moss..

He tweeted a week or so ago he will be in Iowa City on August 16.

Thanks jedn, great news, sounds as though he has his academics straightened out. Been a little worried ever since I heard there may be an issue.

As of now, he really is the mystery man of this recruiting class. I've heard Hutton refer to him as "a beast," so given Brandon's demeanor, that has to be worth something.

Very encouraging words from hutton for sure. Kids, this is going to be a very interesting year to say the least.

The actual quote from Hutton about Moss was that he is " a freak...a freak of nature..." who is going to "bring a lot of athleticism" to the team. Nice words from a teammate who is also pretty athletic!

Awesome, to anyone that has seen him play could there be any comparisons to Ray Thompson be made?

As I understand it Moss was way behind just a year ago. It was one reason schools didn't offer after he blew up in AAU ball. However, he's worked extremely hard to get caught up.

I like that angle. It is one thing to be behind on core classes, it is another thing to be struggling with school.

Sounds like Moss has put it together for now. He will have to spend his freshman year focusing on academics and his game. Unfortunately there will not be a lot of time to do the "student life" type of things(at least at first). As time is quite limited, being a student-athlete anyhow. THEN the season kicks in...He will learn to have to budget his time well, as most do.

Will be stoked to see him on campus!! August 16th will be a good day...

Maybe it's just my hope, but I swear I remember reading the academic issues were not necessarily a reflection of him being a poor student, but more the fact that he transferred schools and things didn't line up correctly. Either way, I'm sure he'll have plenty of support from tutors, advisors and teammates once on campus. Would have been nice to get a class or two out of the way this summer, but I think he'll be fine once he's here.

He struggled to be eligible early in his career at Lincoln Way East and wasn't going to be eligible due to grades when he transferred to Simeon. It's no surprise that the transfer cleared up all academic hurdles. Chicago PS isn't quite an academic powerhouse. Because of this, I won't be getting too excited about Moss being on the team until he is actually living in Iowa City and enrolled in classes. Hopefully he gets things straightened out though. He could be a tremendous addition

You saw the same thing I did then. It's been from awhile back, but I remember the transfer to Simeon being mentioned. Thank you.

It was reported that Moss will now be on campus on the Aug 19th. Like the rest of y'all, I can't wait to see that he is actually on campus and in school.

He wouldn't be scheduled to come on campus this month if he hadn't passed the clearing house, right?

I was of the understanding that you cannot sign a LOI without passing the clearing house. Or is that not what an above poster was referring to?

Yeah, hopefully the kid does well. I just know UI isn't like some others schools, we actually make our athletes be students first, with no breaks. No African American studies courses. If he did have a problem with academics in the Chicago system, he is REALLY going to struggle here. He does have great people around him, which helps. Still, have seen this before, students who struggle with academics in HS don't tend to make it at the UI. The Woody's, and Gesell's of this world, do.

Hoping for the best though, the kid does have a particular set of skills.

I've read some interviews with him where he acknowledged not taking school very seriously early on and not being the most mature kid. Transferring from Lincoln-Way East in Frankfort between his sophomore and junior years to Simeon in the Public League put him a bit behind in a couple of aspects.

As a soph at Lincoln-Way Moss was the go-to guy, but at Simeon he was just a role player as a junior; hard for a lot of kids to handle. I think he's serious about his academics now. It sounds like he's got a couple of good parents who've helped him keep his head straight.

Hopefully he s mature and patient, and consider, if necessary, that a redshirt year may be in his best interest.

True a red shirt year might definitely be good for moss, may be difficult selling him on it though, or the fans for that matter.
I think a RS would be a great move. We have plenty of depth this year and that extra time can really help him set a firm academic foundation. Plus, he was a late bloomer physically as well, more time is always good.

Imagine if marble could have had a RS year?

I'm sorry to burst your bubble here, but Iowa most definitely does have African American studies courses. They're not necessarily joke courses, but I don't know why you would throw out such a false statement.

And we most definitely let our athletes have breaks as students.

Lol, I was kinda thinking the same thing but wasn't gonna say anything.

I remember Ray Thompson and the promise he showed on the team, then boom, he was gone. Fran is a family man so I hope he keeps tabs on him like he would on one of his own.

Scratch the African Studies class then, replace it with advanced Basket Weaving. Although, that could be more difficult than it sounds as well.

Isaiah does have a great family support system. He is a determined, hard-working young man who will do well at Iowa, both in basketball and academics.

Ray Thompson.....could have been.....one of the greatest Hawkeyes of all.....ALL.....time. He didn't show promise. He showed he belonged from the very beginning. It makes my blood boil a little to have to remember this. Hunter Rawlings. Need I say more?

We also had three "leisure studies" majors and one "sports studies" major on our basketball team last year. No African American studies, but maybe it's because 3 of the 4 players are white.

Let's not kid ourselves about academics and our favorite university- or any major college sports program for that matter, if a kid is willing to put in a reasonable amount of effort there are plenty of support systems built in for athletes to ensure they won't fail. If they don't want to put in much effort but are smart enough to figure out the minimum they can get by with they can probably stay on the team as well. I love college sports and the Hawkeyes but I am not naive enough to think we are really above most other power 5 schools. The fact that Moss had to stay this summer to clear up academic issues gave me much more reason to worry than once he gets to iowa city ... As long as he makes it to campus I have no doubts he will be fine academically .

Agree a 100% with this assessment, Ray would have went down as one of all time greats. What exactly was the situation with Hunter Rawlings? I seem to have forgotten the details.

Thanks gdoggy, wow 25 years ago, my how time is flying by. The article seems to confirm that maybe Ray didn't really give a crap or was lacking a little up stairs, or both.

Whatever happened after he left IA, any present update on him? Hope he has a productive life after basketball.
