or at the least they shouldn’t be able to run the ball this week. Not without both of their star RBs.

Several things need to happen:
1) concentrate on shutting down that run game early. Get them behind the chains and unleash the NASCAR pass Rush.
2) Knock the QB on his ass, early and often. Sounds like he gets rattled once he has been pounded to the turf.
3) with our pass rush, MN won’t Have time for long, slow-developing pass plays, so I think we need to play press coverage, up close, bellybutton-to-bellybutton defense by the CBs.
4) Get a lead and possess the ball. More utilization of our TEs to keep the chains moving.
5) when we get that lead and shrink the game down, Fleck will realize he has to pass, which plays into our hands, IMHO.
6) Phil talked about moving Hooker or Gervase down into that OLB spot in certain situations and this is the time to do it. Get Geno Stone in at safety and pull Hockaday, since we know they have to pass. This puts a lot more speed on the field and hopefully our pass rush can force some bad throws that lead to turnovers.

This is a perfect week for that to happen.

Mohammed Ibrahim looks pretty decent. While talented, Minnesota's 2 healthy RBs are young ... and inexperienced. That might make it a little harder on them to tote the rock.

Famous last words when we say someone cannot run the ball against us. LOL No, they shouldn't be able to, something DiNardo has pointed out. Basically he says their offense won't be able to do enough for them to win the game. He is correct of course, but this is why we play the game and hope we don't leave a giant Turd on the field tomorrow.;)

I would love to have what the OP posted play out. I think the Hawks can shut down the run game, but I believe they are weak against the pass.

IMO, the most important thing is to not have wasted possessions. Need to score frequently...TD's, not just FG's. I remember a game vs Minnesota not that many years ago where the Hawks moved the ball all over the field but left a lot of points on the board. It kept the game close and Minnesota pulled it out in the 4th.

if Minnesota is gonna win... they are going to do it by running multiple trick plays... throwing the ball deep... and capitalizing on special team mistakes.

I don't like being negative... at all.... but there is something wrong with Iowa's special teams... its not one man... its the whole unit.

if Iowa can fix this problem right now... they don't lose another game for the rest of the season.

My point, exactly.

Hawks better show up ready to play ... which I am hopeful they will since Floyd is on the line. Hopefully they will not - in the words of Scothawk- “leave a giant Turd on the field tomorrow.”

Yep ... 2017 Purdue game is still fresh in my mind ... if the Hawks lay a turd ... they easily lose!

As it is, we sharted a victory down our pants against Wisconsin .... hopefully we don't repeat those same mistakes.

In the past I would agree with OP, but I'm not sure Minnesota needs to run much to give Iowa problems this time. Their WR's are better than in the past and a couple explosive pass plays could change the entire game. The offense looks different now even before the #1 RB Smith got hurt. They've almost changed to a team that passes to set up the run. If they can't pass pro it's gonna be a long day.

I did read, on another site, that their OL pass protection was exposed vs Maryland. It was not good. Especially their RT. I am hoping Anthony Nelson has a big game.

It shouldn't matter if Minnesota has their full arsenal of running backs healthy or not. Iowa has already faced two of the top running backs in the country this season. This game is about Iowa. Does Iowa come out wanting to blow the Golden Rodents out or will it be another ho hum, sleep-walking kind of performance? To me, this has been the biggest reoccurring theme of Iowa football the past several years. Yes, some of it has been stale, boring, and predictable play calling, but a lot of it is on the players. I guess whether the chicken or egg came first can be debated but if Iowa really wants to get back to a higher level than 7-5 type seasons then they need to consistently blow out teams like Minnesota.

No excuses. Come out with a swagger and confidence. And yes, the play calling needs to reflect a certain type of attitude. That's what I'm looking for tomorrow. It's time for Iowa football to be dominant again because they certainly have enough talent on both sides of the ball.

Look for MN to go to short passes and screens to nullify the pass rush like Wisky did. Iowa's D is schemed to give up those shorter routes to prevent the big play. As others have said before me... Iowa is happy to let a college level QB, especially a true freshman, have to make repeated precise throws to move their team down the field. MN might score a couple times early until the Iowa D makes adjustments. But I don't know how MN is going to consistently put together long drives and score enough points to win. Don't give them a short field or commit Purdue-esque penalties and the D should be fine.

Iowa needs to control the clock, run the ball, mix in PA pass, and not turn it over. Not sexy... just execute and they should win going away.

Lots of interceptions then, and more possessions for Iowa.

The short, quick pass has to be in Gophers plan, absolutely agree. We all know that our CBs tend to play 7 yards off the ball, even when it is only 4 yards for a 1st Down.

My hope is that Phil recognizes the only way for MN to stay in the game is these short quick passes, which is why I am hoping for press coverage. Don’t just concede the easy 5-yard pass. Smother the Rodents!

Exactly what I would tell my defenders along with look for opportunities to jump the short crap. Iowa's DL may be good enough to win the LOS with 3 guys.

Hope you’re right in this as I would hate to see Iowa’s defense make Minnesota’s RB look like a Heiman trophy winner this Saturday

I remember one year when the Gophers could not pass the ball. That QB made the Hawkeyes look silly.

Not so fast. We will have 3 in the back 7 with very limited playing time. Press coverage could lead to big plays, and IMO big plays and or turnovers is the only way for the gophers to win. I look for Toren Young to have a big day.
