Making the Dance isn't easy

It just struck me, making the tourney in basketball is essentially the equivalent of being rated in the top 25 at the end of the year in football.

25/130 d1 football programs = top 19.23%
68/352 d1 basketball programs = top 19.3%

Discuss…

Has the Big ten ever had 8 top 25 football teams to end the year?

if my recollection is accurate, before the season began, the consensus (including pretty much most of the knowledgable bb posters) seemed to be that this was not a tourney worthy team. so in that context, i suppose we should be pleased that they made it. let's hope they can pull out one or two and become one of the more remembered teams despite the "mediocrity"

Even harder in basketball because many of the teams that make the tourney aren't in the top 19.3% of teams in the country. They're automatic qualifiers. If you make it as an at large, you're in what? Top 15%?

There are 32 automatic bids. Out of those 32 conferences there is about 8 conferences that really stand a chance to get more than 2 teams in. You can throw out about 10 teams in 24 conferences because they don't have a chance. Thats 240 teams. So you are really only competing against 110 or so schools.

Given that the B10 gets 6-8 teams in bowls each year and about 6-8 teams in the NCAA tourney each year, I see it more like making it to a bowl. Penn State made it into the tourney with a 10-10 big ten record.

Excellent point. Plus you get the automatic bids that may give some pretty poor teams a chance in the tournament. I've seen teams with 500 records get in so the number to get in is even smaller. I love this time of year even if Iowa wasn't playing but it makes it so much more fun when they are. I still think even a team like we have this year can go on a run. Can't believe UNC declining the nit. Giving the younger players more practice time and experience especially in a tournament setting has to be a positive.

If you were to add in the NIT with the NCAA Tournament, that would be the equivalent of making a bowl game. In no way is the NCAA Tournament alone like making a bowl game.

Bowl games mostly require a .500 record to be eligible and even that is not a requirement anymore.

As for Penn St, they certainly got hot at the right time. Made the BTT Championship and won eight of their last 10. They likely took Rutgers place who also finished 10-10 and had a better NET than N’western and PSU (one spot behind Iowa).

So much parity in college basketball, any team can beat anyone. We could either be a one and done or go to the elite 8. There isn't a team we can't beat. So I like our chances. We're due.

If we beat Auburn, which is a big IF, we have zero chance vs Houston. It'll be like the Oregon game, we simply don't have the athletes to match theirs.

Iowa pulled off a miracle with the three comebacks vs Indiana, Michigan, and Michigan St; lose two of those and we'd be playing tonight at Carver in the NIT. We are barely a tournament caliber team.

It is what it is.

But we're in the tournament. We're dancing. Celebrate and hope for the best.

I heard we had zero chance against Indiana twice. Also Rutgers and Iowa State. There are very few teams in the tournament that have zero chance except for a couple of the teams that lucked in by the tournament. Even Drake is a solid team. Plus I'd rather play Houston than Alabama.

Enjoy the off-season. Great game tonight. 13 years and no Sweet 16 for Fran yet again.
lol Dude…

The trend is not your friend. I hope you enjoyed the last decade because it’s gone and unlikely to return for a long while.

Eeeeck, bad look and this is embarrassing for you. I'm not entirely sure you'd even be aware as to why either. That's the sad part.

Yea I mean 2 B1G titles in last 4 years is still more than Iowa in the last 52 years. I’m really worried.

Noticeable no-shows

Michigan
North Carolina
Wisconsin

These are programs that have had numerous final four appearances yet they didn't make the field this year. It is not easy so congrats for getting there hawks. Hope we can do something but not holding my breath.
What's the point in making the dance...if you can't dance?

Would you change their ncaa past for ours?

The trend is little talent and not getting invited to the tourney. What does Gard have coming in to reverse the trend?

Yeah. ... I thought so.

lol

If you lose in 1st round of ncaa tourney, you are more accurately described as falling in 33-64 ranking range, because that is what your record says you are.

The athletic budgets for P5 schools put them at distinct advantage when it comes
to spending on coaches/facilities/amenities/prestige. Iowa peers should be other P5 schools and other B1G teams.

Getting to the NCAA tourney 68 teams out of 352 seems like quite the accomplishment unless you look under the hood. The B1G with 14 teams is averaging 8 NCAA bids the last few years? So that really is 8/14 chance in the Iowa peer group.

ISU is also a close peer comparision.
