Mike played at IU from 1977-1980 and is 27th on the B1G All Time Scoring List at 2,061 points.

He was an NBA head coach in Atlanta & New York.

He has never coached in college, which means he’s never confronted the recruiting, roster construction and management demands at this level.

He will become the 30th coach in IU's history.

Who? Has he ever coached college before? Looks like a reach!

My favorite non-Iowa BIG player from the Ronnie Lester era. They were teammates on the '79 Pan Am team.

The 1979 Pan American team was one of the United States' youngest and most explosive squads ever. Behind the coaching of Indiana University's Bob Knight, the USA cruised to a 9-0 record and the gold medal, while averaging 100.8 points a game. It marked the first time that a United States team had averaged more than 100 points-per-contest in the Pan American Games.

The high-powered offense of the U.S. featured five players who finished the competition averaging in double figures. Led by 6'5' Indiana University junior Mike Woodson, who averaged 18.3 ppg., collegiate All-Americans 6'7' Michael Brooks and 6'2' Kyle Macy contributed 17.4 ppg. and 12.1 ppg., respectively, while Mike O'Koren and Ronnie Lester also averaged in double figures. The USA's talent-laced roster also featured Minnesota junior Kevin McHale, and recent high school graduates Ralph Sampson and Isiah Thomas, who would all go on to stardom in the NBA.

Woodson's situation is similar Juwan Howard's, and no doubt IU is hoping for similar success. It will be critical for Woodson to hire the right assistants to mitigate his inexperience with recruiting and the other idiosyncrasies of college basketball.

Looks like they are also hiring Thad Matta as associate Athletic Director, to oversee men's basketball.

As stated guy has never coached in college. Below .500 winning % as a NBA coach. Last time was a head coach was in 14’ and is 63 years old and has zero name recognition with young players. Besides being an alum how are Hoosier fans going to spin this as being a good hire?
Juwan Howard probably had no name recognition among high school players today until he took the Michigan job. Former long-time NBA player and former NBA coach means something, though, regardless of name recognition. Woodson is older, but similar situation.

Pretty obvious now that Matta was offered the job but lost it when he failed the physical. The IU athletic department then screwed up majorly by releasing that info to the media exposing themselves to serious legal liability. They then hire Matta as Associate Athletic Director as a compromise for all parties. Seems almost certain this is what actually went down.

Matta is almost 10 years younger! If Matta is actually healthy he’s clearly a better candidate.

It'll be interesting to see how this "co head coach" thing works out. IU essentially hired 2 guys to run the basketball program.
it is my understanding that AD office can’t have contact with and actively recruit athletes. Am I wrong in this?

Howard’s greatest hire was Phil Martelle, a lot of college coaching experience to lean on for Juwan.. Woodson has much more coaching experience than Juwan, but will need to get a strong recruiter on his bench.

Recruits may wonder how long a 63 year old coach has a
future at Indiana. This is a hire that makes no sense for
a long range re-building program for Indiana. They have
never really replaced Bobby Knight.

Yeah all those things were a huge set back for Juwan Howard. Wonder if he will ever get it figured out.🤔

Mike Woodson will be SIXTY NINE years old when the high school sophomores that he will soon start recruiting are seniors in college. So yeah, no difference at all between him and Juwan Howard. LMFAO!

He is very respected and well liked by NBA players. Not sure how that translates in college? Matta was a good move as he is well connected around the Great Lakes region. This will help with recruiting. Howard brought in a great Assistant Coach group. I'm guessing Indiana will be looking to do the same. Maybe Indiana has their eyes on a few up and coming young coaches and will try to bring one in to the staff.

Dont watch no crappy nba! If it were not for hawkeye basketball or football i wouldnt watch much sports at all except high school! Why does every school need to hire a black coach now? A coach like porter moser, if he wanted it , would have been better but to each his own!

So you don't know anything about basketball and you're kinda racist. Awesome, man.
