Maishe Dailey

I like this guy's game. He seems to have a little of everything to his game. I wouldn't say he excels at any one thing. But he can handle the ball, has a decent shot, can drive & dish, plays good defense and seems to have a good basketball IQ.

He is a guard so he doesn't necessarily need the bulk, many his isn't banging down low. But you don't need to be huge to be successful. Ask Baer.

Anyone else seeing a player in Maishe? I would like to see more of Dailey. And if CW can't put things together, then take his minutes. I can see Maishe running the point for sure. He just needs some more PT.
What is his wingspan? He reminds me of Nate Thurmond lol.

Daily could easily pass Williams and Ellingson by next year, possibly even this year. Ellingson is never going to be a big minutes guy anyway.

Also Bohanon cannot continue to play so many minutes. Hes not an ideal full time point and I have a feeling hes going to have a tough time as the primary ball handler this year in conference.

Everyone talks about the kids playing too many minutes. I live in Phoenix and we have Grand Canyon University (Majerle as coach). The point guard is a senior and is 5'11 and 155#. He is AVERAGING 38 minutes a game thru 11 games. They played a game last week where they only had 7 guys due to 5 injuries. And they won. By the way, this is their 4th and last year in Div. I probationary (not sure that is what it is called) period as they were previously Div II or whatever it is. So they are not patsies. OH, and lost at Arizona by something like 10 pts and to Duke by 9-10. So 18-22 year old kids can play a LOT of minutes. (Maybe not guys like Pemsl who weigh >245)

Theres a difference between senior and freshman in how many minutes you can expect them to handle.

Physically, and with a lot of TV timeouts, you are probably right. Most collegiate players could probably handle that workload. However, when you are mistake-prone, as most freshmen are (JoBo included), breaks are often necessary for in-game coaching. As a senior, my guess would be that, for the most part, you pretty much know when you've messed up and what needs to be improved throughout a game.

In other words, while you are right in that Bohannon could probably handle 30-35 mpg physically, he probably couldn't mentally... and mental "freshness" down the stretch in Big Ten games, when we need to be breaking presses and making free throws, is crucial.

People shouldn't give up on CW though. The "sophomore slump" has been a pretty common occurrence at Iowa for whatever reason, and I expect him to continue to improve as the year goes on, just as I expect Dailey to. What I'd like to see is competition in the form of the two receiving nearly identical minutes and basically playing for the job of backup PG. Both have the potential to play at wing, and the "loser" can start mastering the 2/3 for when Jok leaves. Moss will play the two, and I believe Baer should primarily play the 4, which hopefully means there will be wing minutes available next year.

I like his game but I feel he really should have redshirted but he told Fran no. The thing is Fran misses on id say 50-60 percent of recruits which is good for a non blue blood. But this year I don't think he missed on a single freshman which amazes me.

Also with the 4 stars coming the next few years Iowa basketball with be very fun to watch again like when I was a kid started watching in 88 I was 4. But it seemed once Davis was told to leave it just hasn't been fun and I haven't went to as many games.

Back on the subject I really hope Dailey stays I think he has a bright future but when you got 10 I think freshman and sophomores a few have to sit.

That's why for years I was always hoping Fran could fix the scholarship distribution and now we are feeling the effects of it. But with 3 freshman coming in next year I'm assuming Connor redshirt sand jones is gone just my opinion, that will help fix the scholarship issue.

I really enjoy watching these young guys improve each game they aren't scared for freshman and have a toughness that past Iowa teams didn't have. You can't push these guys around.

Next test Purdue I feel Purdue and Indiana will be our toughest tests this year with the size.

Go Hawks!

When I watched MD the last game.... I thought his D was pretty good and he was giving huge effort. IMO he should play as much or more than CW. Again, I'm not at practices either so Fran will get it figured out.

Huh? Player retention and development is EVERYTHING for our program. We aren't and never will be Kentucky. Wisconsin has made gold out of redshirting underdeveloped players. We should do the same.

Uthoff redshirted at Wisconsin and he ended up at Iowa.

As has been mentioned, if the player is willing to redshirt, then good idea if the player needs development. Since MD chose not to, no big deal. Fran should work on retaining the guys he does want to keep in program. Forcing a RS on a guy you like that doesn't want to RS is not conducive to player retention.

I like Dailey's future and so does Fran.

“He's got a versatility about him that's impressive, because he can laterally get his feet apart and move his feet and contain a really smaller, quicker guy,” McCaffery said. “But then he's (6-foot-6) and long and so he can stick his nose in there on the glass and get rebounds with bigger guys and he can make 3s. Eventually, as he gets stronger, he's going to be even more explosive. What I want to see him do now is just kind of just take it and go off the dribble, trust his ability to do that.”

Thanks for sharing. I hadn't read that one. Fran basically wants him to cut loose, and do what he can. He must definitely trust the guy.

If Maishe can start hitting those 3s consistently, like JBo mentioned he is capable of doing, then his inside dribble drive game will take off. He could become a huge asset rather quickly. Looking forward to seeing that!

When watching him this summer, Maishe obviously had a good stroke, passing game, and handle. He'd make drives but shy away when he didn't think he could physically finish. That's actually encouraging to me, because it shows he's aware of what he can and cannot do, similar in a way to Pemsl's knowing his strengths. As he gets stronger, I can easily see MD making a more successful driving game.
