Okay so I’m going to do my best to break down the Maryland defense. I grew up playing WR so I know offense much better but I’ll do my best.

Scheme: Maryland will generally operate of of the 3-4 but can easily shift to a 4-3 based on the versatility of our OLBs. Due to injury and the skill of our DBs, you won’t see too much nickel and dime packages except on obvious passing downs. Maryland likes to play aggressive press man to man coverage. We like to blitz situationally and a lot of times will bring a DB off the edge.

DL: Our DE is 6th year senior Sam O #97 (trust me, O is easier). He’s a beast and a playmaker on the field. He has 4 sacks and numerous hurries. Our beef inside is two second year JUCO transfers from Independence CC. DT Mosiah Nasili-Kite is 6’2” 310 lbs. was hurt earlier this year but has returned and looks on form. He had 4 sacks last year in 5 games. Finally the other half of our JUCO guys is NT Ami Finau. 6’2” 320 lbs. He mostly provides size and strength. Overall it will be hard to push our Dline around but they can be susceptible to combo blocking and pulling schemes. Maryland likes to sub a lot on the line to keep guys fresh so expect also to see Greg Rose, Tyler Baylor, and Anthony “Tank” Booker.

LB: The leader of the of lb core is MIKE Ruben Hyppolite #11. He needs to put on some weight but he’s one of those guys who flies around the field and always seems to be in on the tackle. He’s a thumper and on the best tacklers on the team. The WILL was Fanajae Gotay who got hurt game 1. The he was replaced by super talented freshman Brandon Jennings, who also got hurt last week. He hasn’t been officially ruled out but I’ll be surprised if he played. So next man up is Gereme Spraggins. Spraggins has been great against the run but seems to struggle in coverage. SAM is Holt is pretty decent pass rusher. Behind him is “Chop” Robinson who is a borderline 5* true freshman. Chop is a beast in pass rush. Lastly is the JACK with Durrell Nchami. Nchami is coming on a knee injury which ended his season last year. He seems to be starting to get back up to speed. This LB is immensely talented but will sometimes struggle with gap assignments. They also have a tendency to lose contain so a good running QB could take advantage of that.

DB: This is the pride of the Maryland defense. Maryland had 3 legit corners with leader Deonte Banks, ultra talented COVID FR Tarheeb Still #12, and Jakorian Bennett. Unfortunately our best CB Banks went down in game 2 and seems like he’s possibly done for the year. Still and Jakorian Bennett are still a top tier CB duo though. On obvious passing downs Kenny Bennett or Isaiah Hazel will come in. At safety we have Nick Cross #3 and Jordan Mosely. Cross is a superstar and likely Maryland’s best pro prospect. Supposedly the fastest player on Maryland and has 2 ints this year. He’s not you’re typical centerfield type safety though. You’ll see him guarding in the flats, aggressively pursuing the run and they’ll bring him on blitzes. He’s the do it all type player. Mosely is kind of a jack of all trades type. He doesn’t excel at anything but isn’t particularly bad at anything either. Maryland will mostly play “Cat Coverage” as Locksley calls it. Meaning you guard this cat, you guard this cat. So look for mostly man coverage with tight aggressive, physical play. A QB with very good downfield accuracy can take advantage of mostly 1-1 coverage that Maryland plays, but it will take some great throws as our DBs are pretty good at blanketing. A more strict officiating crew could hurt MD as they’ll most likely get more DPI calls with how aggressive they are.

Thank you very much for all the time you put into this, but I have to say, reading your description of both the offense and defense, it sounds like you’re describing a national championship team after they won the national championship. Or an NFL team after they won the Super Bowl. I’m not sure, based on your information, that Maryland really has any weaknesses because everyone is described with such gushing superlatives.

Yeah and they barely beat Illinois. Buy yeah I know we didn't curb stomp Colorado State either.

One thing I like about Iowa fans is they are brutally honest about weaknesses even more than strengths. It’s called humility.

And that’s what works best for continual improvement, and what wins championships because humility creates unselfishness and discipline and teamwork.

whichever team of talented people plays best as a team, wins.

Maryland is talented, and I respect the university, and the program. We will see who executes best as a team tomorrow. Gut feeling is it will end up being Iowa.

JB, it does sound like you are very high on your team which is great but also may just be how you talk about them.

