moss..

Seemed like him and garner transfered to the same team, oral Roberts is coming to mind but I may be wrong. After that I have no idea.

Ray Thompson.....could have been.....one of the greatest Hawkeyes of all.....ALL.....time. He didn't show promise. He showed he belonged from the very beginning. It makes my blood boil a little to have to remember this. Hunter Rawlings. Need I say more?
Hunter had him arrested downtown?

speaking of possibly greatest Hawkeye of all time that didn't play - don't forget about Connie Hawkins. He got shafted. Somebody claimed he could palm two basketballs at the same time, which I seriously doubt.

Saw the Hawk playing JV. An absolutely incredible athlete/player. The Hawks had a very good team that year until 4 starters flunked out at semester ( Nelson was the only one that didn't flunk out). They still ended up with a pretty good season. Nelson and Hawkins would have been incredible to watch together......but alas, it wasn't meant to be.

It wasn't palm two balls at the same time in one hand. The Hawk would palm one ball in each hand, launch around the FT line and then dunk them both on the same jump. No one ever was known to do it before. Even Wilt said it didn't occur to him and he gave Connie Hawkins credit for the idea.

I saw him do it when he was pretty old for an NBA guy in warm ups or maybe at the old halftime HORSE tournament. Now that was fun.

Are you cereal? I honestly have no idea but he was nowhere near the Hawk's level. Nowhere.
Trey was an absolute legend in Mississippi high school basketball. Automatic from 25 feet. Could handle the ball like it was attached to his hand. Hops like he was jumping off a trampoline. I'd say he compared pretty favorably to a combination of 'Pistol' Pete Maravich and David Thompson.

You are kidding, right? I mean we had our share of one year guys back in the 1980's and 90's, but it wasn't like they left for the pros.

Curtis Cuthpert, Brian Boyle, Jeff Walker, Trey Bullet, Johnny Fort, Ray Thompson, shoot, I know there are more but this is getting to be 25-30 years ago. I don't remember Trey Bullett being considered much more than a cool name.

From what i understood, and i may be dense, Thompson was eligible under Big Ten standards. Iowa had their own elevated standards, thanks to Mr Ivy League Wannabe. And please, name me a player who hasn't been drunk and disorderly downtown. Name me a priest that hasn't. Or a Hawkeye announcer, for that matter.

I also remember reading an article years ago where Ray talked about how he had gotten his stuff together at Oral Roberts. Don't know if it stuck or not.

Yep I recall that now that "mr ivy league wannabe" lol wanted iowa to have tougher academic standards than the rest of the big ten and the uproar it was causing.(as u can c I probably would not have gotten in) That definitely was not a good thing for iowa athletes.

How bout marcelus (sp) Summerville

I'm sorry to burst your bubble here, but Iowa most definitely does have African American studies courses. They're not necessarily joke courses, but I don't know why you would throw out such a false statement.

And we most definitely let our athletes have breaks as students.

Honestly, Iowa lets its student-students have breaks. There are some easier degrees there which allow a fair amount of leeway in choosing courses.

I believe with Summerville and leaving the program was more due to A disliking of Alford amongst other things. Had a friend who worked with ball team and nothing indicating grades. He was a RS his freshman year in same class as Pierre pierce. Would have been ideal if he stuck around and been a senior with Brunner and Horner's class.

I'd put Joey Range up against any of those guys.

Yeah, I saw him shoot....didn't live up to his name. More a Stray Bullett.

Jeff Walker, now that was a huge loss for Dr. Tom. That kid could shoot the rock and jump out of the gym.

Letting athletes have a easier path thru college is a very slippery slope. IMHO, they need to work and major in a true major just like everyone else. The NBA is a pipe dream for 99% of these guys. I hope the coaching staff RS's Moss if he needs it and doesn't if he shows he can handle college and can help us win this year.

A few years back I visited a Juco with a family who happened to have a child nearing college age. I was just curious. I'm not a big Juco fan.

But what I saw while there were academic assistant programs for all students where one could get help with research, even writing a paper. Any day, every day. It would take a vegetable or complete lack of effort to fail.

I presume it is the same for athletes at Universities. Between tutors and whatever else is offered, only a true determination to fail could possibly get the job done. And I don't think that is a bad thing if one is learning during the process.

Leisure Studies? Look it up, it isn't necessarily a bad major. What? You expect everyone to be a Surgeon?

Now one the other hand paperless classrooms where students get grades based on their need to remain eligible? (UNC) That's cheating.

That is not, in any way, different from every other college or university in the world.
I'm not saying it is. I'm just saying that, with the academic help available to student athletes (especially with scheduling), anyone who qualifies for admission can probably succeed at Iowa. I think Fran and his staff have done a good job making that a priority and his players usually become tight-knit and they support each other.

I think you are right. Go to class. Do your assignments, etc. Most classes that should get you at least a C. It's a little sad that grade inflation has come this far but it is the reality.

Jeff walker never played the way I remember it.

one of my good friends was buddies with Walker so I played with him several times his first year. his J was a little funky but he was incredible. as good of an athlete as I've seen on the Iowa roster including Davis. just not as tall.

Thanks BB, seems like we have our share of bad luck with guys oozing with potential, what's up with that

We probably crossed paths at the fieldhouse back then?
