HUGE Big Ten Tournament implications today!

If Maryland (at IU) and Purdue (hosting Wisconsin) win today, the Hawkeyes get a No. 4 seed and double-bye — which means not playing until Friday.

Otherwise, they’ll be a No. 5 seed and play at 1:30 p.m. Thursday against the 12/13 winner of Minnesota vs. Sunday's Illinois-Penn State loser.

Also, because Iowa locked itself into the 4 or 5 seed with Saturday’s win, it guaranteed it would be on the opposite side of the Big Ten Tournament bracket from Michigan State. That’s a good thing. The only way Iowa faces MSU again until the NCAAs is if both teams make next Sunday’s conference-tournament title game.

Call me crazy I wouldn't mind being the 5.. Get another win (likely, not for sure) and I feel like teams that have already played a game usually play better in that second game.. Seems like they are more comfortable with their surroundings!

i get what you are saying. however, if we want to be playing on Sunday, i am not sure we have the legs/bench to survive Saturday (3rd game in 3 days), let alone Sunday (4th game in 4 days)

i would have to look it up but when was the last time we won a game in the BTT? When is the last time we played on Saturday/CBS?

Can someone please explain how Maryland beating IU helps us?
The conventional wisdom is that a Maryland win + a Purdue win creates a three-team tie for 4th place among Iowa, Purdue and Wisconsin in which Iowa would hold the tiebreaker.

I've raised the question on multiple threads (most recently here: So, who will we play next?) as to what would happen in the event of a four-way tie for 3rd among Maryland, Iowa, Purdue, and Indiana. In this scenario, Maryland would be the #3 and Wisconsin would be the #6, but I haven't gotten a clear answer as to how the remaining tie between Purdue and Iowa would be resolved.

Iowa has gone 4 games in 4 days twice. Did the 4-for-4 one year and just short the second time.

From Hawk Central:

...the Hawkeyes can scoreboard-watch for Sunday’s Maryland-Indiana and Wisconsin-Purdue games to see where they’re seeded next week in Indianapolis.

If Maryland and Purdue win, the Hawkeyes get a No. 4 seed and double-bye — which means not playing until Friday. Otherwise, they’ll be a No. 5 seed and play at 1:30 p.m. Thursday against the 12/13 winner of Minnesota vs. Sunday's Illinois-Penn State loser.

Iowa's staying the 5 seed, 'cause Maryland is not winning this game. IU is playing really well lately, and its in Bloomington.

Just hoping Wisky can knock off PU later. Still feel better (potentially) playing MD on Friday afternoon instead of Purdue [in Indianapolis].

Maryland melting down. Taking bad shots instead of getting the ball to the rim.

Prepare for the 5 seed. Maryland can't hang with IU. That being said would you rather play PU or Maryland.

Indiana needs to stop playing so well and needs to start sucking more. Thank you. They are really not that good and they need to tell themselves that.

I'm probably wrong, but I still say Maryland.

In the end, it doesn't matter. Iowa is either going to make noise in Indianapolis next week, or they aren't. Names on the front of the competitor's chests won't affect those outcomes.

Well either Indiana is elite or they are headed for a big downfall in the NCAA's because everything they throw up is going in lately.

It is hard to believe that IU's "others" are this good. Ferrell is a stud. So is Bryant. But all these guys hitting 3's, getting big rebounds/dunks, Either I didn't follow their recruiting very well or they're playing over their head.

Is there a team in the B1G that is better than Indy at going on scoring runs?

They have multiple players who can stick the 3 consistently.

Oh they're playing out of their minds right jow. Basically what people were saying about us with our run in January after we lost 5 of 6....that we over-achieved and weren't that good in reality....and what not.

It just makes me sick because Fran was on OG Annouby but Crean got him. He would have fit nicely into what we do. I like him better than Bryant.

Pretty hard to say anything bad about them. Outright B1G winners and backing it up with their play today.

I don't expect them to say anything bad about them, they're good. I just hate listening to announcers that act like Dick Vitale doing a Duke game.

I hope Indiana makes a big run in the NCAAs but I just wonder if they go out there in round 2 or 3 and it's clank city.... game over. We've seen this from them before under Crean. Remember 4 years ago with that Zellar / Olyidipo group?

Either way, if we get past the winner of Illinois and Minnesota, we will play either Purdue or Maryland with Indiana waiting in the wings. The good thing is that Michigan St. is in the opposite bracket and we wouldn't meet them until the finals. Of course, all of this is a moot point unless we perform better in the BTT than we usually do.

The conventional wisdom all year was that Indiana wasn't that good and benefited from an easy schedule. I fell into that trap as well. I think their success just goes back to Yogi and is proof of how valuable a point guard can be in the college game.
