Maryland

Lots of folks were concerned with Indiana too...until the game started. Iowa just has to go all Temple on the Turtles. All that "athleticism" didn't seem to scare those mighty Owls.

Food for thought: Villanova beat Temple 19-17. (You didn't even know Villanova had a football team, right?) Buffalo beat Temple 36-29. And the very next week, Temple beat Maryland 35-14. I know. Temple is known for its awesome football prowess, but still.... Fear not, little ones. The Hawkeyes, it would seem, at least have a chance. ;)

Playing at home in Kinnick Stadium will give the
Hawkeyes a friendly welcome as they return from
the last two games on the road. The Hawks must
focus on the game plan to beat Maryland and the
outcome will take care of itself.

A lot of speed on the Maryland team. Keep the same defensive personnel minus 33 Moss, insert 8 Hankins.

Agree. We are pretty athletic in the back 7 with the above lineup. One of the most athletic Back 7’s I can recall at Iowa.

Hooker playing as a slot defender is a game changer against these spead teams. He can cover in space, tackle in space, and holds up well enough against the run.

Maryland does look like a tougher game, but with our new quick start, foot on the gas approach and a stout DL (and overall defense) we will win. Tough team Maryland, but we have a better team and the offense is really heating up. We get Niemann and Hock back and our defense gets even better.

I think they're strengths go right into the teeth of our strengths. Iowa just is not going to give up a ton of huge plays anywhere, let alone letting a team completely gash them in the running game at home for a bunch of big plays. Other than the Texas game, Maryland has one of the most inefficient passing games in the country and are not at all built to sustain long drives or get behind the sticks. They're not a bad team, but on the road this is just a terrible matchup for them.

The only thing that concerns me a tad is that Iowa has played better on the road than at home so far. However, the fact that Maryland has been an awful B1G road team (2-11 since going 3-1 their inaugural season) makes me feel better. I expect a hard-fought but solid victory for the Hawks.

Yes, put me in this category. Either Indiana was pulling the wool over my eyes or Iowa is a lot better than I was giving them credit for. Hopefully they can duplicate this type of game against Maryland...Go Hawks
I'm thinking this was their best overall game in a couple of years..Well, the Ohio State game was just as good..

And Nebby ;)

Maryland concerns me because of their big play ability, great athletes. I agree, stop the run, we should win. Canada does through a lot of formations at you also.

Need to win the turnover battle also, that killed us against Wisconsin.

I'll worry about other teams the week we play them.

I'm not so sure it is the case that this team plays better on the road than it is that our last 2 games have been on the road, and the team has really been coming together.

Maryland is a different challenge. The QB is a legitimate run threat, moreso than any QB Iowa has faced this year. Ramsey from Indiana could run, but IU called very few designed runs for him. His TD run where he left Gervase in space was what Maryland will try to do a lot. Hawks seem to have found their rhythm so hopefully they can keep it going.

Feck being concerned. Every weeks we have “concerned” threads. I’ll bet Iowa’s coaches and players aren’t concerned. They’re determined to kick more ass. And they will.

It is bad form to underestimate any opponent. At the same time, as noted above, Maryland's awesome athletes were thumped pretty good by Temple, the same Temple that lost to Villanova and Buffalo. So, there's that.

And Wisconsin lost to BYU.......

A>B>C, so A>C doesn’t work in college football.

But yes, Iowa can’t afford to underestimate anyone.

Thanks for the info. I never knew that.

But here's the thing: People are expressing fear about Maryland's great athletes. I'm trying to calm them down by pointing out the FACTS, one of which is that Maryland and its awesome athletes were trounced by a team that lost to Villanova and Buffalo. Just thought people should know. But thanks again for your insights. ;)

And I just thought people should know you can’t discount a team based on how they performed against someone else. Just because Maryland was beaten by a team that lost to Villanova and Buffalo doesn’t mean they should be taken lightly.

You  at my A>B>C doesn’t mean A>C comment, yet you are trying to put forth the A>B>C so A>C analogy yourself.

But thanks for the effort, anyway. :)

Maryland next week at 11am. The athleticism these guys have concerns me.

Now you're just phoning it in... If you're going to keep doing this tired, old tradition, than at least put a little effort into it so it doesn't look like you're more of an attention whore than you already are.

How do you know Moss isn't faster than Hankins or Brents, or even OJ? Because he's white? I haven't seen anyone running away from him, he just doesn't squeeze the receivers hard enough and react to the ball fast enough. That takes experience and more reps. It took Josh Jackson 3 yrs. to figure it out and even he got beat occasionally. I think we're fine with any of our 4 corners.

Is it because he's white?? You've got to be kidding me.. I'm a white guy. I'm from Iowa. How about this - I have watched every play the Hawks have been on the field this year and, in my Opinion, Hankins covers / plays better. Am I impressed with Moss as a true Freshman? Yes. Get out of here with your "because of the skin color" garbage. Thanks.

You made the comment about speed and insinuated that Moss wasn't fast. I'm glad you watch every play, lol. What does that have to do with anything? Why does Moss need to get off the field because Maryland is 'fast'? How do you know who is faster? I seen this same type of bunk in the past about Bower and it turned out that he was our fastest LB. If you just think the other corners are better in coverage because of their experience, that is fine, but then you wouldn't have needed to bring the 'speed' comment into it.

Speed >> Faster skill players >> The need for better coverage of said faster skill players. I think Hankins covers better. What more do you require without continuing down Butthurt Lane? It's my opinion but since that's extremely dissatisfying for you, check out the PFF grades. Of the 4 that played almost all the snaps, Moss had the lowest grade(s). I don't read that much into PFF stuff and I know that someone always has to be in last but unfortunately it's the player we are discussing. Live with other people having opinions man. It's easier that way.

I guess your reading comprehension isn't too keen. That's exactly what I said. No one can be taken lightly, BUT for those who fear Maryland's athleticism, keep in mind that they did get tromped by a team that lost to Villanova and Buffalo. That doesn't scream powerhouse to me. But then, you're the expert. :D

So if you wanna pick a fight, at least try to do it on the basis of reality instead of making stuff up.

Was just thinking, what does the Maryland secondary look like? With our new found passing capabilities and all. So glad BF talked to the old man!
