Mejia

If he's already committed to grayshirting, I don't know why he'd rather do that at Illinois than Iowa. Perry was by far the biggest draw to IL, but he's obviously no longer there. I just don't understand this whole thing.

I think there is a lot that none of us understand here. There is a story here( or several). Will we ever get the full story remains to be seen.

Are we sure his name is not Thornton Mellon?

Are your coining a phrase for this situation? When a guy commits to school A, then leaves for school B, then changes his mind and goes back to school A only to change it up once again and returns to school B - its a Triple Lindy.

Holy cow you better get the trade mark on that, although I don't know how many times in the next 30 years this phrase would ever apply again, probably never, but if it does, you can cash in! Crap, Iowa just got Triple Lindy'd.

Seems pretty straight forward.

The kid couldn't get into IL after getting a good offer. So he decided to go to Iowa a second time and then was disappointed with our offer.

He'll prolly go the JC route at a school in IL to get the grades needed for enrolling at Illinois.

One element you're missing is that he couldn't get into Iowa, either. Which, btw both he and the Iowa coaches knew already.

lol. This is crazy, and is highlights a major reason why I don't follow recruiting as much anymore. I'll wait until they actually get here. Before that, anything can happen.
I agree. I do not follow recruiting or get excited about how a kid will do or who is a can't miss kid etc... I guess it is just the Zen wannabe Master in me who likes to live in the present and the now. On the other hand, is it November yet?

Did Iowa get Triple lindy'd or did Illinois get Triple Lindy'd? I am not sure, maybe both of them were a part of the same triple lindy? Is that even possible?

he's just a kid trying to find a place. right now he's paying for not taking school serious enough. it is probably this families first experience with getting a kid in college.

Not sure what to think on this. I really am not to disappointed and wasn't too excited when he had changed his mind to come back. I think he is the one that is going to miss out on this deal and if the grades were not there in the first place they will probably be the bigger issue going forward for him. Actually I am more excited about the Sam Cook making the switch to wrestling. The added depth up top is a good thing.

Agree ... It's so out of hand now with kids committing and decommitting. Until they walk on the mat/court/field wearing black and gold I've learned to not hold my breath.

My question is why commit a second time (when you didn't like the initial offer) without knowing/liking the offer?

I wish the kid the best, it just seems like he could've used a little more guidance throughout the process.

Seems pretty clear that in his heart he wants to wrestle for Iowa, but financially Illinois is the better decision for him and his family.

His grades must really be bad.

the situation makes logical sense if your high school transcript is hot trash.

I'd love to see Happel at 133 if he loses to Turk at 141. And vice-versa, though in my mind Turk seems the bigger of the two. Hate to see either of those guys on the bench when we have a gaping hole at 133 (sorry, Laux, no offense).

I'm not saying Perry wasn't a big part of recruiting at Illinois, but to say that he was "by far the biggest draw" I don't think is accurate. Heffernan is an amazing technical coach. If you have never had the pleasure of listening to Heffernen break down film of a match it is truly an experience. Talk to some coaches that have been in a film room with him and they will tell you the same thing.

Poeta has been added to the staff who is excellent. He has future Head Coach written all over him.

But the real draw actually might be Jeremy Hunter. He was a National Champ at 125 and he been credited with contributing immensely to Delgado, Richards, and Kennedy's success. Delgado has said he drilled with Hunter more than any one else during his collegiate years. He also of course gives a lot of credit to Perry as well. But the point is, Perry leaving is not going to see Illinois fall back into irrelevance like the pre-Johnson/Heffernan era.

Time will tell exactly. Breaking down film is great but you need to get it to translate on the mat. I would want a coach that can get on the mat and show me exactly. Perry is an exciting personality and kids like that. Not saying IL is going to fall off entirely either. IL has some great homegrown talent, lucky for us we have been the beneficiary of some of it.

Mejia is not a 133 IMO so not sure what good he was going to do us. Too much drama as well.

Poeta is far more liked and respected in the state of Illinois than Perry ever was. Also, Poeta can still wrestle whereas Perry cannot consistently.

Not by my friends that are IL fans. You have obviously taken serveys on it or something. Sure it is his alma matter and that helps. Also I was comparing Perry to Heffernan and the ability to show them physically not necessarily going 100 percent. Like I said before, time will tell and I am happy with our addition!

It will be interesting to see if Poeta can keep the best in state using his ties through his wrestling club. For some time a significant portion have gone out of state with Iowa definitely being a benefactor.

Also, Ramos just snagged a good one in Melendez for UNC.

They love Poeta in the state. Quite frankly, Perry was terrible with the alumni as well as with the HS coaches. It's why I viewed as a win win for Illinois and Iowa. A guy that can recruit in the state of Illinois and a guy that is a great 1 on 1 coach with wrestlers that has some funk. We all win here.

I think Ramos will always have a shot at the Izzy Style kids.

A shot....sure. But if you think Ramos is on the same footing as Poeta for recruiting the Chicago area in general you would be mistaken. Poeta, I believe is going to make a the major impact on recruiting that everyone thought was going to come to Illinois with Perry. If Illinois could keep the homegrown talent at home and only reach out for a couple out of State kids when needed for specific weights, then we can be very competitive with the top programs. I really believe that. Very similar to what Ohio State had done with Ohio kids under Tom Ryan or even PSU with the PA talent under Cael. So far neither Illinois nor Northwestern has been able to do that even marginally well. Hopefully, Poeta will at least be able to slow the migration of the elite kids out of State. Northwestern is another story and I am still bitter about our administrations handling of our previous coaching situation, one step forward two steps back seems to be the Northwestern philosophy for athletics.

Sounds like you just listened to the T-Row and Funky Show lol

Football recruiting is 10x worse. Stopped following that years ago but used to LOVE it.

Yep, it literally sounded like you were reciting what Tommy was saying!
I agree that Perry was not a big draw to instate kids and I also agree that Ramos will not be as big of a draw to Illinois kids as Poeta. The one time Illinois kept a lot of Illinois kids home was when Mark Johnson first became the coach. At that time it was the place to go for an Illinois kid. It would be nice to have that happen again. Like everything else though, it did not last forever.

Love the Poeta family and wish him well outside of against the Hawks. Some of his siblings are Hawkeyes, btw