In terms of talent how many players on O and D do you think are for sure nfl draft picks? How many others do you think are possible future nfl draft picks?

this may help us get a feel for the level of talent you are referring to.

He likes his team ;-) .... Good stuff OP, thanks for stopping by. I think M has a lot of talent too. It will be an interesting game. I like the match-ups on paper anyway, we'll see how it plays out.

I have a question/observation regarding the Kent State game. MD's defense had back to back late hits out of bounds at the end of the half. Were it not for a technicality that ruled enforcement of the second penalty be assessed on the second half kick, they would have allowed Kent State to advance into FG range via penalty. I was shocked at the lack of discipline. Personally, I think discipline (or the lack thereof) is a grossly underestimated factor when a game is on the line. All things being equal I always feel that's the tie-breaker against ISU and NE. Is it a factor tomorrow? From what I can see, it would certainly seem this tilts towards the Hawks.

I think its a fair statement that Maryland will be the best offense Iowa has faced so far and Iowa will be the best defense that Maryland has faced so far. After that its about energy, execution and consistency come Friday night.

So I feel like I put the weakness of each unit in the description. But I mean there hasn’t been too much to complain about. The only game they played poorly was Illinois. Offensively they just couldn’t put the ball into the end zone. They were driving a lot but an untimely fumble probably saved that game from being a blowout. Defensively they lost their gaps in the run game which is what I mention in the write up.

I am obviously a little biased haha

as far as NFL talent. On offense, WR Demus, WR Jarrett, and LT Duncan are sure fire NFL picks. Probable NFL picks are QB Taulia (only because he’s undersized and only played a handful of games) and TE Chig (If he picks up production). Could be NFL guys WR Jeshaun Jones (lots of talent but behind Demus and Jarrett).

Defensively: Sure fire NFL guys: S Nick Cross. Probable NFL guys (Because they’re young): CB Deonte Banks, CB Tarheeb Still, LB Ruben Hyppolite.

It’s tough to gauge because a lot of Maryland’s more talented players are younger.

I think I just heard Jennings is out.

From what I’ve been told, that’s been dealt with. I would those two plays, even though back to back) are more the aberration than the norm. Where you see Maryland commit most of their penalties is on aggressive type plays. The defense has a bad habit of hitting anything in sight on a turnover and they get some DPI calls for playing too physical. I would say the only undisciplined aspect Maryland has is they lose their gaps on defense. They have a very young linebacker group and it’s something they are just gonna have to learn from experience. That’s why Maryland has given up a few long runs.

Yeah so we’re down to our 3rd string WILL Gereme Spraggins. He’s good in run support but can definitely be exploited in pass defense.
Iowa does like to use their backs, especially Goodson in the passing game.

Thanks again Jb for coming over to give your opinions on the game! Hopefully neither team has any injuries and both play well (but Iowa comes out on top ;-) ). Go Hawks!

I think Iowa has figured out how to win consistently. Now since 2015 we have been the underdogs that win alot on the road or at home. And we will most of the time make you take a snooze when on offense. Some of our low offensive output has to do with our defense and special teams dominating in the field position game. Petras is OK as he doesn't make a lot of mistakes but is not spectacular. But we also have play makers as well that will likely be unleashed in this game (Tracy, Johnson and Bruce the 4th). LaPorta and Ragaini are established enough. Iowa's special sauce is Phil Parker. It is comical that his name is never ever in the write ups of blog predictions or what have you. Phil Parker is a bad ass and the best coach by far on either sideline.

OP is quite possibly the worst evaluator of talent.
Not true ... the D was really aggressive ... and quite athletic. However, you live by man-coverage ... you die by it too!

Also, perhaps the bigger issue was the youth/inexperience at LB ... Iowa was able to exploit that pretty much all day.

He's was talking about his team. I appreciate him coming over and discussing.
He was respectful and excited.
Why be a fing ass?
Agree, no need for the insults. Everyone else thought Maryland would play better too (not just him BTW).

As I said a number of times. It was a terrible matchup for Maryland. With the injuries to the LBs that makes it even worse.

Hope the kid who got carted off is ok. I think their O is still pretty good. We’ll see how they fair the rest of the way but after the Iowa game it may be tough for a week or 2 (see ISU). Good luck to the Turtles!
