Man up and make a call on the MSU game

I love and believe in my Hawks but I think we get pounded tonight. So much is against us: 1). At MSU. 2). Valentine back. 3). Spartan payback for only loss 4). 9 day layoff.

MSU 80 Hawks 60.

This comes close to my prediction as well. The only not factored above is the "Izzo factor with the guys in stripped shirts". Call it a whine, but there is no denying it exists and very clearly in games against Iowa. Izzo tried very hard to get them in his hip pocket in Iowa City, but it did not work.

Besides, the conference would have egg on its face if MSU lost again this early in the conference so Teddy V or one of his cronies will be in play tonight.

We will be very competitive and play them close or even have the upper hand for 25-30 minutes of the game, but there will be a very bad 10 minutes that they just dominate and we lose by 14.

I have mixed feeling about this one. I think people are playing up the Izzo/ref thing a little bit too much. Yes, they get more calls at home. Most teams do. This is a senior laden team that isn't going to let the officials get in their way. If they lose it will be because MSU was the better team tonight. I expect a high scoring affair and lots of back and forth. My biggest concern is coming out a little sluggish after the long break. Having said all that I'm going Iowa 83 Sparty 79 in OT. Uthoff scores 30

I want the hawks to win so bad, but MSU is MSU. They are very tough at home and you have to catch them on an off night to beat them. I think the hawks will hang with them, but MSU's shooting will be too tough to overcome.

Apparently I'm not the only person on earth who dislikes the idea that Ted Valentine might officiate this game, he's been banned for the last two years!

Guess we might have to wonder if someone who knows one heck of a lot more about basketball than you or I (Of course I doubt you'd ever admit it.) wanted Valentine as far way from Iowa basketball as possible. Sure seems like someone kept Valentine away for as long as possible.

They HATE Valentine (and they hated Hightower), claiming Ted goes out of his way to screw MSU every chance he gets. BTW, I've hated Ted Valentine for years, but not because I think he intentionally screws Iowa, but because he's one of the worst officials in college basketball. He's terrible at his job.

Don't you feel a little embarrassed now, whining about the officiating, after watching the game? If anything the officiating was pro Iowa. Woody literally tackled one of their players on a rebound and no foul called.

To me, it's not a make or break game. Way too much season to still play.

Winning the game clears some hurdles (the losing streak at Breslin) but doesn't pave the way for future success. Losing the game should be expected, as MSU is fantastic at home, regardless the competition.

This is all just general blather that most everyone knows. So the question is: do we get our asses handed to us by 20 plus, or do we keep it close with the possibiltiy to win down the stretch? I won't factor in the Hawks winning by 20 because that makes my brain drunk with unreal possibilities.

Anxious to hear thoughts, criticisms and other possible outcomes.

Now, there's no reason to allow your notable hatred for DanL to spread to other posters just because they stand up for me. IronFist made a very good point, quite a few people believe that when a team goes into the Breslin center there is a good chance they'll be battling not only Izzo and the Spartans, but homer refs as well. I would hazard a guess that the feeling goes well beyond just many in the Hawkeye fan base, to fans of just about every other Big Ten school besides Michigan State.

Are you now claiming that all the fans who think Izzo enjoys a strong, strong home court advantage including homer refs are idiots?

I thought we would lose by 15 given our history at MSU (lost 18 straight), what was on the line for them, Valentine back, etc. Heck even at half time I thought we might lose. Felt this way until the 4 minute mark. All of this was despite that I think we a good team. MSU is a tough program to beat especially up there. Great job Fran and company.

That's just it, many of us posters were anticipating a screw job by the refs against MSU and NONE of us are idiots for it. Why? Because we've seen it before. Now why can't you just grow up instead of being an Ahole? We're watching some of the best Iowa hoops in years and all you can do is act like a jackass.
