Those walks and HBP's were a killer for the team. Iowa pitchers with 566 SO and 320 BB. They also had 97 HP and 60 WP. Blech!
Iowa hit .301 as a team this year. If the pitching would have lived up to the hype it could have been one of the best years ever for Hawkeye baseball.
What were their HR numbers?
They seemed like a team that could get lots of hits and score against bad teams.......but against teams with a pulse, the hits were more or less empty stats (i.e. you could have 100 hits and not score a run. That seemed to be Iowa when I watched.)
54 HR for Iowa vs 63 for opponents.
Baseball is a weird game. Iowa hit .301 while opps hit .237. Iowa pitchers had a collective 5.86 ERA while opps had a 7.41 ERA. Iowa's offense led in every hitting category except for HR, BB, and HP.
I didn't do a deep dive, just skimmed over some stuff. If you look at the surface though Iowa would have seemed to have been better than the 31-22 record indicates.
Ol' Doodle agrees. At the same time, it also says an awful lot about just how far Heller has elevated this program that a "tough year" = 30+ wins and 4th place in the Big Ten.A tough year for the program all around
Under the previous two regimes that would have been a high water mark achieved with considerable rarity.
