Most exciting Iowa coaching hire since … ?

Alford by far. That was right around the time when I found this Rivals forum while attending Iowa. The Worley, Boyd, Reiner, Sonderleiter, Courtney Scott recruiting timeframe that had everyone excited. Then getting Recker and Hogan as D1 top transfers the following year. Expectations were high, seems like yesterday.
Same for me, didn't the 2001 team play the Globe Trotters in the preseason exhibition game and lost it in the last few minutes, was in the hospital getting my left hip replaced, terrible TV reception.....

I was on Midway Island in the Navy during the 69/70 season and missed that special team with Ralph Miller as coach.

Yeah I remember that. Iirc that was the Recker and Evans senior year team.

It was, lost by three points when Hogan missed a three at the end I think. Oliver Miller's passing recently brought back memories of that game since he and Chris Morris had just recently finished in the NBA but played that game for the Globetrotters.

Whatever happened to Courtney Scott (as in why did he leave)?

Didn't seem like he stuck around more than a year or two at most.

I remember Scott bringing lots of energy his freshman year and being a fan favorite, then was redshirting his sophomore year. IIRC he and Evans supposedly got into it at practice when Scott got elbowed in the face and lost some teeth. He transferred to Oakland the next season and had a really good three year career there with an NCAA tourney appearance.

Yeah, CScott was not happy with Alford letting his stars get away with whatever they wanted in relation to the abuse they dished out in practice. I don’t think he liked being redshirted either. Heck of an athlete for his size.

Are we still loving the Pochettino hire at the moment though?

I'm at the point where it's on the players. I loved his quote about how you don’t just put on the crest and call it good. It means you give everything you have for the country.

We don't have enough of those guys. Can't get hurt for their club teams...

Until they sort that out I'm pretty sure wr would lose to Canada, Mexico and Panama with Jesus as our coach.

I hate to admit it in hindsight, but EVERYONE was excited when Boy Wonder was hired. Then he beat the defending champs in his first game and then brought in a helluva first recruiting class and it was go time. Unfortunately, he couldn’t coach himself out of a wet paper bag (still can’t).

Folks were excited about Lick right up until his presser. That was the worst presser for a major college coach hire I’ve ever seen. Everything was downhill after that.

Apologies if this has been discussed earlier, but I’ve been driving all day, and am just now catching up on threads and getting a chance to post.

I feel like the McCollum hiring is one of the most exciting Iowa coaching hires that I can remember. I can’t think of many other times when we’ve had a top candidate who was identified by the fan base, who was also coveted by other teams, who we actually ended up landing.

When McCaffery and Lickliter were hired, I think there was generally a positive and optimistic response among fans, but neither had been widely discussed before we learned they were taking the Iowa job. The same is true for George Raveling and Tom Davis back in the 80s, although that was prior to the Internet. The Jan Jenson hire happened so fast there wasn’t time for fans to discuss it. And while it turned out OK, the Kirk Ferentz hire was a massive disappointment at the time, having missed on Bob Stoops.

It seems like Hawkeye fan history has been marked by numerous highly sought coaches who never ended up at Iowa for one reason or another. The aforementioned Stoops is the most obvious example. Bruce Pearl is another. To a lesser degree, you might add Dana Altman to this list … he was there for the taking in 2007, but we went with Lick, and Altman eventually ended having strong success at Oregon.

But this time, we didn’t miss. We got the guy we wanted. You’ve got to be excited about the future of the MBB program.

The only other hire that I think had a similar level of excitement was when we got Steve Alford in 1999. Of course, that ended up not working out so well, but at the time, that hire produced intense excitement. Alford was coming off a successful run at SW Mo St, and was widely considered a rising star in the coaching ranks. In fact, when his name came up for the Iowa job, many dismissed the possibility, assuming Alford would hold out for the Indiana job, which was expected to be open soon with Bobby Knight nearing retirement age.

While I think the initial excitement level is similar for both Alford and McCollum, my confidence is high that McCollum will deliver the results to back up the hype. Unlike Alford, McCollum is a great fit, who understands what it means to be a Hawkeye, and wants to be here. He’s a great coach, AND he’s one of us.

In the coming weeks, some of the national pundits will no doubt give “grades” to the various coaching hires across the country. I can’t believe that any school deserves a better grade than Iowa and McCollum.
A different time but when Ralph Miller was hired by UIowa, college basketball folks KNEW UIowa basketball was to he taken seriously as a NCAA tournament contender every year. Ralph was one of the Top 10 basketball coaches in the nation during his Wichita State run. Iowa/Evy were to be taken seriously. That was 60+ years ago…

The Miller team was definitely exciting and playing in the old Fieldhouse things got to rocking.
