Michigan State/Michigan ending

UM had the ball while the clock was running. They called Time out at 10 seconds to set this play up.

My buddy was trying to tell me that if they keep the clock running and set up for a play and have a false start, they could of had a 10 second run off? Therefore there would of only been 2-3 seconds left and therefor could of ran backwards for 2 seconds and ran the clock out.

Could that of happened? I told him the 10 second run-off doesn't work that way, but I can't find anything online about it.

This one is on the coaches. Just run the ball. Maybe you get a first down, but if not you have run at least 4 seconds off the clock. Michigan State had no timeouts and the odds are that they could not have run kind play and still kicked a field goal.
