Can Nelson get enough pressure to cause a fumble like Ott did at WI...my only concern.
Hesse and the Nelsons need to play more violently, IMO. Both Ott and Nate Meier were good at what I think of as smashing upfield rather than pushing upfield and playing through the OT instead of to the OT
I agree. I really like the Nelsons too in terms of pass rushing ability. They are both athletic for their size and with their long arms could cause havoc in the backfield. I saw Rieff has stepped up as well and was second team DE behind Hesse.
Can't speak for anyone else, but that's exactly the concern for me. It's not whether these guys can be elite, it's whether they *will be* elite this year. They're still RS SOs and a RS FR. 2017 is when you'd expect them to come into their own a little bit. No doubt these guys will be solid (for me), but idk if they'll be able to provide a real pass rush for us yet.these were just RSFR, not even Ott was a mauler at the beginning of his career. Meier didn't become a mauler till his SR season plus nobody has seen Brinks yet as he will be a RSSO this fall.
please don't judge RSFR off of what the SR's looked like or played, they had the same level of developing that Ott and Meier had,
gee whiz M Nelson got hisc1st start vs Stanford and some of you are already criticing his play.
this is said EVERY YEAR it is getting very very old, many were doubting Meier ability going into his SR and yet low and behold he is now a mauler that will be hard to replace,Can't speak for anyone else, but that's exactly the concern for me. Very fair assessment! When you are a developmental program, like Iowa is, you need guys to be good ahead of schedule in order to have a great year. Last year, Jewell and Niemann were great ahead of schedule. This year, we need the DEs to be good ahead of schedule.
They have good tools. But it is a fair concern.
I actually had a good feeling about Meier last year. Only concern was whether he'd be strong enough to hold the edge (I was less concerned once he added another 10lbs or so iirc). But you said it yourself, he was a senior. I'm not panicking, but if Hesse and Nelson can be really good starters this year, that's bonus. That's them being ahead of what's expected. If Jaleel Johnson and Bazata stay healthy, that will help, since our DEs will see one-on-one blocking, and it's good that we have veteran LBs, too. But, we haven't seen either DE (let alone the younger Nelson, who really hasn't played) be an impact guy to this point.this is said EVERY YEAR it is getting very very old, many were doubting Meier ability going into his SR and yet low and behold he is now a mauler that will be hard to replace,
every year this is stated over and over that the outgoing SR's are going to be hard to replace and doubts are cast onto the returning players for one reason or another,
some are going so far as saying the incoming freshman are going replace some of them. because of this doubt. if Morgan can turn Ott a 8 man FB player into a All BT player and Meier another 8 man FB into Mauler type FB players. can't we at least wait to see how these RSFR turn out? before claiming somebody else namely incoming FR are going to better than the players that will be in their 3rd year in the program.
did Morgan and KF waste their time on these players?
Anthony Nelson has a lot of potential, but is still pretty skinny. I think Sam Brinks from Carroll Kuemper will be our 3rd defensive end. He looked good at Valley last week, 6'5" 270#'s . He moves well and seems to have good strength. He played special teams last year , and I think he will help our defense this year. As far as any of the incoming freshmen playing at DE, it is possible, but I wouldn't count on it. Very few DE's have contributed for us as freshman, even Adrian Clayborn needed a redshirt year. I know Ott had his redshirt removed with 5 games to go as a freshman, but that was 2012 when we were really thin and desperate. I wish he had been redshirted that season. I think we will be alright if we stay healthy. I do think Matt Nelson will take a big step forward this season. Go Hawks! And then, you've got Anthony Nelson in the mix at Defensive End, as well.
BEST of Luck to Drew................we all look forward to seeing him play on Sundays!
Insane. Mods please ban him. It shouldn't matter if he got a Christmas gift subscription from a relative that feels sorry for him for having nothing else in his life other than living on a message board and polluting it every daythese were just RSFR, not even Ott was a mauler at the beginning of his career. can't stand the truth can you, or did you really expect them to play like NFL All Pro's in their 1st start or playing time.Insane. Mods please ban him. Ott was even better than he gets credit for imo. DE's of his caliber are very fewI agree with this. Most all of our best pass rushing DE's were guys that were maulers, guys that would smash through the line and punch the OT in the mouth basically. I remember a coach once saying I want Viking Beserkers for my DE's guys that will just destroy anything in front of them to break through the shield wall.
Actually I think that will change when epenesa gets hereThese guys are all Contain/solid fundamentals DE's. The pass rush we had last year was anemic and I don't see it getting much better based on what they showed last year. You never know if someone will explode on the scene though.
Iowa lacks the kind of elite athletes you see on an Alabama defensive line. That is not going to change.
