Malik Williams visit

We will have room. There will be a player leaving after this year from the freshmen class.
We got a lot of guys fighting for playing time. The two that our red shirting this year are both really
good players and will be in the mix for playing time next year.
So... you're saying Fleming is leaving?

Dales Jones is the odd man out in this scenario. We are doing just fine or maybe better w/o him. I think baer deserves a scholly at some point. I could see Dale and one freshman leave (Fleming). Connor walking on for just one year should at least be considered

I think it's pointless and destructive to speculate on anyone leaving. Everyone seems happy now with bright possibilities in front of them. That might change next year when it becomes clearer as to how minutes and development take shape. But it looks like anyone leaving will do so on good terms- an odd thing these days.

As to Dale Jones, I'd been wondering about him too. Apparently, Fran said in an interview (quoted by Hooper) recently that Dale Jones' knee is in as good a shape as it's ever been. That's good news because guys his size who can shoot like he can are rarer than you might think from watching the Hawks these days.

Finally, as to Conor's scholly, that is a recruiting ace in the hole, but it's doubtful Fran would need to use it. By the time 2017 rolls around, the numbers will take care of themselves. And if Conor is the only 2017 recruit? Then we will have large senior classes on the horizon. That's worked out pretty well this year. Soo, it's a win-win.

I was under the assumption that Dale Jones hurt his knee again and that's why he hasn't been playing. Is that not the case?

No, he did hurt it. He had surgery around the 2nd week of Dec, which would mean 5-6 weeks post surgery now. I have heard no updates, but given what I saw from my son's knee surgeries, it wouldn't surprise me if his rehab is going well that Fran would mention his knee being structurally fine now and just trying to strengthen and get range of motion back.

That doesn't mean he would be able to try to play this year, it takes a long time to catch it back up to where it was before the injury, just that there would be hope he could be back next year. Also keep in mind, even if he were to play in the PTL, it's likely he may not be back to full speed/strength even one year post surgery. We would likely notice a bit limited speed, jumping, explosiveness next season from him. If he's given a 6th year, that year would probably be as close as possible to what he could be.

If Jones might play this year, I would wonder why they were talking about getting him a 6th year. I'm not saying he won't play this year, but IMHO it's getting too late for that.

Dale Jones tore his ACL, he's not playing this year. It might not have been his ACL, don't ever remember seeing something definite, but he's not playing this season

Yeah, he's done for the season. Even if he were to finish rehab on his knee before the end of the season (which I'd think isn't all that likely), there's no way he'd have time to have his body, much less his knee, ready to go this year. There's a massive difference between his knee being fixed and structurally sound and he and his knee being in shape enough to even play 5 min per game.

One of the assistant coaches recently spoke to a group of Hawkeye fans and said that A) Jones would not play any more this year and B) and most encouraging is that Jones told coaches and trainers that right after surgery his knee felt stronger than it did at the same time of his previous knee surgery.

Agree, why would any confident player leave in this off season. We are losing four seniors that collectively average a ton of minutes especially in big and close games. Also, some guys understand they are probably going to be back ups and role players. Every player knows there's only going to be so much time for everyone. Competing for that time makes the whole team better.

The good news is the cupboard will not be Baer.

Since MSU and PD have been considered top options for Williams, and we swept them both, Iowa has to be looking rather attractive to him. Add to that, Iowa's star is a player to whose game I could easily see Williams aspiring. Plus, Fran is a high COY candidate who has shown a strong preference for using long lean players like Williams (White, JU, Uhl...). These considerations would seem to indicate that Iowa might have a decent shot at him.

I agree. I think we have a decent shot at M.Williams. Would be a HUGE get, and a welcome addition to the Hawkeye family. I've read Indiana has been at the top of his list....then also mentioned were Iowa, MSU, Purdue, Illinois and Butler.

Malik could be still gaining some coordination but definitely has some skills like passing and shooting that I like. Cant jump worth a lick, though.

I believe Connor will redshirt his first year as he really need to gain some muscling to endure the Big Ten battles. He is not Kingsbury (broad shouldered type). I do not question his shooting touch or ball handling skills but he will be playing against physical types every game. Most freshman do little their first year unless they are one and done types and those kids are usually very big and mature for their age.

Sounds like Iowa moved into the top few for Williams according to HN post. He got to visit with Cook and his family this past weekend as well as the coaches and players.

I would be very very surprised if Connor redshirts

Those aren't his highlights are they? There seemed to only be a few plays of what appearedto be him. That was strange
I think those are highlights of him and a teammate from a single game recently. Those would actually be really good if they did come from a single game.

FWIW, Coach McCaffery said on his radio show that the recruits that attended the Purdue game all had a great time.

Williams and Cook would sure make a nice set of bookend forwards, or a 4 and 5 in a smaller lineup. I don't see anything that would make me believe that someone will leave after this year, with four spots opening up for playing time, but I do think that at least one wing will be disappointed with playing time after next year and leave. Williams would sure look good in a Hawkeye uniform, and we would be keeping him off some of the teams that are our biggest competitors.

Williams/Cook at 5/4 would not be a smaller lineup. They would be the most highly rated 5/4 pair we've recruited since Stokes/Payne.

The rest I agree with. However, I'm not sure how 6'11 and 6'9 would be considered smaller. Even if neither are a true 5, that's some pretty good height and length to put in the middle of a defense.

You don't redshirt a top 100 recruit, like Conner.

Jones looked very good this year coming in as the 6th man, even with a bum knee. My guess is that his first surgery was botched and the Y of Iowa doctors will do a better job. I'm very excited to think about what he'll bring in 3 point shooting and rebounding. And we are going to need his maturity.

Cook is shorter, but more of an interior player with some meat on his bones. Williams could probably play 3, 4 or stretch 5. He probably would need to get stronger to play center. You want a brut lineup, put Kriener at center, Cook at the 4, and Williams at the 3.

Regardless of what position they play, Cook and Williams would be an awesome combination.

Regarding Jones, your '.guess' would fit the current scenario and explain why we haven't heard what the specific injury is. That said, it is speculation.

Huh?? Pretty dumb comment.
Not all players are going to be happy in that role. Never said he wouldn't but that doesn't mean he won't look around to find a spot where he doesn't have to compete with so many guys at the 3/4 position like baer uhl pemsl cook moss wagner. Team hasn't missed a beat w/o him and he is going to be slowed by his injury when he comes back

Always tough to pull kids out of Indiana but sounds like the young man really enjoyed his visit. Good that he and his Mom spent time with the Cook family. Quite a commitment of time to drive from Bloomington on Saturday for a Sunday game.

There is some really good basketball played in Ft. Wayne so he is competing against really good talent.

I don't think anyone is leaving after this year cause there is a ton of playing time up for grabs next year. I mean we lose 4 starters and the only guy we know for to pencil in as a starter is Jok. After next year who knows, roles will be more defined and we will have guys that will be here for 2-3 more years.

I predict this is our starting 5 to start the year next year.

Pg- Williams, the only one with some playing experience at the point.
SG- Jok, nuff said.
SF-Baer, I think he will put on some more mass and be a very solid player for us.
PF-UHL, will be just like Utoff, not as good, but a guy that can stretch the floor and play inside.
C-Cook, I just think he will bring more of an offensive threat than Wagner

I think when it comes to the bench we will see almost full line changes next year, Fran will see how everyone does in the game and go from there for the first 10 games or so.

The line-up for the year after that could be really special if Malik Williams joins us.

PG- I. Williams
SG- Flemming/Ellingson
SF-Uhl
PF-Cook
C-M. Williams.
