Two 9-0 starts - only time in IA history! Four Top 10 finishes - hopefully a 5th this year! And some of you wanted him gone - read Pat Angers tweet - says it all!

Yep, this new guy posing as Ferentz can stay a while. I really think he has let the assistance have more power this year and has listened to what they wanna do. Much needed change - should have happened years ago

I actually think it's the exact opposite. He was letting the assistants do too much the last few years and he took more direct control of what was happening this year. I also think it is a combination of a lot of things and you can't just point to one change and say that is why they are so much better this year.

Funny thing is that not much has really changed IMO, same offense, same defense, a few tweaks on special teams, change in practice time, and a new facility. I think the biggest factor is the fact that KF had to spend soooooo much time getting things going with this new facility that he really was spread to thin. Obviously the time he had to spend on that project will be much more beneficial than a few "down" years. Not to mention it was almost a complete staff overhaul and the fact that people really over exaggerated with how poorly we played last year. I mean we were this years special teams away from winning at least 9 games last year, people quickly forget about that I think. Yeah we squeaked by a few sub par teams and the Minny & Tenn game were not very good, but last year we were a punt away from beating Nebby, 1 stop from beaingt Wisconsin, ISU game should have won (lost by 3), and Maryland game by 1 special teams play....that is four games we win this year simply due to special teams play.....now the few tweaks and changes we have seen addresses the problems that killed us last year (including making tough decision on QB)

This makes sense. And earlier this year Kirk was open about sending a lot of time the last few yeas fund raising for the new facilities. Hell of a group of players too.

Most of those on this board that just want to bitch haven't slowed down enough to figure out that 'New Kirk" is really just Old Kirk......
Even Kirk said "It's a new me."

Maybe you should convince Kirk he just the same old same old guy.

The caustic interviews, bs answers, playing his pet favorites, yep same old Kirk.

Maybe the best QB in his tenure at Iowa has something to do with it all.

Coaches take too much heat when they lose and get too much credit when they win. He's a very good coach; always has been

no doubt about this team is much more vintage kirk than new kirk
Yeah, because Old Kirk used to routinely call time outs when the other team had the ball deep in their own territory, with a minute or so left in the half. Wait a minute, he didn't do that, and if he did, he was hoping for a miracle block, because he sure as hell wasn't going to allow his Offense to attempt to move the ball anywhere but up the gut and pray they broke one, which of course never happened. Then it was Knee City, regardless of field position.

This year he's called time outs while on Defense with teams backs to the wall, and let C.J. attempt to score with little time left. He has done that several times this year. Seemingly ever game, and it's worked extremely well. He's also (in conjunction with a heads-up C.J Beathard) managed the clock beautifully this year. For certain that is new, or news, take your pick.

Yes, Iowa's M.O. is still the same. Play great Defense if you can, run the ball, and play some good to great Special Teams. Iowa's players have been able to do that, and have been aided by a less conservative Kirk Ferentz. Old Kirk reared his ugly head a bit at the end of the Indiana game however, and we were a fortunate bounce off of Hillyer away from seeing Indiana's Offense back on the field with a chance to tie the game, a game in which they had no business of being in a position to tie late. Not like that approach has ever bitten us in the ass...............

wrong- kirk was going for it on 4th down last year and taking as many chances as this year. kirk coaches to his personel. when he has confidence in his players he takes more chances. his confidence in beathard has grown enormously.

I would agree he has always been a good coach in certain aspects, but poor to middling in others.

It was/is not an accident that a comprehensive study found KF was *the* worst active FBS coach in games decided by <7 points. Something like 0.32 win percentage. Also has lost more games as a double digit favorite more than every other Big Ten team combined over the period of study(like a 10 year span)

That suggests strongly that, per the cold hard statistics, his overly conservative nature adversely affected his coaching decisions and Iowa lost games time and time again by his poor clock management and late game coaching decisions.

but hey, believe what you will.

I'm glad he has changed, look at the results so far. The fun ride this season isn't over yet either.

Old Kirk would say Freddie Russell, Albert young, shonn Greene, etc... What I am saying the last few years are an exception not the norm....we still get you don't like KF, I understood that a while ago

Freddie Russell was a FB? what point are you trying to make here?

This year's offense is nothing like last years offense. Where is the running on 3rd and 11? The 2 yard flat routes on 3rd and 5? The featuring a FB in the backfield?

To suggest it is the same offense is laughable and shows your bias or ignorance. I dont think you are ignorant.

Sometimes the kids just need to get older, stronger, Do these LB's look like last year? No . They learned and got stronger and hungry.

Show me one time where I said Kirk is going for it more or less on 4th down? That has absolutely nothing to do with what I said. Zero. Yeah, Kirk goes for it on 4th down sometimes, lots of Coaches do, as they should. I explained to you some of the glaring differences. If you don't understand that, there is nothing I can do for you.

Do you know what else he's doing that is different? Playing his best QB. (and playing a Running Back at the Running Back position)

Why take a shot at Weisman? Didn't he give us everything he had when we gave him the ball? Isn't that enough?

5-6 carries a game and the rest go to an actual running back. There was nothinf wrong with the OL last year. The holes were there. Weisman could not run fast enough to get there and through them. It's not his fault. He did what he was asked to do but never should have been a feature back for crissakes!

if you can stomach it, watch the last drive of the Minnesota/Iowa game last year on my post.

Wadley gains about 50 yards on 5 carries(ended up with 9 carries for 68 yards, 7.6 average) and CJ throws 2 TD's on the last two plays of the game and one is ruled incomplete because McCarron didnt hang on and let the DB strip it. What does CJ do? Throws another TD pass despite a rush that he dodged and throws a perfect ball.

I like Kirk as a person but he promoted/played the wrong guys last year and the program paid the price.

Most had it wrong, give me a break. The "I told you so troll" trying to rile people up.

The fans didn't re-evaluate themselves....Kirk Ferentz did. I can proudly say I was becoming a skeptic of the coaching staff and I have no regrets for voicing my criticism. They deserved it.

I am evaluated on every job I complete....and it's not my job to evaluate myself.

In certain ways you can though.

What? Being 9-0 is so horrible.

KF was listless...by his own admission...he kicked himself in the rear and changed...good for him.

That fans complained about his coaching, demeanor, and the product on the field makes sense...the ship was sinking...

Iowa has a QB now...that the players like...he seems to be the real deal...big difference...he can make plays and lift all the players to a higher level. Elite...

And...Iowa has had an easy schedule this year...a great time to "get better"...

A shot? That wasn't really my intention but if you think that was "a shot" then so be it. Look I know he gave it his all when he was here, most guys do. I was simply giving a reason for why we are better this year. Maybe I didn't pick up on your sarcasm.

Criticism on Kirk the last 2 years was absolutely justified...just ask him. I was leaning toward going a new direction and not ashamed to admit. I am glad we've seen a new vibe in the program and happy he is still here.

Nice job starting the post about Angerers tweet. Would be even nicer if you shared the tweet.

If you'd have said "trying to use a FB as a RB", it would have still made your point, and would not have been so likely to ruffle feathers.
