Mark Few previews the Iowa game

he's not.

he should have been banned a long time ago

From what I've seen from him over the years, he really only goes after people when they say stupid things. Now, does he take a different tact than I would when they do say something dumb? Yeah, but still...

He's gone after me a couple of times over the years, when I've gone back and looked at what he replied to...something stupid.

Few is correct about conditioning. These guys have not been able to see the floor for 2 weeks. It does play a factor. Rythmn, shooting, etc.

If iowa played in that conference we'd be top 5 too. They play 3 decent non conference teams each year then go hide in their basement for 18 games and come out smelling like a rose.....

Yep. It's pretty darn easy being in the WCC instead of the Power 5. That's why so many programs have been able to pull off what Gonzaga has accomplished. i.e. being the only D1 school (out of 360) to go back to back to back to back to back Sweet 16 (or beyond ... includes 3 Elite 8's and a Title game) the last 5 dances.

And looking at NCAA tourney wins the past 5 dances we'd find UNC with 16, Gonzaga 15, 'Nova 15, Duke 15, Virginia 11, Michigan State 10, Wisconsin 9, Purdue 6, Ohio State 3, Iowa 3

Sure ... Iowa would be Top 5 for sure.

We'll see,.. I will frequently play my best golf after leaving the clubs in the bag for a couple weeks...

I think conditioning for them is a definite concern. I can see them not playing quite as fast as they usually do.

Gonzaga is a very good basketball school, but playing in a power 5 conference probably wears a team down a little more over an 18-20game conference schedule than playing in the WCC winning by 30 every night. Probably also helps with tourney seeding when you only have a few losses on your resume, regardless of the competition. I would love to see the Zags join the big10 and see how they hold up over a full conference schedule! Damn good basketball program, but if you don’t think it’s easy playing in the WCC ur nuts

Im not even watching. I remember Few's PC before the NCAA game against Iowa. He Just didnt know how little ol Gonzaga could hang with Iowa, then the game started. They took it to the Hawks pretty good.

Don’t pay attention to a few idiots. Iowa has a large fan base (mostly football) with a lot of people on the bandwagon that usually don’t follow cbb.

I think he has a legitimate concern and it will likely affect their performance tomorrow. Sucks for him, but that's the reality of playing this year.

He goes after people when they say stupid things?

Lets look at just a few of the stupid things he's said:

* Remember when he told us that Tyler Cook had a serious, season ending injury? That was complete BS. @TheTruthTheWholeTruth called him out on it.

* He has told posters their mothers should have aborted them

* He told another poster he should wheel his wheel chair into traffic

* He has encouraged posters to commit suicide

I don't think anybody would argue that Gonzaga would be winning 30+ games every year in the Big Ten. They simply wouldn't. But they would still probably be a top 5-10 team in KenPom almost every year. KenPom takes into account their schedule. They are dominant even allowing for that easy schedule.

The quality of their program isn't aided by being in an easier conference, but their W/L record is.

Agreed. But getting your asses beat on every game wears a team down by the end of the season. They don’t have to deal with that nearly as much in the WCC. They have a great program, but its very beneficial for them playing in the WCC

No one is claiming that Gonzaga isn't a great team and program, they are exceptional, but the reality of it is that playing in the WCC is a cakewalk compared to the nightly scrums in the B1G. BYU is usually decent and St. Mary's have a consistent program, but it is an anomaly when one of the others rise to national prominence. If there was a B1G/WCC Shootout, it would be a bloodbath and that is just a fact.

Agreed they wouldn’t win 30 games every year but they would still be top 10 every year in any other conference.

are you arguing that power conference teams underperform in the NCAA tourney because of their tough conference seasons? Because that seems a bit silly. If Gonzaga had some unfair advantage in March and April because they got to rest in conference play, it seems likely we would have seen more NCAA tourney success than they have had. I mean since 2000, they only rank 23rd nationally in NCAA tourney performance compared to KenPom expectations (PAKE on Torvik) and 31st in performance above seed expectation (PASE on Torvik).

And no, they are not underperforming KenPom or seed in the tourney. They slightly outperform both. So despite going into the tourney with high expectations annually, they actually have slightly outperformed them.

Some underperforming tourney schools from that same data set include Cincy, UVA, Pitt, Creighton, Duke, and BYU.

Im saying playing in the WCC, they win quite a few more games than if they played in a tougher conference, thus giving them a higher seed in the tourney than they probably would otherwise. On top of that they aren’t going thru the rigors of playing in the tougher conferences, making them fresher come march. IMO that benefits them come tourney time. The original post I responded to was referencing their success in the tourney, so im strictly responding to that

I think if Iowa was in the WCC and won most of the games so they enter the tourney as a number 1 or 2, we would have 2 more wins in the tourney each year.

Think what he was getting at is...playing in tough Big 10 definitely makes it more difficult to get a higher in NCAA Tourney, thus a tougher “row to hoe” in the Big Dance.

All those comments by legend are inappropriate and worthy of banishment.

The Hawkeyes have knocked off No. 1 on three occasions. Iowa was unranked all three times.

* The first came against UCLA in Chicago Stadium in 1965.

* The second came against Connecticut in Madison Square Garden in 1999.

* And the third came against Michigan State in Carver-Hawkeye Arena in 2015.

What year was this?
This will be Iowa’s most high profile game, from the perspective of the AP rankings, since 1987. #1 ranked Hawkeyes beat #3 Indiana, 101-88, in Iowa City and became the first team to score 100 points on a Bob Knight-coached team.

They definitely don't get higher seeds courtesy of a weaker schedule. Few took over for the 1999/2000 season. Since then they have had a 12 seed, 11 seed twice, 10 seed twice, 9 seed, 8 seed twice, 7 seed twice, etc. They have only had a top 3 seed 7 times over that time frame.

In 2016, they were an 11 seed despite a 26-7 record and #27 rank on KenPom. In fact, they have 4 Sweet 16 appearances since 1999 as double digit seeds.

If Gonzaga was getting bonus points for a pretty record against an easy schedule, they'd have been a 1 seed like 15 times in the last 20 years instead of the 3 times they actually got a 1.

Fran I'm not sure. I think Frans Hawkeyes have only been on CBS 3x but I can't tell you who the last team we played was.

It seems like ages since we appeared on CBS, especially since we seem to always end up on BTN TV or an ESPN Network.

Crazy, too, that it's been 33 years since Iowa was ranked #1 in the nation.
