division, but I would hope is wrestling in the open division. Clarification?

Please, God, don't let Iowa enter anyone in the freshman division of this already remedial middle-school tournament. It's the equivalent of "everyone gets a trophy" and it's not what Iowa Wrestling is about.

Wouldn't quite go that far. Often the "freshman division" type level of these tournaments have far more wrestlers in them. Would you rather have a developmental guy like Connor Corbin wrestle 5-6 matches or 2-3 against what might only be slightly better competition?

He is our starting 125 through at least December unless I missed something in the last few hours.
If Lee is going to wrestle after Midlands and I believe he will. Why waste a yr of JStick eligibility? Let Perez go til midlands and have JStick RS and build his body into a full size 133 for next yr. We won't have are best team on the mat til after Midlands anyway so who cares what happens before then? Every match, dual, and tournament is important but March is all that matters.

I guess I disagree with not letting Stick wrestle. He was not a top 10 PFP type guy and there is certainly no guarantee he will ever hit the starting lineup (much less 4 straight years). And even if he would start next year at 133, a future top 10 PFP 133 stud may come to Iowa and beat him out in future years. Not to mention possible injury. Not to mention that Lee may not go this year. Any experience he can get under the big lights will help him out this year if Lee doesn't go and when competing for 133 next year and in the future (even if it isn't outstanding competition the first quarter/half of the year).

The only reason NOT to start him this year is if you are pretty sure he is the future of 133 for the 4 next years. I don't think that is the case.

Like edquinn said, it would make zero sense to wrestle Stickley if we are going to #FreeTheLee. Why burn two redshirts for a few meaningless duals?

There is a good chance Stickley won't start all 4 years especially with everyone wanting us to recruit a 133 lb guy and he might already have graduated and looking to move on in life. Might has well let him represent the Hawks when he can.

I like you. You have a good head on your shoulders. ;)

Wrong, keep the RS on Stick til Midlands. If Lee doesn't go then pull it. Who cares about 5 duals before then. We missed out this year on 133. The next class doesn't really have anyone available. Staff probably won't go for it again til 2020. One of Murin, Happel, Glynn, & Stick will be are starter for the following two years. Much better to RS Stick if Lee goes this year.

I guess I understand that point of view as well and it is up to the kid ultimately. It just seems like it would be out of character for Brands to pull the redshirt on two different kids at the same weight class after only doing it 1 time total previously.

It seems more like a move KJ would have made in his time at ISU. Guess we will find out a week from today.

Stickley was here last year and is a year removed from HS - so not really a TRUE true freshman.

I am also in the camp that believes it may take a full year to completely heal up from an ACL repair and going full out before that increases your risk for reinjury (e.g. Snyder and Stoll). You may feel great and your knee may be back to baseline by metrics, but that doesn't mean that your risk for reinjury isn't greater. I hope Spencer redshirts. No use rolling the reinjury dice on such a talented kid, even if the odds seem in your favor.

I can see both sides, but the only fact is that Stickley didn't cut down to 125 to wrestle some opens and redshirt. JS wants to go. He knows Spencer will likely wrestle if he comes out of Midlands healthy. There are no guarantees to be in the lineup the next 4 years. The good thing is he will have an opportunity to show our 133 problem is solved when he wrestles Suriano.

Also if Stickley is performing and manning the spot then there would be no reason to pull Lee's redshirt. The only reason to pull the shirt is if 125 is a black hole. Healing time is only going to benefit Spencer.

Hasn't it been 11 months since Lee has had surgery??

Dagboi whats with the avatar? Just curious

Well, since you asked...... :)

It obviously captures the moment right after Lee “lost” to DeSanto when going for his 4X state title and an undefeated HS career. Fighting on one leg, mono wore him out, he still wanted to go for it and push himself to a new height of achievement. You could even argue that the 2 was after the whistle, and I wouldn’t look at you sideways.

To me, this photo captures an inflection point for our program—the precise moment in time that our current lull of misfortune turns around. This is Lee’s Larry Owings moment—the burning seed of resentment that grew in Gable’s heart until it burst out in full bloom as he blew through the ‘72 Olympics and no one scored even a point on him. You don’t have the greatest tournament run in wrestling history without the sting of that final NCAA loss.

So Lee has a stinger in his soul now, too. That final last loss that he couldn’t quite (and no one could or should, let’s be clear) pull off. But he is savvy enough and driven enough to use it to fuel an incredible run through his NCAA career, and we’re all along for the ride. He doesn’t ever want to feel that way again.

So as terrible a moment and as bitter a defeat as it was for Spencer, and we mourn it right along with him, I think it was quite possibly the greatest thing that could have happened to the Hawks in a long while. So I celebrate it as the catalyst for our next title.

Go Hawks. FREE THE LEE.

Any pbp or Twitter?
trackwrestling.com is showing 17 in Elite Div and 3 in Silver.
Any High Schoolers there? Track does show 2 unattached IA, but that could be anybody in Ia school systems.

High school kids are not allowed in college opens in Iowa. Unattached could be Downey and ?

It seems as though track ALWAYS lists an unattached iowa as participating. I wouldn't look into that at all.

Downey is supposed to be at GV but he has a way of not showing up or only wrestling a match or two before “injury defaulting” at these things.

Really? That's weird; any other states doing that too?
There was something posted in Twitter and here I believe about Iowa code not allowing it. It was around the time of Gable wrestling in the collegiate tourney last week.

Is that a rule for Iowa high schools? Or are you saying even hs kids from other states can't come into Iowa to compete at opens?

I know in Illinois during the hs season hs kids can't compete outside of NHSCA sanctioned high school events. Season started this past Monday so last weekend was the only window for college opens for them. I would assume that is the case in most states so I wouldn't expect to see many if any hs kids at opens in areas of the country that the hs season has started.

Hager said he was going, Downey said it was fake news, said depends on where he is at with course work. Downey said no yesterday, when asked on Twitter. Not put off by the reasoning of making sure he gets his degree so he can wrestle for us next semester.

I am no expert on this, just repeating what i read when the question of Teske entering an open was raised.

20+ credits in a semester is no small feet even if you are doing them through the Web.

Just the time alone has to be daunting. I did 18 credits twice and was miserable from the amount work.

He wrestled last week and looked decent.

Priorities are straight on this one. Good on him.

Small shoes.
