Mason City man who allegedly threatened to kill Gov. Kim Reynolds and burn down 43 North Iowa's Crisis Stabilization Housing was arrested Tuesday.
Terrence David Rooney Jr., 51, who was living at the 43 North Iowa CSH facility at 408 First St. N.W. in Mason City, was booked into the Cerro Gordo County Jail on felony charges of threat to commit terrorism and threat to place an explosive or incendiary device.
Rooney called 911 on Aug. 22 and said he was "going to get on a bus tomorrow and kill the Governor," according to a complaint filed by the Iowa State Patrol.
A Mason City police officer made contact with Rooney at the CSH facility, where Rooney allegedly repeated his threat. He agreed to go with the police to MercyOne Medical Center North Iowa for evaluation, according to the complaint.
While he was in the emergency room, Rooney allegedly continue to make statements to multiple hospital staff and social workers about wanting to kill Reynolds and burn down the CSH facility.
Rooney said, "If I were to be discharged back to 43 North Iowa, I will take boxes and plastic bags and set them on fire, burning 43 North Iowa to the ground," according to the complaint.
On Aug. 23, after being voluntarily committed to the Behavioral Health Unit at MercyOne, Rooney allegedly told a staff member in detail about his plans to kill Reynolds, which involved buying a handgun, ammunition, a trench coat, a mustache and a hat, and waiting for her outside the Capitol.
He allegedly stated that he wanted to kill Reynolds due to her and former Gov. Terry Branstad's policies on mental health and mental health institutions. Reynolds served as Iowa's lieutenant governor while Branstad was in office.
Rooney is being held on $10,000 bond.
