Midlands

Is this the tournament that in the past has done 6 minute matches in the consolation bracket?

They (the NCAA) closed that loop a few years ago. Riding time, match time, and mat size (maybe other things too) had to be according to NCAA rules or, like SHP said, the matches would not count toward seeding or APR for NCAA qualification. (this is all top of my head stuff . . . and I'm not a journalist, so there may be inaccuracies to my statement.)

Yes. They changed the rule in 2008-09 (ironically, the last year before they went to a two-year rules cycle) stating that all collegiate matches MUST be seven minutes.

You mean RPI. APR has to do with how well the kids are doing in the classroom, not on the mat.

I obviously have no idea what the plan is for Lee, but I just have one of those feelings that a Lee-Suriano match will not happen at Midlands. Something will happen, or someone will sit out the match for some reason. The hype leading up to such a match would seemingly beg for a letdown.

I'll tell you what, though -- I wouldn't want to be the coach on either side if both guys compete in the tournament and are slated to face one another. I'd be on pins and needles for what is at stake/risk for both Lee (health) and Suriano (ego/RU hype machine). Bad stuff could happen as a result of that match . . .
If Lee competes at all this year the coaches wouldn't have any more concern for his health than any of their other athletes. If there is any additional concern then he won't be competing. Also facing Suriano wouldn't some how put his health more at risk as your statement reads.

Somewhat agree on what's at stake for Suriano and RU. But Midlands results will be forgotten by March for him. NCAA finals or bust regardless of Midlands result.

Points taken. I guess I just view old injuries as more prone to aggravation against tougher opposition. But yeah, the coaches shouldn't have him out there if they aren't convinced he is 100% healed/rehabbed. But Midlands could be the first true litmus test of that, and so I would naturally be a bit nervous for him.

No way he competes as a true frosh unless that knee is in as good of condition as they expect it to be 18 months from now.
He will be tested in the catacombs of Carver against tougher competition for far longer than the <30 minutes he will spend on the mat at Midlands. Toughest lightweight room in the country remember. Midlands won't be the 1st true litmus test, just maybe the 1st time fans get to see he's good to go.

I pretty much expected that take to be voiced by at least a few. IDK, I've heard it before with other joint injuries, and it seems that what looks/feels fine in the room just doesn't necessarily hold true out on the mat in a fierce competition (which I would expect a match w/ Suriano to be). But I'm certainly not an expert, and I'm sure circumstances differ in key ways. Which leads to my trepidation. Call me a nervous nellie in that regard, I guess.
