Everywhere I've looked I see nothing but disrespect for our Hawks. Nearly everyone has predicted a 20 point victory for the turtles. I have to SMH because I could've swore I saw MSU roll over them like they were nothing and MSU didn't remotely play their best game, which Iowa has been on the receiving end of multiple times for years. One guy is even saying that Maryland's starting five will all be in the NBA LMAO!!! Sorry but I see maybe Trimble and even Stone will get a look but Laymon, Carter and Sulaimon will never sniff the NBA. That's not a bust, its just honesty. I think the Terps and their drug using fans, will all be brought crashing down to earth. I predict another double digit beatdown. I know we'll get their best shot but manoman are they overrated. They pass the eye test at first but they are shallow and play lackadaisical. Their bench is averaging 17 ppg, 10 rpg, 2 apg between 4-5 players. They've beaten a subpar but scrappy Wiscy team @ Wiscy, pummeled a horrible OSU team by scoring 100 pts!!, and needed OT to beat a pretty average Northwestern team. They've played two ranked teams and lost both games, #9 UNC and #11 MSU.
Again, Iowa is going to run up the score on these guys...if Iowa continues to play like they have. Then #1...here we come!!!

The game is a 1/2 point game and it's one I could see Iowa winning or losing by 15. If Woody were to get into early foul problems it could be a long night.

Carter can play. I don't know how much you've seen of Maryland, but Carter is for real. Stone is one and done, and Melo is a highlight reel passer in addition to being a scorer. Both Melo and Carter are bad match ups for the Hawks in my opinion. Melo is ultra quick and thats a problem for us. Carter is a quick but strong stretch four and likely presents our biggest problem. I doubt if we can handle him inside.

Maryland has so much natural talent I think they sleepwalk through some games (think Iowa / Rutgers). I'm not ready to forfeit, but I wouldn't lay a wooden nickel on this game.

This is a critical game for the Hawks so I think we will be ready. If the Hawkeyes win and that doesn't light your fire, your wood is wet.

The Terps are no slouch. This should be our toughest game of the year. I cannot wait! It seems that Maryland plays to the level of their competition. So, I do not see a blowout by them. But rather a close game. And a good one... Hope you got some finger nails to chew!

It will probably be the deciding game for the B1G championship. Since we only meet once. Win this and we should have the title. Lose and it is no less than a 3 way race...

Bring on the Turtles!!

Maryland is an 800lb gorilla that sleeps a lot. Let's hope they are sleeping tonight.

It is not the deciding factor in the big ten race. 10 more after this one. Long way to go for both teams win or lose after this one.

Where are all of these disrespectful things being said?

I'm a Maryland guy who will be at the game*, and I know nobody trashing your team or predicting a 20-point win. Everybody I know is expecting a tough game against a well-coached and talented bunch of Hawkeyes.

edit: * I suppose this makes me one of those "drug-using fans" from the first post...

I hear the fans will be wearing goggles...so last year.

Probably ignite a fire under Woodbury.

Another half century Terp fan here. I must agree with dconifer. NOBODY that I have seen in Terp Nation has expressed anything other than deep respect for Iowa. I challenge IronFist1976 to produce those delusional Maryland fan posts predicting a 20 point win. Stop flaming imaginary stuff, Iron. We love the B1G, and its classy fans, great teams, and exceptional schools. I thought your new deal for Fran last year was brilliant, since the guy is a winner. Tonight, I expect a terrific game by both teams, and if we can escape Xfinity with a one point win, I will be ecstatic.

Last year I remember a lot of Maryland fans having varying opinions about the Iowa matchup going into our game. Some had seen Iowa play and knew that guys like Aaron White were the real deal. Others saw pictures of White and couldn't possibly believe he was a great athlete (and, to their credit, White does not look like a high riser).

After the game I remember a lot of talk about Woodbury, as well as Turgeon's coaching ability, and also a lot of respect for Iowa as their fans were impressed.

I would not expect Maryland fans to be overconfident about this game. If I were them, I would expect a close Maryland victory given how much talent they have and since it is a home game, but I have not seen any fans predicting a blowout.

Further, even if there is a blowout tonight (in either direction), it shouldn't really change anyone's opinion of these two teams. They are both very good - Final Four caliber good. It will just depend on whether they can play their best basketball when it matters.

Mary Land has some very talented players. As noted, they often seem to play to the level of the competition, but they should be ready to play tonight. They have not lost at home, since joining the B1G. I expect a great game.

Not going to be able to manufacture supposed disrespect at this time.
Hawks are getting love from everywhere.
Of course that will all fall by the wayside with their first loss in B1G play.
But for now they are the college basketball media darlings.

I believe playing the disrespect card is over this year. We have too many good wins to think otherwise. This is the most talented team we will face all year. Win and we clearly are in control of the big ten. Lose and we still control our destiny. This game is a huge opportunity. Nothing more nothing less. It's been a long time since we have been in a situation like this!

