Gophers football: Starting DTs to miss Iowa game

The Gophers will play without their two starting defensive tackles for a second consecutive game Saturday night against No. 5 Iowa.

Steven Richardson (calf) and Scott Ekpe (unknown injury) were listed as out, according to Thursday night's depth chart.

Wide receiver Eric Carter (concussion) was listed as probable. Like Richardson and Ekpe, Carter missed last week's 28-14 loss to No. 3 Ohio State.

Running backs Rodney Smith (ankle) and Shannon Brooks (shoulder/neck), who were hurt against the Buckeyes, were not on the injury report and were listed as co-starters.

Blythe is licking his chops to go against 2s and 3s the whole game. This bodes well for Iowa's run game. And if their RBs come into the game banged up it wouldn't surprise me if they didn't finish the game.

I feel a solid dose of running in between the tackles coming and some good time for CJ to throw on play action.....

They were out last game also, and Minnesota was in the game up to the end at Ohio State. This is nothing new for them this year.

Correct. I hope the Hawks aren't expecting things to be any easier. They will still get Minnesota's best shot despite where they were on the depth chart earlier in the year.

That said, the Hawks have earned the right to come out confident and push around whoever lines up in front of them.

I think our guards have improved the most since last year. Very impressive watching that line block for our backs.

Exactly the right balanced perspective on this. We should be confident, but not OVER-confident, in every game we play. Yet we can take nothing for granted, nor take with anything more than a grain of salt the injury report from the other side.

Think back just one month ago. Do you suppose Northwestern's Defensive Line was "licking its chops" at the prospect of facing Iowa's spit and bailing wire OL? And then they were likely frothing at the mouth even more after our Offensive Player of the Week running back went down early in the game.

We all saw how well that worked out for them.

I HAVE heard though from a friend of mine close to the Minnesota program that Minnesota intends to NOT give us their best shot. From what I understand it will be about a half shot to three quarters shot. So then there's that..........

Why in the world would they do that?

I would be cautious in future dealings with this "friend."

Lol. I get a kick when people say we are going to get everyone's best shot. When would you go into any big ten game and NOT assume the other team is not going to attempt to play their best. Just cracks me up.

All but one of their losses are to quality teams, if one can exclude Nebraska. Now, Nebraska and NW, they got kicked around pretty good...but they seem to have responded quite well - it just doesn't show up in the win column.

The fight they have, missing what seems to be half the starters - is quite remarkable. Kudos to their staff for holding them all together like they have.

If Iowa comes out focused and with energy, they should win. But it's going to be a brawl getting there.

I have no doubt Minnesota will come out jacked up. If we can get up by 10+ early that should take the air out of their sails.

I hope Kirk tells the guys to watch out for an onside kick to start the game (assuming we receive as usual). Or an onside kick at any time for that matter...and a fake punt. I have a feeling Minnesota is going to throw everything they have at the Hawks tomorrow.

My friend, you must label something as sarcastic if you intend it to be sarcastic.

Besides, my sources tell me that it will be a 78% - 83% shot, unless Iowa is really fired up in which case they are just going to mail it in.

Call me crazy but I honestly think we are better than OSU.....obviously biased but the best team they have played thus far is probably PSU, VT, NIU, or maybe Minnesota....and they have squeaked by almost everybody. I think Iowa wins this game by 20+ points...
