Merriweather not drafted

I'm surprised as well but he would be a great UDFA choice for a lot of teams. Many times a UDFA ends up being a better deal than a round 7 pick.

I’ll make it clear that I’m happy for the guys that played and I feel no Ill will for anyone who didn’t.

Those gms/scouts look at everything. They over analyse ever detail. The NFL network's Daniel Jeremiah said he watches how hard guys play on special teams to judge how much they love playing the game. Dodging the bowl game at a proud program like Iowa, where guys like Sam Laporta, Jack Campbell, and Riley Moss decide to suit up and dominate one last time, is a bad look. Especially when you follow it up with a slow 40 at the combine.

Edit - he was a fringe guy to begin with

Exactly. He’s a fringe guy to begin with and didn’t test well. Has nothing to do with sitting out a worthless bowl game. If Moss, Jack and LaPorta decided to sit it wouldn’t have effected their draft stock 1 bit. I’m glad they played. They are all legendary players, especially Campbell. But it’s BS to say Merriweather didn’t get drafted because he didn’t play in the bowl game. He was a 6th-7th round guy anyway.

Maybe didnt to most but im drafting fringe guys who like to play.

Lmao none of this matters you dolt
You’re the fool that thinks he didn’t get drafted because he didn’t play in a bowl game that nobody watch, one team had nobody play in it and hardly anyone attended. He didn’t get drafted because as @ping72 said he was still the 58th best guy available after the draft ended. He’s a high character guy, I believe he was also a captain? If he doesn’t make a team it’s because he’s not good enough, not because guys like you want him to play for your entertainment.

ESPN has him as the 58th best player available…at the conclusion of the draft. IE: a late 9th round pick if the draft were to go past 7.

So it’s not a surprise.
So if we go ahead and assume ESPN's rankings are an accurate surrogate for what NFL front offices think: why was he rated that low?

If going purely by how good of a safety he was in college, he was better than a lot of safeties that did end up getting drafted. That's what makes it surprising to me. He didn't sit out the bowl game thinking he was going to be a "9th rounder."

Seems it must've been a poor combine more than anything?

Worthless bowl game. Please go away. Please don't post anymore.

The bowl game that was played in a half empty stadium without half of Kentucky’s starters? Such an intense game. The game where we played our 3rd string QB and didn’t convert a 3rd down and still kicked their ass? Enthralling.
I had a blast in Nashville. Spent six days there. Drinking beer with hawk fans during week and after winning game was a blast.

Thanks for summarizing all your chats with the gm's.

Who knows? I'll admit I thought he was 3rd day pick for sure. Have to imagine that part of the reason he sat out the bowl game was because he thought similarly, and/or got similar advice from Iowa and guys in the process.

He evidently didn't have the greatest combine/pro day performances which i imagine cost him. Which drives me nuts because i'll never understand how NFL gms/coaches put more weight on that seemingly than they do in actual games.

Saw he signed with Tampa, so best of luck to him.

NOW we know why Levis fell to round 2!
Everything I've read does not suggest that was the issue directly. Many GM's were concerned about his character. He was all about me and not very humble. Top QB's in the league, such as Mahommes, are humble. Coaches question is he will be coachable because he has things to fix. He didn't have a great pro combine either.

Good college safety albeit from Iowa doesn’t equate to draft pick. He was actually one of the less productive KF safeties.
Its interesting. A lot of Iowa's cornerbacks end up at safety in the league and a lot of our safetys go undrafted, BUT make teams and play for several years, because once they get on the field and are down to what they actually do there, they show their value. I think KM has a shot to hang around for awhile...

I was not aware of his pro tryout numbers. Slow is not good in football at any level or position except maybe Oline if you have three fast steps and great technique. But not good for safety unless your brain gives you a one or two step head start. I am one many guys who could catch, hit, tackle, dribble, shoot etc etc but was pretty slow and you just cant make teams with that liability.

But he was a great hawk making lots of huge plays and I hope he can just get on an NFL squad for 2nd team and special teams work or do a couple good years on practice squad and work his way on to a team as that is what he wants to try.

Geno Stone, Dane Belton and Amami Hooker are three saftey/cash players playing safety. They never played cornerback.

Jake Gervase and Bob Sanders and Tyler Sash also come to mind. Plenty of Iowa safeties that played in NFL under Parkers tutelage.

Didn't say they did. Now go back and look at all the Iowa CB's who got drafted and see where they ended up. All the guys you mentioned were basically hybred cash players.
