From Iowa.

Really good ump - one of the highest yearly ratings if you believe the umpire stats.

Shared a betting account with a poker player. WTF?

I want to share a gambling account with one of the rich folks here

A “really good umpire” who is obviously a really dumb sumbitch!
Maybe those baseball managers and players are right and umpires can’t see….those signs about “no gambling” are everywhere there is player access at every ball park….major or minor league!

Why would a person at the top of their profession (with a bright future) piss it away by doing something so phuquin’ stupid?
Why take a chance and allow your name to become associated with anything “verboten” like gambling is with baseball?

Jeeeeebus Christmas….. human beings are soooo stupid!
He can probably work some games for Urbandale Little League as a sub the Spring. Maybe he can catch on full-time in Johnston or West Des Moines…they aren’t as ethically pure as Urbandale. ;)

I’ve never understood the “no pepper” signs at ballparks. Pepper is meant to be played at the ballpark.

Didn’t he score a “perfect score” working home plate a couple of years ago in the World Series? 1st ump to ever do so….

I'd like to think paying them more would decrease this type of activity.....but for some people it is not about want/needing more money.....just the thrill of betting. I don't know what his purpose was.

I didn't read the article, how did they find this out? Was he betting on his own games?

I would imagine that MLB Security is checking up on players and umpires 365 days a year.
Baseball really fears the taint of gambling. Moreso than steroids.

Which quite frankly is a bit of bullshit. They have never cared about the integrity of the game. They knew about the 'roids going on after the baseball shutdown in the 90's

That was”owner driven”….(Fannie’s in the seats) for the most part. Those who run the game on a daily basis, have the game’s best interests a heart. Gambling is a “no-no” and always will be. Players, managers and umpires know this better than any one.

It's a good read. A bit weird. No evidence that he bet on baseball.

But baseball turned their eyes elsewhere. We all know it.

Don’t have to”bet” to violate MLBs “gambling rules”……”association with gamblers’ is against the rules….and obviously, his name was being used with gamblers in some sort of activity/association. Methinks the ump knows so and fessed up….hence he will be allowed to “reapply” next season….If Pete Rose would have fessed up when he was caught, he would be in the HofF now….Guarantee you Northerm, MLB has all the evidence they need…..

Joel,

I'm not questioning the decision by the MLB. I'm simply saying that the details of this story are weird.

How so? He allowed his name to be associated with an gambler…and that’s a no-no. I gotta think they had him dead-to-rights and are doing him a favor to reapply in a year. I didn’t read the story here but from a different printed source. Also heard a brief oral report on the story.
Urbandale area has had 2-3 residents work as MLB umpires the past couple of decades. (Dekinger, the tall guy who threw Brett out of the game for pine tar, this guy and another from Altoona,) I’m bad at names.
