Someone in Mar A Lardo is taking notes.
Truly troubling developments in a key US ally.
Why yes, let those North Korean proxies and their supporters run wild in the streets of Seoul! Sounds like the 2020 summer of love, so no wonder you support it and the fat kid from up north!!

Koreans are kinda weird in their politics. This smells like their typical drama.

But if either NK has in fact infiltrated the assembly, or the SK ruling party just wants to crush dissent, it's not good.

Yoon did this over a budget disagreement and the doctors strike. His own party doesn’t support it. They haven’t had martial law since Park Chung Hee was assassinated 45 years ago.

To be fair, among developed countries it's hard to imagine any other state in their situation. This, however, smells like a power grab even in their precarious position. Trump will have a hard time deciding who he likes more - Yoon or Baby Kim

SK hoping if they declare martial law, cancel elections, close churches, imprison dissidents, kidnap and conscript citizens off the streets and kill their own people the US will send them a couple hundred billion dollars, too.

Guess you missed the Cold War. We did that as BAU. Egypt, Iraq, Chile, Panama Saudi Arabia, Israel, etc etc.

Looks like this turned out to be nothing more than another panic attack for HROT's sissy left, and a big nothing burger like J6........

insane, i thought s korea was a normal place.
but the article does state "Hours later, parliament voted to lift the declaration, with the National Assembly Speaker Woo Won Shik declaring that lawmakers “will protect democracy with the people.” Woo called for police and military personnel to withdraw from the Assembly’s grounds."

does this mean their president declared martial law and their parliament got rid of it in a few hours? if so, maybe this episode will turn out to be a salubrious example of democratic systems switfly ridding autocracy

you just knew the place was becoming 'normal"/going to hell in a handbasket when they passed the ban on eating dog meat.

Still a terrible signal given their post-war history.

It’s good that the Assembly was able to end this, but how can anyone trust the Blue House going forward? Yoon burned three decades of progress and trust in government by breaking out the Chun Doo-hwan playbook.

Wrong. The US and their M.I.C. are behind > 90% of these ‘conflicts’ around the world because there’s billions to be made.
Got to keep trading routes open and in US friendly hands. It’s all about commence in the end. Our military is how we keep the dollar in charge and the big stick. This isn’t any different when the British and French fought various proxy wars. The British military industrial complex made a killing too.

It should be extremely clear in any and every constitution that the executive may not under any circumstances suspend the legislature.

Their constitution allows the legislature to end the martial law with a majority vote so the president fixed that by simply not allowing the legislature to meet.

That's an authoritarian power grab. That's a coup.

Can they? It sounds like the president is using the military to suspend the assembly.

Assembly can't end it if they arn't even allowed to meet.

This is a coup.

The police tried to block them from getting in, but the Assembly met with a quorum and unanimously passed a resolution that should make the declaration legally invalid.

No one seems to know what’s going on. Yoon says he accepted the Assembly’s decision, but the Martial Law Command says he hasn’t revoked the order and that it’s still in effect.

It sure looks that way. Clearly in part about the doctors strike as well.

Proclamation from Martial Law Commander, Gen. Park Ahn-soo.

It said that “all political activities” would be banned, and that “all media and publications will be subject to the control of the Martial Law Command.”

“Strikes, work slowdowns, and gatherings that incite social disorder are forbidden,” it added. It also ordered “all medical professionals” to return to work within 48 hours.
