Minnesota becomes fourth state to offer universal free school meals

Don’t see how anyone can argue against this
I'm very pleased to see this reaction from people. It was just a few years ago when my mother and this group couldn't get their school district to allow for what they called "Angel accounts" where people in the community could pay past due hot lunch balances so poor kids weren't removed from hot lunch lines and handed sack lunches. They had to get a law passed in Iowa requiring the school district (the alma mater I call mediocre for reasons like this) to allow for this because apparently some school administrators get draconian and vindictive when you make them bill collectors.

A similar ballot measure passed in my state. I voted against it for the reasons you mentioned. Seems to me the answer is to expand eligibility, not have taxpayers pick up the tab for students of families who can afford meals. Seems the same concept as the voucher programs, which I’m also against.
Agree. I’m against vouchers too.

This has been part of our charity since my son was in 1st grade. We pay for his lunch and we donate the same amount to cover anyone that falls behind.

We actually couldn't do it for 2 or 3 years a few years ago because some rich person in town anonymously paid for every students lunch k through 12. Now starting last year we are back to paying for ours plus 1.

A lot of states went this route during COVID. They were begging people to come pickup the free meals during remote learning. I figured it was only a matter of time before they started offering it free to everyone again— it’s hard to give out free stuff then pull it back.

The repubs ain't wrong that trying to improve reading and math scores should be a focus. But if some of these these kids aren't coming to school with basic needs met, it's pointless. Bravo Minnesota.

Agreed the test scores are the end game for both parties. If a child doesn't know where they'll sleep that night or where their next meal comes from, test scores will be of little interest foe the child.

I've been saying this for years. Thousands of children have such crappy home lives and are in a survival mode constantly, what they score on a math test means nothing to them. When I taught BD I would tell the kids I would buy them a 12 pack of pop of their choice if they were proficient on any of the state tests. It would at least get them to try their best. Otherwise they just felt like it was a waste of their time.

Same as trying to judge teachers on test scores when they have different clientele. They were looking at PE when NCLB came out and the way my schedule was set up I could have kids 1st quarter of 7th grade. Then NOT get them again until 4th quarter of 8th grade. But I was supposed to be held accountable for their fitness scores. It's ridiculous in so many places.

Maybe if you wouldn't provide kids with "a 12 pack of pop of their choice" they'd do better with their "fitness scores"

This is a perfect description showing there is really "no free lunch." Why should poor or middle income citizens have their tax dollars pay to feed well off students? If you can afford to pay for your own child's lunch, why shouldn't you" What's next, public provided clothing for students?

Makes sense, but then what is your solution? Simply let the kids get away with not trying and just pass them along to the next grade? Seems like excuses are more prevalent than solutions.

I agree with you and that's a rarity. There's just so much more to it than people realize. It's a HUGE dilemma. Laws need to be written/changed. As a society, we are failing our young people too often.

“I have yet to meet a person in Minnesota that is hungry,” he said. “I have yet to meet a person in Minnesota that says they don’t have access to enough food to eat.”

It’s Bernie Sanders and Nina Turner’s policies that causes bad parents. This is why we have free school lunches. Bad parents want everything for free.

I am generally for zero extra spending since we cant seem to spend within our means as a country. I can support this though as I feel it is for the betterment of everyone's community.

With most blanket policies like these unfortunately you will see waste and abuse seep in before long.

Great platform, Republicans.

Republicans won't campaign on it, it will just be a policy priority if they're able to win. Democrats of course will make no attempt at all to use this as an issue to bash the Republicans. Need to talk about the prescription drugs and the infrastructure bills.

No Brainer. Well done. Iowa should do this.
Why? The left on this board trips over themselves everyday whining about corporate welfare and low taxes for the rich, why is giving free food to rich kids paid for by taxes from the poor and middle class a fair idea?

How refreshing from this State.

Starting this fall, students at Minnesota schools will get free meals regardless of their ability to pay.

A bill signed into law Friday, March 17, by Gov. Tim Walz provides more than $800 million in funding for school lunches and breakfasts over the next four years. A free meals program was one of the top priorities this session for the governor and Democratic-Farmer-Labor lawmakers, who say they want to craft a state budget that will prioritize education and families.

For the "children loving" Cons who "care" once their born?

Republican opponents of the bill raised concerns about the potential for waste and misappropriations. Others said the state would be better off spending money on improving reading and math scores. Sen. Steve Drazkowski, R-Mazeppa, got national attention for remarking on the Senate floor that he had never met a hungry Minnesotan.

“I have yet to meet a person in Minnesota that is hungry,” he said. “I have yet to meet a person in Minnesota that says they don’t have access to enough food to eat.”
