Mariah Carey? Good God, she's not even an artist - just a killer voice in a hot bod.
She defines record company creation.

Hall either needs to whittle down the list to 2 or 3 noms every year or induct every 3-5 years or something - it's obvious they're running out of rock talent to recognize.

I don't get why Phish would be inducted. Have they ever had a commercially successful/popular song? What percentage of people do you think could name a single Phish song? They're a jam band popular with hippies.

Phish is probably top 30 all-time concert tickets sold. They are certainly worthy of inclusion in the HOF.
I get that they sell a lot of concert tickets. They have a dedicated group of fans that will follow them around to watch them live. I'm sure it's a terrific show, and a great place to meet women who smell like patchouli oil.

I'm asking about their broader appeal within the music (rock & roll) world. Outside of those dedicated fans that love seeing them live, has anyone else ever heard of a song of theirs? I'm not a Mariah Carey fan, but I've at least heard of some of her songs. I'm fairly certain I've never heard a Phish song - and I don't think most people have.

I guess I'm not sure of the bar to get in. To me for a lot of these it's the Hall Of Pretty Good. But baseball has turned into that as well I guess.

Oasis is a joke
It’s ridiculous that Cyndi Lauper is not in while Mary J Blige is
Do the Black Crowes have the resume? Don’t think so
Bad Company-about time
Joy Division/New Order should be a no brainer
I’m for Billy Idol, but would get why some might not be
If Janet Jackson is in, hard to argue with Mariah. She has an insane amount of songs to hit number one
Wouldn’t argue against OutKast
Phish should probably be in at some point
Same with White Stripes. Just don’t think on first ballot
I would buy Chris Cornell as a better candidate than SoundGarden. Add in solo, Audioslave and Temple of Dog, no brainer

Still hope Smashing Pumpkins get nominated someday. Gish, Siamese Dream, Mellon Collie, Adore and Machina should be enough. Nothing post 2000 did it for me. Would obviously have better chance if Billy hadn’t rubbed so many people wrong over the years

Oasis is not R&R HOF material. Ego doesn’t count

They are really good at what they do. Being commercially popular isn't a requirement to get into the Hall, although Phish does pretty well. To say they haven't had an impact on music culture in the United States would not be an accurate statement. Granted, Grateful Dead did it first, but they had a unique sound and last I checked they were still touring.

Just because it says "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" doesn't mean it is only for Rock and Roll. But that sounds better than "Music Hall of Fame".

Many great rockers share your sentiment
Part of the problem is in their effort to include all genres of music they don't include all genres of music. Heavy metal being very notably underrepresented, although Ozzy Osbourne did finally get in this year. Part of the problem with being anti-establishment and f**k the power is they don't get enough people on the committees that decide these sorts of things.

Rock and roll is not all about **** the power. That’s punk. R&R takes many forms…love songs, self exploration, celebration, story telling, existential struggle, jams with no deep message and yes sometimes anger. That said the Hall of Fame is definitely more an American Pop music thing than rock ‘n’ roll.

Rock and Roll is too broad of category to swipe with any brush. I was talking about Heavy Metal and the really hard stuff.

Maybe. But rap and pop are distinctly different.

Oasis just flat out sucks.
Yes, but they decided a long time ago they were going to represent all forms of music for the Hall. They just never changed the name. Personally, I think it is better by including other types of music. It celebrates all of music, not just a single niche of it.

I don’t agree with the Mariah Carey nod. Just too far into the pop category, and she doesn’t rock.

Outcast rocks!
Phish rocks!

But still strange to see them in before so many other deserving musicians.
