I think it's sort of funny that they seem to have a process for invoking martial law. I know we've got a vague standard around insurrection/rebellion and habeus suspension, but I don't know if there's much more than that.

Being under constant threat of invasion probably causes people to think about these things a lot more.
The North Korean threat has been used as pretext to do all sorts of unspeakable things.

Trump tried to stage a coup once. Yoon is taking a page from the Trump. Hopefully he's as incompetent as Trump

SK hoping if they declare martial law, cancel elections, close mosque's and this sounds like, imprison dissidents, kidnap and conscript citizens off the streets and kill their own people the US will send them a couple hundred billion dollars, too.

First thing I thought of was that this was preparing for a possible war due to sending munitions and or troops to help Ukraine. Silly me for thinking the West will do anything significant. And the real risk is to continue to do nothing.
In probably the most hopeful sign, there’ve been widespread calls for impeachment and treason charges.

In most military situations he probably would have been justified to. This is where some people, preferably the higher ups in the South Korean military need to take a stand, realize this is a coup and tell their soldiers to stand down so the legislature can go back to work.
I might even go as far as to say to follow orders EXCEPT those orders which prevent the legislature from meeting. You could basically say that you consider any order to act against another branch of the government to be an illegal order.
That is presuming that the military higher ups arn't an active part of this coup and are just trying to follow orders.
I think this is an instance where mandatory service saved the day. These aren’t opportunistic career guys or true believers. They’re ordinary citizens doing their two years before they start their real lives.
You seem like a guy who learned the lesson from Kent State that not enough lefties were killed.
