After 40 years of owning the Minnesota Twins, the Pohlad family said Thursday it plans to sell the team.

The Twins have had great triumphs on the family’s watch. With Kirby Puckett leading the way, Minnesota won World Series titles in 1987 and 1991. Since the turn of the century, the Twins have won the American League Central Division title nine times and claimed a wild card spot once.

There also have been frustrations — the Twins finally broke an 18-game postseason losing streak last year.

“For the past 40 seasons, the Minnesota Twins have been part of our family’s heart and soul,” Twins executive chair Joe Pohlad, a third-generation owner, said in a statement. “This team is woven into the fabric of our lives, and the Twins community has become an extension of our family. The staff, the players, and most importantly, you, the fans — everyone who makes up this unbelievable organization — is part of that. We’ve never taken lightly the privilege of being stewards of this franchise.

“However, after months of thoughtful consideration, our family reached a decision this summer to explore selling the Twins. As we enter the next phase of this process, the time is right to make this decision public.”

The Twins have been competitive in recent years — they went 87-75 and made the playoffs in 2023 and won a playoff series for the first time since 2002. The manager, Rocco Baldelli, has led the team to three division titles in six years.

But being close to greater success has been part of the frustration from a fanbase that has wanted the franchise to take another step. After the successful 2023 season, the team faced a loss in local television revenue due to the bankruptcy of cable network Bally Sports. Pohlad then ordered a spending cut that amounted to a nearly $30 million salary decrease — something that rankled fans who have long been frustrated with the family for its conservative approach to player spending. The Twins went 82-80 this season, missing the playoffs after a late-season collapse.

The Minnesota Twins started play in the American League in 1961 after the Washington Senators relocated to the Minneapolis area.

Pohlad said he recognizes the team’s importance to the area, and that will be a consideration in the process.

“After four decades of commitment, passion, and countless memories, we are looking toward the future with care and intention — for our family, the Twins organization, and this community we love so much,” he said.

Curious if there's going to me more sellers of those that Bally screwed over.

New ownership could be a shot in the arm of the team. The Pohlads will make a bunch of money on the sale and potentially someone richer that wants to compete for a title comes in and throws some money around with willingness to go negative on the income statement for a bit.

There's a lot to like for a future owner. Beautiful stadium and a fanbase that is dedicated to the team. Put together a winner and the tickets will sell.

CSB time, we were just at Target Field last night as my daughter competed in their Champions Day. To qualify you had to participate in a Twins baseball or softball summer camp, where they run a skills showcase testing their abilities, and have one of the top 10 showcase scores throughout the summer. Out of 1500 kids that participated in the summer camps, only 80 get invited to Champions Day. She qualified 8th in her age group and in last night's re-test moved up to 3rd place where she got a plaque and will be recognized with the other place winners at a Twins game next season. Cool experience to see your 9 year old out playing on a big league field under the lights.

Makes more sense now why they slashed payroll in the offseason and did nothing at the deadline. Fortunately there's no chance of the new owners moving the team which was always a threat in the HHH days. Hopefully they get an owner(s) who are willing to spend and be competitive. It's a great ballpark, great market, and great fanbase.

Maybe A-Rod will be tired of fighting over the Timberwolves with Taylor and look across the street.

Fun fact: Trump was the top bid to buy the team back in 1984 but the Pohlads won out.

I expect Twins fans to be celebrating in the streets if/when they sell!

Fans have been going after ownership HARD ever since they announced they were "right sizing" payroll last summer.

Way to capitalize on winning your first playoff GAME in years... Lower payroll 😂

This is great news for Twins fans as long as the Twins stay in Mpls.
Pohlads penny pinched their way for the last 30 years. Had they opened up their pocket book a centimeter the Twins would have made or won the World Series a couple times.

Either they didn't care about winning or thought it wasn't worth going after talent where they couldn't gain financially from it.

There's 15 years left on the Target Field lease and the MBA has continuously invested in the park and fulfilled the team's requests even though it's less than 15 years old. There's no chance they leave. Fans just have a lot of PTSD from the Metrodome/contraction days, McCombs talking about moving the Vikings to San Antonio, The Wolves routinely seen as relocation candidates if/when Taylor sells, and the fact that the Stars did leave (Norm Green sucks).

If there was a good place for an MLB to move to Oakland and Tampa wouldn’t be in their situations.

Vegas is a mess

Minneapolis’s is a solid baseball town and Poland has given them a competitive product. Is Pohlad perfect? Probably not….but he has proven himself a capable and progressive owner. He has won a World Championship…and they have a better facility now than what they has a few years ago. And currently, the tram is MLB competitive.

Carl Pohlad died 15 years ago, so I'm not sure WTF you're talking about. Or are you trying to defend his kids?

I will never forget Carl Pohlad trying to contract the Twins.
This. Carl owned the team for two championships. The Twins did some great things in Carl's hey day, for sure. But the stretch between 1993-2000 was really bad and the 2002 team basically thwarted contraction.

The Pohkad family…the kids have done a decent job of ownership…but owning a baseball team isn’t for everyone. And it’s probably best handled by an interested single owner. If nothing else… the kids have decided to walk away….haters should appreciate that.

They really haven’t done a decent job. The family isn’t at each other’s throats, which is good, but they slashed payroll by $30MM from ‘23 to ‘24 after finally winning a playoff series. They will get their cash payout and hopefully fans will inherit ownership focused on winning with a top-3 farm system in the MLB.

Understand but smaller franchises have unique problems others don’t have… especially in transition” and occasionally “cash flow” becomes an overriding issue/concern after a major event such as a death or transfer of ownership…. Maybe that is at least a partial excuse?
