Mabin still a liability

With a better QB Lazzard would've had 200 yards. It was obvious they were targeting Mabin. This is a real concern, a better team will eat him alive.

Mabin's biggest issue is playing the ball.

He seems to panic or get lost when it's time to make the play on the ball. Thus, he gives up receptions or interference calls when he is in decent position to make the play.

Improvement in that category would go a long way for him.

Every sack on Saturday was a coverage sack. I thought Mabin was very good on Saturday.

Mabin is in decent position most of the time - All he has to do is turn around and he would have more pass break ups and ints. And people would be raving about him instead of King.

I will bet you Mabin is in a NFL camp

Yes. He does. You are correct sir.
Not only is he correct, but that is a BIG problem as of late. He's constantly getting scorched because of it and is often way too soft on coverage.

The stats aren't lying, he's getting toasted and there is NO debate. Anyone who would argue that is a delusional hack. I love this team and I agree that when Mabin is on, he's very good. He hasn't been close to good these first two games. Period. The stats support what the OP is saying and again, it's not a debate.

Case closed until improvement is proven. Deal with it, you're wrong, OP is right for now.

It's more than that actually, he's slow to make the adjustment when the player makes a move on him. He's not turning his head, because he's too far from the receiver to do so and not lose track of him.

Not sure I can add much. I think Mabin is a solid corner. Certainly not a 'Jim Thorpe' winner caliber, but honestly how many are from year to year?

He struggled a bit against Miami (OH), in my opinion. Against Iowa State I think he did a bit better against an excellent receiver.

I'm no football guru by any means but a quick scan at the 'play-by-play' recap of the game, it looks like Lazzard was 'targeted' 17 times and caught 7 for 111 yards. Mabin was called for a face mask penalty, and 2 of Lazzard's catches (for 32 yards total) were brought back because of ISU penalties. That means there were 7 other passes that were incomplete. How many were because of poor throws, good defense by Mabin, good defense 'otherwise' ... I don't know. But, I don't think based on the available data that one can conclude that Mabin is a liability, or getting 'burned' regularly.

Mabin played a very solid game on Saturday. Several times the back seven had everyone covered up and caused a sack or throw away. Amazing how we can give up 3 points and we have posters bashing on our guys. Pretty sure Coack Parker knows who gives us the best chance to win.

The one where Lazzard constantly abused him for over 100 yards. Plus last weeks pitch and catch fest that Mabin was involved in. As well as most of last year.
I'm not sure you grasp this (I'll type slow) 1) Lazard can have his dink and dunk for 100 yards - who gives a shit. 2) the "Iowa" defense has been giving the 5 to 7 quick pass for a couple of decades now. They keep everything in front of them and it seems to work out even if that is frustrating. 3) that Miami quarterback was good - real good. 4) King. 5) the safeties did not seem to be on the same page last week but I doubt many Mabin bashers can follow that logic. 6) don't take this personal;)

I'm sorry but I see no reason for this poster to catch flack for stating the obvious. This young man is the week link in our secondary and will get picked on. Just how week he is can be debated. In my humble opinion he will not play on Sunday. He may be the greatest person in the world but he does have trouble getting his body turned to defend.

To your statement, I would say about seven days worth of week....

But, no, Mabin is not a liability. He is a Hawk who gives great effort 100% of the time. Too bad that all of our 'experts' can only see the bad in some, but that has been the rule rather than the exception for certain posters on here.

Carry on.

Reading shit like this gets real fukin' old.

I'm guessing those of you criticizing Mabin have never played a meaningful football game in your lives. Mabin played outstanding football Saturday. Mabin has also committed himself to this team and has worked his ass off to be a significant part of a team that still hasn't lost a regular season football game in two years.

Show some god(bleepin) respect and STFU!

No one has said he doesn't work his ass off or we have anyone that could do any better. What were saying is this young man (( no matter how great of a person he is )) is the week spot in our defensive backfield. Sorry but yes I have played and coached football but this doesn't make me as good as KF and his staff.

Once is funny.... more than once is lunacy.

(The word you are looking for is weak, not week.)

As the expert you are with experience both playing and coaching, I would recommend you go back and watch some game film of Iowa. One game you might benefit from would be the Iowa game at Wisconsin last October. Focus on the defensive effort and the contributions from this player you have singled out to be this year's whipping boy.

It was a known quantity from the very moment that Des announced he would be returning for his senior year - teams would scheme to avoid him as much as possible. It has also been discussed now ad nauseam how Mabin is the fault of this and that in these two early games this season. The informed and objective posters have stated/admitted that Bahl was a better QB than first given credit for being able to throw the back shoulder ball to his receiver on several occasions.

Greg Mabin's contributions to Iowa's success far outweigh his "liabilities". Some on here simply cannot stand the prosperity of the moment and thus have to find a scapegoat to bitch about.

also you should notice, that person said "were"... meaning "we're"....
I assume he is a spokesman for a group of people...
obviously he is implying that he is speaking for other people as well as himself.
perhaps he is a part of an organization that seeks to bring down Greg Mabin?

I don't get these so called spokesman...

well.... what me and my people are saying is that we gave up 3 points on Saturday.... no touchdowns... we've won 14 straight games..

we believe Greg Mabin is an outstanding football player.... we're convinced of it.

People have no idea what they are talking about if they think Mabin is a liability in the defensive backfield.

From what I see it seems to me that Mabin has had decent coverage, but I would agree that he needs to turn his head when the ball is in the air. I thought his coverage against Miami was good but without seeing the ball couldn't make a play. As far as Lazard, he's a good receiver and is going to make his share of plays. But for as bad as several people think Mabin played, the Hawks only gave up 3 points.

It's comforting to know you recognized the difference between week & weak. Now work on football.

It's obvious? No it's not obvious. Mabin played very well the other night. I re-watched the entire game and he made several good plays in coverage and run support, including a big 3rd down stop on Lanning. He's not the "week" link in the secondary at all in pass coverage. That would be Taylor, who is a big hitter, but gets out of position occasionally on coverage.

People tend to build up a bias and then see what they want to see. They act like every ball Lazard caught was poor coverage on Mabin. Simply not true. Every CB, including King gets beat on coverage once in a while. So yes, in my book the OP doesn't know what he's talking about.

I'll add that the mere fact that you have no more 'expertise' to try to share on this subject speaks volumes. Or, in you case, go ahead and read it "speeks".
