Fran is gone

That’s where I’m at. If Beth was going to retain him, I think she would’ve released a public statement by now.
I remember Barta sounding luke warm about Lickliter a week or so before he got canned. Even used an upcoming Purdue game as a goal which seemed kinda stupid. Like one game would make a diff that late into the problem. But I think he was just responding to being questioned about Lickliter at the time. I agree Beth not saying anything is interesting but is she being asked, or is there no real opportunity to be asked.

Gonna be hard to build momentum into next year when 75% of your team is gone.

Heavy smoke that freeman, harding, and dix are transferring regardless if Fran stays. Thelwell, Payton Brauns and (likely) Mulvey graduate.

So the only returning starters who have played any meaningful minutes would be Dembele, Traore, and Pryce. Fine players who have improved this year, but not a realistically competitive core.

Fran isn’t coming back. And even if he was, next year would be a struggle
The smoke doesn’t matter. A new coach will attempt to keep who he can (if wants them). Likely a new coach brings players with him and dips deep into the portal. I’m not concerned about anyone leaving.

Me neither. I was responding to a post saying that Fran should stay because he’s got the program headed in the right direction, which I disagreed with.

A coaching change at any school will come with massive roster turnover. But now, more than ever, a new coach can quickly replenish the cabinets

I’m not going to reread this entire thread, but did someone actually say that? That has to be a joke. That is about as opposite as it gets. The team has literally gotten worse every year for 5 straight seasons. That’s actually pretty hard to do, because most coaches get fired prior to that “accomplishment.” There’s no way that a few good recruits and a win at Nebraska should be anywhere close to enough to save his job. Time to move on….

Yeah but we also beat Washington and Rutgers and Northwestern and Penn State and we absolutely destroyed New Hampshire and New Orleans.

1000% Fran is back

Iowa can’t afford to have 1/3 of Carver empty. His buyout isn’t that big of a deal considering they lose millions in attendance each year he’s here.
Agree attendance will continue to suffer if Fran stays—whether it gets substantially better with someone else remains to be seen. FWIW I am hoping for a change. As a season ticket holder, Carver’s been a real drag the past several years. Us regulars do what we can, but it still kinda sucks.

Don't get short sighted Beth.

Really don't think you can afford to let McCollum leave the state of Iowa.

What's the upside to keeping Fran? So he can coach maybe 3 more years with similar results? Then what? Pretty likely that McCollum will be moved on by then.

we've been told Beth is the "real deal."

she made the right decision when it came to Brian Ferentz.

will she make the right decision when it comes to the men's head basketball coach?

we'll likely see in a matter of days.

Why would anyone think this is 50/50. The decision to move on from from should have certainly been decided before the post season.
Fans are not coming back once they’ve made the decision themselves to move on from fran.
Moving forward with the status quo is untenable.

This is her 1st chance to prove that she's the real deal.

The Brian Ferentz decision was handed down from her superiors. She was still the interim AD at that time.

The Brian deal was all but setup for her. She had nothing to do with BF contract requiring point average right? This was before she came in.

Isaiah Johnson-Arigu too. Unless Fran was just informed in the past month he's gone, it's a crappy move to have a kid transfer up and enroll midseason just to have to hit the portal again next month.
Why would either “have” to hit the portal again? If they’re as good as advertised, then the new coach will likely be encouraging them to stay committed. Maybe it’s Iowa City that they are looking forward to and not just the privilege of playing for Fran…

Exactly...ideally you come to Iowa to fight for Iowa, not fight for Fran. And thats why, in part, Fran has alienated a lot of students and fans. It seems he made it all about him and his loyalty to his players and vice versa..an insular existence.

Sure, he might stay. But the new coach didn't recruit him. Fran (plus staff) and IJA have a couple years worth of relationship between them. If Fran is booted, I'd expect IJA to hit the portal again just like he did when Larranaga quit.

What? What are you talking about?

Also, to be clear I'm not saying Fran should stay or go or whatever. I'm discussing the optics of the transfer.

According to a very well known donor, Fran is done.
Well, the donor has a 50% chance of being right. No donor knows what Beth is doing or thinking, and she certainly isn't going to involve donors or corporations in her decision process. *IMO

Is this all Beth's choice, or is it possible Fran has a say in what he wants to do? 🤔

I would bet Beth has talked to some of basketball's top donors about this decision, or one of her subordinates has. They need to know how making a move will go down with the money class.