We've got nothing to lose, Maryland has everything to lose in this match up. I like the setup, they're pressing, we play relaxed.

No one, especially smart Maryland fans, is taking this Iowa team lightly. Terp fans are not new to quality basketball. They know a good team when they see one.
I promise the Maryland team isn't taking Iowa lightly either. We should expect their best and we'd better come with ours.

Your whole post is pretty stupid, but what exactly do you mean by this?
I was obviously referring to the Turtle fans who see the Hawks on the receiving end of a 20 pt beatdown. Stop acting stupid.

My mistake folks, I should have prefaced my post by saying I read this on the ESPN pregame conversation link. On my phone right now so not too easy to link it. But I stand by my post. I've watched Maryland play and IMO they're underachievers. That's not to say they can't play good basketball but they sure looked uninspired playing at Breslin Center. Be prepared to hear a lot of "We're undefeated at home in B1G Ten play." since their new arena opened or something like that.

Could be one of the more entertaining games all year in college basketball. Should have an NCAA Sweet 16 feel to it I think - both teams will be very ready to play imo.

Yes, it was. If memory serves, things got a little tense too. I expect that 800 lb gorilla to be fully awake tonight.

That's what scares me. I just keep thinking, at the start of the season if I'd said nobody is going through the Big Ten undefeated that I'd not thought of it as ultimately meaning the Iowa Hawkeyes would lose to somebody. But there it is...and this is the game I'd have pointed at to be the toughest.

That's what I thought too Dan, until I saw them play. I like the Hawks chances.

How Gesell plays will say a lot about the outcome. Need him to be more efficient with his passing and shooting than he has been lately. Razor thin margins in this one. If we keep our turnovers under 10 we should win - I don't think Maryland will get as many shots as we will in that scenario and we usually shoot a bit better also, assuming our defense isn't giving up layups or 25 foul shots.

are tickets easy to pick up outside the arena?

Iowa is in control of their destiny. If they play well, very few, if any teams can beat them. They just need to go out there play within themselves and knock down some shots.
As much as I wish that were true, we're not Kentucky from last year. I believe Maryland's best is better than Iowa's best, but Iowa's average is better than Maryland's, if that makes any sense. They have more NBA talent, but we've put it together much better and more regularly than they have thus far. Also, Maryland's game against MSU was their first against any of the ranked B1G teams, and may have been their wake-up call. Hoping for a great game.

Thanks for that, Lute.

This is a big game tonight and will be a tough place to sneak out with a win. Iowa needs to be firing on all levels in this one. Maryland is going to bring its best and has a lot of talent. As someone mentioned above ... I can see Iowa winning ... And I could see Iowa losing by 12-15 ... Like the Rose Bowl game ... momentum is everything ... and it comes down to how focused each team is ... Would love to see us get the win ... Would be HUGE ... Go Hawks!

Laymon was a projected first rounder prior to the year, while he won't be a first rounder he'll still be drafted. As for Carter, Fran referred to him as an NBA player and he and Sulaimon are both 4/5* recruits.
Stone and Trimble are first round draft picks for sure, Laymon is sure to get drafted, and Carter and Sulaimon aren't likely to be drafted but they'll both have a chance to catch on with teams and will be given NBA tryout's (4 of these guys are underclassmen keep in mind).

I like Iowa's chances tonight and we have the best player, but Uthoff is the only guy on our team who will play in the NBA. ... If Jok makes huge strides again next year he may have a shot, but in all likelihood he's playing overseas.
From a talent standpoint Maryland may be tops in the nation this year, I can't think of too many teams that start 5 guys who all have a legitimate shot at the league, with 3 guys projected to be drafted, and 2 in the first round.

MD is no slouch, I agree. Talented, well-coached, lathered up fans....it's a road game. I hope we can win on a national stage, but it's a toss up. I'm excited for it. I'm sure the team is too. Some of my contemporaries may remember a verse from a CCR tune.....

Hey, Tonight,
Gonna be tonight,
Don't you know I'm flyin'
Tonight, tonight.

Go Hawks!!

I'm as worried about Diamond coming off the bench as I am about Trimble or Carter. He is one helluva good athlete and player. I've seen him twice and thought he'd give our bigs all they can handle.

Biggest key, IMO, is that Maryland turns the ball over a lot.........to me that shows a lack of discipline. I have not watched them much, and I know nothing of how Turgeon (sp?) coaches. But if you turn the ball over at a high clip consistently, you lack discipline. Shooting can be hot and cold, momentum can swing, you can get or not get calls........but from my coaching experience you cannot just flip a switch and become disciplined when you feel like it. You either are, or you are not.

If Maryland is shooting lights out, or if the Hawks are ice cold it won't matter. But if both teams play around their averages, then I will take my chances with Iowa because Maryland turns it over, and Iowa converts a high % of turnovers into points.

Man, I don't. I think Iowa's best is 10 points better than Maryland's best. And Iowa has more NBA talent also. Not sure anybody on Maryland's team will get a run in the NBA.
