Mike Brey retiring

I have no doubt Fran would at least consider Notre Dame. It's probably one of the only jobs he would consider. That said, Fran's 63. I just think ND will look to hire more of a young up-and-comer.
At least that's my hope.

There's no way ND hires 63 year old Fran. He won't even be on any list at his age. ND fans would be up in arms if that happened.

Fran and sons wouldn't move to ND even if offered the job. Too invested in Iowa basketball at this point.

I think they love Iowa City but hate the fans. Mrs. McC has come out and talked about it. Connor was ripping on turnout earlier in the season.

I think the McCaffery's would be VERY interested in ND, but I'm not sure that ND would share the same interest. ND likes to act like they are morally superior, and Fran's baggage might outweigh his upside.

EDIT: Micah Shrewsberry is from indiana, coached at south bend, butler, and purdue, and is rocking with penn st. right now. And he's 46. If Penn St. finishes the season strong, I would be shocked if he isn't at the top of ND's list.

Seeing Shrewsberry the most on Twitter for initial rumors. The only Fran mentions are from Iowa fans.

If I was ND's AD, Shrews would be the first person I'm calling. He's Indiana born and raised and has spent his whole life there. He's also recruiting decently at a school that has very little basketball history.

All Fran had to do was teach a little defense, and not waste a lottery pick and NPOTY and he'd have a statue outside Carver.

Another name I'm seeing a lot of: Poter Moser from Oklahoma. He coaches Loyola Chicago to their final 4 runs. My wife actually is a Loyola grad and got to know Moser a bit--that dude is about as devout of a Catholic as it gets. Would not be shocked at all if he's their top choice due to that and his history of recruiting the Chicagoland area.

Every once in a while there are moments that really make you pause and realize how fast time moves. Seeing that Fran is 63 and that he was 50 (I believe) when he came to Iowa is just crazy to me. How fast 13 years flies by….

Fran would have to convince ND that he is both a superior option to any of those on the list AND willing to commit to coaching into his 70s (ala boehiem or coach K). I don’t see it - but stranger things have happened.

He will be on no legitimate lists. He’s 63. Cmon guys. He and his wife might want the job but they aren’t going to want him. He’s too old.

Fran isn’t going to snag the ND job. Doubt he would even be considered.

Fans are fans everywhere. There wouldn't be a smoother ride at ND. And, they are pretty invested in the community for hating the fans.
As others have mentioned, Fran is 63. Personally I think he's the kind of guy who has a number in mind for retiring, and will walk away when he hits it.

Congrats to Brey on maintaining a solid career while also being a great guy. Loved seeing him make that NCAA run last year. I'm wondering if he's been encouraged to step down internally. Rough year for them and he's been there for a long time.

Fran is not going anywhere … unless Gare Bear includes ‘making the sweet 16 at least once’ as an addendum to his current contract.

Robbing Peter to pay Paul, or vice versa.

If I was Norte Dame and all the money they have, send a blank check to Jay Wright to see if wants to Un-retire and coach a few more years!
